Conduct Literature for Women I, 1500
6 Volume Set Series Editors: William St Clair and Irmgard Maassen The highly successful first set in the Conduct Literature series draws upon the guidance literature for women produced during the beginning of the early modern period. Within the texts can be found advice on conduct in almost every aspect of female life. The Puritan ideals of virtue and piety underpin these writings, which describe feminine models of chastity, modesty and submission and emphasise the sense of religious and domestic duty which lay behind the broader social expectations of women.

Postgraduate Courses - Modules
Organiser: Dr Jo Catling
This module aims to explore the emergence of a distinct "women's voice" in European literature, particularly of France, Britain and the German-speaking and Scandinavian countries. The focus is primarily on twentieth-century writing. Women writers are considered within national and historical contexts, but discussion will take into account similarities in form, style and focus which transcend national boundaries. Within the context of a broadly chronological approach, an implicit understanding of feminist literary theories will provide a background to an exploration of individual writers and genres. Texts studied will include a number of the following (all texts will be available in English, although that should not be a barrier to reading them in the original wherever possible!):
Primary Reading
English:
  • Virginia Woolf

GOALS OF THE COURSE:
During the semester, we will closely examine several significant texts written by women over the last two centuries in an attempt to identify what might constitute "women's literature." We will employ several different critical approaches to the texts including close reading, cultural and historical approaches, and feminist interpretations. These various approaches, along with your writing assignments, should contribute to your analytical and writing skills as well as your general knowledge and interpretation of "Women's Literature." CLASSROOM POLICIES: NO BASHING: (female-, male-, gay-, straight-, Asian-, Latino-, Black-, White- etc.) I demand absolute respect from and for everyone in the classroom. You must learn to argue your point of view without personally insulting those with whom you disagree, and you must treat the person whose views you find objectionable with the same courtesy that you expect and deserve. NO PLAGIARISM: Your writing and your work must be your own. If you use other people's ideas, credit them in a footnote; if you use their words, put them in quotes and cite your source. Plagiarism constitutes grounds for failing the course and may lead to broader disciplinary action by the University.

79. Lieberman And Dooling
itself is perhaps the best general assessment to date of the place of women writersin the early 20th century, the heyday of modern Chinese literature.

Lieberman, Sally Taylor. The Mother and Narrative Politics in Modern China Charlottesville University of Virginia Press Dooling , Amy D., and Kristina M. Torgeson eds Writing Women in Modern China An Anthology of Women's Literature from the Early Twentieth Century New York Columbia University Press, 1998. The question (or "problem") of woman has lurked near the core of modern Chinese literature at its genesis and through its subsequent defining moments. In the early years of political reform and the emergence of the "New Culture" at the turn of the century and the ensuing decade, images of women became a central trope in literary and nonliterary writings (principally by men) used to dramatize either cultural backwardness, cultural change, or both. It has frequently been the literary woman's body on which the backwardness and inhumanity of the Chinese tradition were observed (bound feet, confinement to the inner chambers of the house, arranged marriage, superstitious and often harmful management of women's health), and on which significant cultural advances were marked (the liberation of bound feet, cross-dressing, short haircuts in later years, etc.). Attention began to be paid to the plight of women precisely at the time when the vernacular language (as opposed to the archaic, classical idiom) was first being promoted as the medium of education and culture.
