Greetings... We pray that someday, all governments will be willing to put the Billions of dollars they swiftly have available for war, into food, shelter and education. Only through kindness, gentleness and compassion for others will our world truly become a "Developed" world. We ask our fellow Americans to take the time to talk with people of other faiths and to learn for yourself what they believe. Don't depend on the propaganda machines of the media. [even the internet or printed materials provided to you by faith-based or political organizations] Do something truly Brave; stop and talk to someone who lives perhaps next door or who worships around the corner. Find out if what you have heard through the grapevine or on tv or radio is truly what they are about. Our organization offers English speaking speakers to groups in the region and are more than happy to help facilitate such events for the betterment of us all. God willing. Let us promote the American Dream, not the nightmares of xenophobia. We ask all who read this to speak up against stereotyping of ethnic and religious groups that may, on the surface, appear to be the same as those cowards who committed the crimes againt humanity. Let us remember that several hundred who died on 9-11 where NOT American, but of other nations. It was not an attack on a faith, but an attack on innocence.

Women find place in humor's boys' club
By Burl Burlingame
Star-Bulletin
Women who make fun isn't the same thing as making fun of women. The latter is no joke, pal. But the former opens up a whole new world of humor. The University of Hawaii Summer Session this year has a focus on "The Comic in the Culture," and that includes a look at how women have tickled the national funnybone. Two of the visiting dignitaries are June Foray, a voice-over legend in the animation industry, and Trina Robbins, one of the most respected female cartoonists in America. Both are giving free weekend lectures. You might know Foray best as the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel - she can't travel without "some guy walking up and talking to me in a Bullwinkle voice. I automatically answer in Rocky's voice!" she said from her Los Angeles home. She started in radio drama at age 15 in the '50s, graduating to Capitol comedy albums with the likes of Stan Freberg and Mel Blanc when radio was blindsided by TV. Luckily, the Disney studios discovered her vocal abilities and cast her as the cat in "Cinderella," her first animated role. Foray continued on-camera work - 13 weeks with Johnny Carson, a reoccurring role as "a little Mexican girl on 'Green Acres'" - but eventually decided she'd had it with make-up, wardrobe, hairstylists and the rest of the visual end of show biz. She wanted to do vocal work only. Did that decision pay off?

In addition, the report finds:

  • Only 13 states have specific provisions that allow a woman to quit her job because of sexual or other personal harassment and receive UI benefits. Almost half of all women will suffer sexual harassment at least once in their work life. Of these, nine percent will quit a job to avoid harassment, with as little as 20 percent filing a formal complaint regarding the harassment. Women who leave their jobs under these circumstances should be covered by the UI system.
    States should adopt policies that close the "gender gap" in their UI systems. Because the states operate their own UI systems with little oversight by the federal government, they are also free to address these issues in state legislation. States can provide for general rules that "personal compelling" reasons justify an individual leaving his or her job. Or they can enact general rules relating to domestic circumstances. Finally, they can enact specific statutes that provide that it is "good cause" to leave a job due to child care conflicts, care-giving responsibilities, illness, sexual harassment and domestic violence. These are essential steps towards restoring gender and family balance to the UI system.

A virtual tour of Orchard House, Alcott's childhood home and the place where she is believed to have written Little women.
http://www.louisamayalcott.org/alcottorchard.html
Learn About the Alcotts and Orchard House
Amos Bronson Alcott originally purchased two houses, both dating to the early 1700’s. He moved the smaller tenant house and joined it to the rear of the main structure, making many improvements to the main house, as he explains in his journal entries of 1857-58. At that time, the site encompassed 12 acres of apple orchards, probably appealing to Mr. Alcott who considered apples the most perfect food. It is not surprising that he should name his home "The Orchard House." Orchard House was the Alcott family's most permanent home (from 1858 to 1877). Louisa May Alcott wrote her classic work, Little Women , here in 1868 at a "shelf" desk built by her father especially for her. She also set Little Women in this home, causing guests to comment that "a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book!" There have been no major structural changes to the site since the Alcotts’ time of residence. Approximately 75% of the furnishings were owned by the Alcotts, and the rooms look very much as they did when the family lived there. A tour of Orchard House introduces visitors both to objects which were important to the family and to the family members themselves: Amos Bronson Alcott , a transcendental philosopher and teacher;
