    Conduct Literature for Women II
6 Volume Set Series Editors: William St Clair and Irmgard Maassen Spanning the years from c.1640 to 1710, a period of political, social and religious turmoil and reconstitution, Conduct Literature for Women II bridges the transition from a paradigm of virtuous conduct that was based on biblical precept and embedded in a universal hierarchy of reciprocal duties, to the sentimental view of femininity that came to dominate in the 18th century. Whereas Puritans attempted to uphold the pious virtues of the godly household, others turned to French models of polite manners that were becoming ever more central in defining subtle distinctions of gentility. Conduct texts began to rely for their legitimation more on reasoned argument, while the traditional demands for female obedience were transformed into less direct and more elegant instructions to internalise a well-bred self-restraint. Although old misogynist stereotypes survived and continued to inform popular pamphlet literature, and chastity, modesty and submission remained at the core of even the more worldly conduct advice, the underlying rationale was shifting from strictures on duty to appeals to a sense of honour and decorum.

Women´s writing loses its pejorative sound An interview with Cuban writer Marilyn Bobes By Ana Maria Ruiz Cubanow.- Although women's writing continues to be marginalized, over the last 10 years Cuban literature has been experiencing a sort of subversion, originating in the eruption of female voices that have been provoking subtle changes in the traditional patriarchal canon that dominates this source of artistic creation. This phenomenon, whose most innovative and controversial exponents can be found in the narrative writing genre, is characterized by an increased presence of female writers, distinct focuses and new attitudes expressed by some writers, who have taken up issues normally classified as "feminine."

Executive Summary This paper presents a broad overview and synthesis of the recent research literature on the major psycho social influences on womens health. In the first section, the variability of health among women is reviewed, with a particular emphasis on diversities in health according to womens major social roles of partner, parent and worker. The context within which social roles are carried out, particularly the socio-economic context, is identified as a critical factor. While research examining womens health within the context of both social roles and material circumstances have produced quite complex findings, the research reviewed in this paper clearly suggests that to appropriately document and understand the variability of health among women, attention to the particular circumstances of womens lives is required. This point is further highlighted in sections describing the health issues of older women, Aboriginal women and immigrant and refugee women.

    Women Studies Minor
Feminism provides the conceptual basis for the Women Studies program minor and Women Studies courses. Feminism is defined as the awareness that women as a group are systematically subordinated; the understanding that the oppression of women is linked to other forms of oppression; and the commitment to work actively to transform gender-based and related hierarchies. Feminism challenges patriarchal viewpoints, theories, categories, understandings, and interpretations, and their resulting power relationships. Feminism appreciates women's empowerment from various locations, and understands the mutual interdependence of women globally.
Minor Requirements The minor includes five core courses and additional electives for a total of 30 credits. Courses not listed as Women Studies courses may be substituted at the discretion of the Director. In order to count towards the minor, a course should focus primarily on women and/or women's experiences and conform to the Women's Studies Mission Statement. Students are expected to earn at least a C+ in courses counting toward the minor. Students may design a student/faculty designed major though the College of Arts and Sciences. Close advisement is recommended, as new courses may apply to this minor.
