126. Beyond Racism And Misogyny: Black Feminism And 2 Live Crew
Examines the debate over 2 Live Crew's arrest on obscenity charges in 1990, and they ways in which the case illustrates how race and gender politics continue to marginalize Black women.

Beyond Racism and Misogyny: Black Feminism and 2 Live Crew
Kimberle Crenshaw

In June 1990, the members of the rap group 2 Live Crew were arrested and charged under a Florida obscenity statute for their performance in an adults-only club in Hollywood, Florida. The arrests came just two days after a federal court judge had ruled that the sexually explicit lyrics in 2 Live Crew's album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be , were obscene. Although the members of 2 Live Crew were eventually acquitted of charges stemming from the live performance, the Federal court determination that As Nasty As They Wanna Be is obscene still stands. This obscenity judgment, along with the arrests and the subsequent trial, prompted an intense public controversy about rap music, a controversy that merged with a broader debate about the representation of sex and violence in popular music, about cultural diversity, and about the meaning of freedom of expression. I
Two positions dominated the debate about 2 Live Crew. Writing in Newsweek , political columnist George Will staked out a case against the Crew, arguing that Nasty was misogynistic filth and characterizing their lyrics as a profoundly repugnant "combination of extreme infantilism and menace" that objectified Black women and represented them as legitimate targets for sexual violence.

(1) Professor Aivazova, Doctor of Political Sciences, examines in historical and international perspective the marginal status of women in Russian state structures and political parties. (a) Historical background It was only after the February revolution of 1917 that women in Russia got the vote and the first woman was appointed as a minister. She was Countess Sofia Panina and headed the ministry of social care. After the October revolution the job went to a woman Bolshevik, Alexandra Kollontai. The tradition of putting a token woman in charge of social policy continues today in the person of deputy premier Valentina Matvienko.

Gender and Women's Studies
Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary transnational course of study designed to help students understand the ways in which sexual politics shapes social experience. We examine the nuanced historical processes through which women and men live out gender; the set of institutional and ideological practices that shape it; and the concrete processes and political movements through which inequities are transformed. Employing a transnational, comparative approach, students explore how gender intersects with issues of nation, culture, religion, sexuality, class, and race. Gender and Women's Studies prepares students to utilize feminist methodologies and approaches to interrogate other disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and arts. from the Commentary dept. I’m an American. I grew up in California, but moved to Canada a number of years ago. I love it hear. I have great health care. None of my neighbors are mourning the loss of a son or daughter in a war thats purpose changes daily and makes no sense. Now I’ve said it before, I’m glad that I’m an American and there are things to be proud of, but the lack of health care, the inane current foreign policy, restrictions and threats of restrictions on a woman’s right to choose, the idea that gays and lesbians can still be deniged the right to see their significant other in the hospital, and other such indignities and injustices visited upon Americans on a daily basis are nothing to aspire to. Stephen Harper, the leader of the Canadian Conservative Party thinks otherwise, and Canada may soon look very much like the fifty-first state.

Fulltext conference paper by Lisa Trevi±o Roy-Davis, entitled Working Race Speech, Silence and women's Work as Racial politics in Denise Ch¡vez and Ana Castillo.

The Modern Language Association Meeting
December 29, 1999
Chicago, IL Working Race: Speech, Silence and Women's Work as Racial Aside from the startling realiszation that stereotypical racialized thinking is alive and well in my newly extended familyI keep returning to this holiday moment as a window into the problem of how racism and sexism are perpetuated in the workplace and on the job. By now, the assumption that we live in a racist society is nearly implicit in academic thought, even taken for granted. We've gotten to this point by a definite increase in racial awarenessmore speech and more rhetoric on the race issue. But we are also subjected to constant reminders from the press about how far we have come. Even mainline publications such as this week's issue of Newsweek declare the war on racism to be largely won. Ellis Cose, writing for the magazine declares: The color line is fraying all around us. The American future certainly will not be circumscribed by one long line with whites on one side and the "darker" races on the other; there will be many lines, and many camps, and few will be totally segregated. Disparities will remain. But with the rudest reminders of racism washed away, it will be a lot easier to tell ourselves that we have finally overcome. (30)

Kim Goforth Welcomes You to her Feminist Law Website "Your Silence Will Not Protect You." Audre Lorde" The purpose of this page is to provide links between different groups of women and men who are interested in women's issues regarding social justice, human rights and the law. I am graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and have been working on issues of violence against women and children, most recently at a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Working within the justice system trying to advocate for abused women and children has been a very frustrating and yet enriching process. Some days I hate my chosen road but most of the time I can walk into my front door with the feeling that I have actually made a difference in someone's life. I know a lot of people who consider law school only to reject the idea because they are women or are progressive and I can't say that it will be a picnic...but I can say that it's certainly worth it to be able to make a real difference. SJFE : Women and Law in Europe
    WOMEN AND POLITICS IN SPAIN
January 1997 (english, french, spanish) Lleida University
The Second Republic (1931-1936) generated important legislative work and women were granted many new rights of which they had been hitherto deprived. The 1931 Constitution granted suffrage to women. Spain was therefore one of the first among South European states to enfranchise women. In 1932, laws on divorce and civil marriage were passed. Women were accorded full legal status ; abortion was legalised, the crime of adultery was abolished and legal measures ensuring women's equal access to the labour market were taken. Franco's dictatorship tolled the knell of all those democratic rights . The Catholic national state which came into power after the defeat of the Republicans was eager to restrict women to the home and confine them to the private sphere. The Catholic Church ethics and its influence upon education and society at large worked with the same objective. One should bear in mind that this social pattern took place against a background of severe repression of all democratic trends. During this period, the law served that purpose. Numerous republican and democratic laws were abolished, like the laws on civil marriage and divorce. Abortion was severely punished. Women's legal ability was greatly restricted, and subjected to the authority of the father or the husband. During the period of transition to democracy (1975-1978), political reforms paved the way for the first democratic elections in June 1977. Women's legal ability was restored and extended : free and equal access to work and the right to hire were recognised to women. This period also saw the revival of women's liberation movements with their specific cultural means of expression (magazines, bookstores, editorials...). The legalisation of political parties and trade unions opened up a controversial debate amongst feminists on the question of whether the women's liberation movement should become involved in the larger democratic strategy of the parties or remain independent.
