Women in Charge
By Mary Bergin
September 20, 2003
reprinted with permission
About 200 women who are high-level executives, about one-third more than expected, were in Madison this week to hear and talk about how their world is changing.
It was the first Women's Executive Leadership Summit at the University of Wisconsin Fluno Center. Participants got "coaching" and were challenged about both achievement and ethics. They taught and learned from each other during lectures and while sharing meals.
One thing no one likely heard was how to work like a man.
That pressure, that mind-set apparently is disappearing as women get more comfortable with the idea that their own, natural way of communicating and problem solving can be both appropriate and effective.
"It's no longer a matter of fitting in" with a male-dominated workplace, says Pat Alea, program manager with Tammy Thayer-Ali. "Women are helping to influence business," and the way business is conducted, instead of being a token presence.
That means more collaboration among colleagues, less hierarchical management. It's seeing the value of having an open door, instead of using "I can't see you now" as a reflex response.
