Women and the politics of Fundamentalism in Iran
Journal no.6 1995. pp12-15. A response to Haleh Afshar's article in WAF journal no 5
Mandana Hendessi and Rouhi Shafii
FIFTEEN years of Islamic fundamentalist gov-ernment have taken a massive toll on women's politics in Iran. Secularist feminism has been suffocated within Iran's boundaries; its survival should be mainly attributed to the efforts of Iranian women's groups outside Iran. Women in Iran can raise their issues only by using the framework set by the fundamentalists - they can exercise no real con-trol over the agenda. Naturally, given this imposition, those who have some influence are women who are trusted by the regime as 'true believers' of funda-mentalism. Haleh Afshar's position on fundamentalist women should be placed in the context of a deepen-ing identity crisis which many Iranian secularist women living in the West face. It is part of a trend which is developing amongst some academic Iranian feminists in an attempt to respond to this crisis of identity. It was in 1985 in Nairobi, Kenya, in the women's decade conference held by the UN, that the power and appeal of fundamentalist Iranian women really sunk into our minds. it became clearly appar-ent there that larger numbers of Muslim third-world women were considering Islamic fundamentalism as a viable political option to combat western imperial-ism. A cross-section of third-world women, from Bolivia right across the globe to the Philippines, tend-ed to find the 'anti-imperialist' message of fundamen-talism more attractive - more tangible. They also con-sidered the struggle against imperialism as a priority overriding the importance of achieving gender equal-ity. Haleh Afshar is therefore quite right to claim the third-world popularity of the fundamentalist mes-sage.

International Conference on Women and Politics in Asia
Halmstad, Sweden, 6-7 June, 2003 This international conference will focus on women and politics in Asia and will address politics as a gendered domain. Women compose half of the citizens in the Asian countries. Opportunities for women to be represented in political bodies and to influence political matters are an important parameter of democracy and thus an integral aspect of political development and the democratization process in Asia. Increasing the active participation of women in politics and the representation of women in positions of power remains a crucial step towards obtaining a gender balance in politics. At the same time it is important to examine the "gender" of politics and implications of gender in the political life in Asian countries. The aim of the conference is to study different dimensions of Asian women in politics. The conference is multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary in approach and invites contributions from social sciences and humanities from all parts of the world.

Article by Homa Hoodfar from the Global Reproductive Health Forum.

Bargaining with Fundamentalism:
Women and the Politics of Population Control in Iran
Homa Hoodfar
Given that controlling women and their bodies and reclaiming the family as a site of male power and dominance is a common thread found in all brands of fundamentalism, it is not surprising that feminists tend to be keen observers of fundamentalism's spread, their increasing ability to forge alliances with other right-wing forces, and even their ascendance to state power. In this context, the history of gender debates and the process of making and unmaking visions of womanhood carry special significance in the Islamic Republic of Iran, one of the first countries where fundamentalist movements have successfully ascended and monopolised state power in recent times. This is in marked contrast with the earlier position of many political leaders, who viewed politics as a male domain and domesticity and motherhood as the cornerstone of women's lives. Indeed, although Ayatollah Khomeini himself objected strenuously when women were given the right to vote in 1963, the regime declared participation in formal politics a religious duty for all, including women. Nonetheless, during the first decade of its rule, the regime continued to introduce laws and practices justified by their particular version of Islamic legal tradition, which makes the family the absolute kingdom of men, and in which the wife (or wives) and children (especially daughters) become disenfranchised subjects. Thus, to a considerable extent, the Islamic regime in Iran displays the patterns characteristic of fundamentalist world visions: that is, the regime represents the divine power that rules over men, and men in turn rule over the women in their families.

WOMEN AND POLITICS qv united women who favored prohibition qv as a solution to the poverty and domestic violence that often resulted when husbands drank heavily. Temperance women quickly broadened their agenda and invaded the legislature to lobby as Christian mothers for laws authorizing a boys' reformatory to keep juveniles from being incarcerated with adult criminals (1887), requiring alcohol education in the public schools (1893), forbidding the sale of cigarettes to minors (1899), and raising the age of consent for minor girls (from ten to twelve in 1891, to fifteen in 1895, and to eighteen in 1918). At the same time, women participated more formally in Gilded Age politics by supporting third-party challenges to Democratic domination. WCTU members Jenny Bland Beauchamp and Mary M. Clardy qv served on the platform committee of the Texas Prohibition party at the 1886 and 1890 conventions, respectively, and Beauchamp was a delegate to the national convention in 1887. Women were even more visible in the Farmers' Alliance. qv Female membership was as high as 43 percent in some local chapters, and Texas was the only state alliance that elected women to high office. Mary Clardy served as assistant state lecturer and Fannie Moss as secretary-treasurer in 1892; Frances Leak
