The Internet and the Family: A Study on Israel Abstract With the rapid expansion of computer use and Internet connection, an important question has arisen of how this technology is related to the quantity and quality of time that parents and children spend together. The introduction of computers and Internet connection has the potential to create new conflicts between parents and adolescents. Conflicts over use, over regulations of computer use, over supervision of content of web activity and gaps in mutual expectations have been described in the literature. At the same time, others have argued that the introduction of computers and connection to the Internet creates new opportunities for family dialogue and time together. The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between Internet connection and frequency of adolescents daily use and family time and the perceived quality of relations between adolescents and their parents. Data from the National Youth Survey conducted in Israel by the Minerva Center for Youth Studies were used. The findings show that Internet connection and frequency of Internet use is negatively related to adolescents’ perception of the quality of family relationships. This negative relationship is not explained by a reduction of the time that parents and adolescents share. The findings suggest that adolescents who are frequent users experienced conflicts with their parents and that reduce this reduces the quality of their relationships. Future directions for research are suggested.

Social Studies - Primary Documents Using Primary Source Documents Primary source documents are writings - whether historic or contemporary - that have been produced by first-hand participant/observers. They can be items such as letters, drawings, diaries, reports or memoirs. As students work with these types of documents in the classroom, they develop their interpretative and analytical abilities and become better able to understand the ways in which written history is colored by individual authors' personal and cultural points of view. Further, because these documents are real and personal, they make the study of history more exciting, compelling and human than facts, dates and events packaged in a textbook could ever do. This index of primary source documents contains many examples that may be useful to teachers preparing students to answer the document-based questions on the New York State Social Studies Regents exams. For additional information about how to use primary source documents and other types of primary materials - artifacts, images, artwork, film, and music, for example - the following sites may be helpful:
