    Combat Roles Considered
There are approximately 32,000 women in the U.S. military, comprising about 13 percent of the total U.S. Armed Forces (Defense Almanac 1995) . In 1970, only 1.4 percent of the total military was comprised of women, a number that more than tripled to 4.6 percent in 1975, nearly doubled to 8.3 in 1980, rose to 10 in 1985, 11 in 1990, to the current 13 percent (Government Executive March 1994) When discussing the history of women in combat, one might think of Joan of Arc who in 1429, at age 17, successfully led French troops into battle against the English. Hundreds of women disguised themselves as men to fight in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Beginning in 1942, separate military services for women were established, but women did not gain professional military status until 1948 when President Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act which limited their number to 2 percent of the total military. In 1991, the restriction of women from flying combat aircraft was repealed, but the 1948 law still bans women from serving on naval combat vessels (Minerva Spring 1994) Some argue that, should combat slots be open to women, women may be subjected to the draft. The male only draft was considered to be constitutional in 1981 in the

Muster Day 2004: On 9 September 1943, the 36th Infantry Division led the allied landing at Salerno, Italy. They carried with them a Texas state flag presented by Governor W. Lee O'Daniel during a visit to the Division at Camp Blanding, Florida. On 22 March 1945, after seven hard-fought and hard-won campaigns stretching from the beaches of Paestum, Italy, through Southern France and into Germany and Austria, the 142nd Regimental Combat Team raised the Texas flag high from the customhouse at Schweigen, Germany. The 36th returned home to Texas where it continued its distinguished service to the state and nation until deactivated on 15 January 1968. Its lineage and honors were carried by the 36th Brigade, 49th Armored Division. On 1 May 2004 the 49th Armored Division was reorganized as the 36th Infantry Division. A formal ceremony will be held during this year's Muster Day.

In 1865 William Booth , a Methodist preacher, founded the Christian Mission in London's East End to help feed and house the poor. The mission was reorganized in 1878 along military lines, with the preachers known as officers and Booth as the general. After this the group became known as the Salvation Army.
Booth sought to bring into his worship services an informal atmosphere that would encourage new converts. Joyous singing, instrumental music, clapping of hands and an invitation to repent characterized Salvation Army meetings.

Selina Cooper , the daughter of Charles Coombe and Jane Coombe , was born in Callington, Cornwall in 1864. Selina's father was a navvy and was away working on a construction job when he died of typhoid fever. Jane, her two youngest children and her seventy-four year old mother were all left destitute by Charles Cooper's death. There was little work in Cornwall so Jane decided to follow the example of two eldest sons, Richard and Charles, and seek work in the textile mills of northern England. Jane Coombe, and her two youngest children, Selina and Alfred, settled in Barnoldswick in 1876. Selina and Alfred soon found work in the local textile mill. Selina, who was now twelve years old, spent half the day in the factory and the other half at school. She was employed as a 'creeler' and it was her responsibility to make sure there was a constant supply of fresh bobbins for the cotton emerging from the card frames. When Selina reached the age of thirteen she was able to leave school and work full-time in the Barnoldswick Mill. Selina received eight shillings for a fifty-six hour week, and this enabled the family to move out of temporary accommodation and rent a small house close to the mill.

WASHINGTON (AP) Female American troops in Iraq have killed Iraqis with bombs and bullets. They've won medals for valor and Purple Hearts for combat wounds. They've been captured as prisoners of war, killed by enemy fire and buried as heroes in Arlington National Cemetery. American women have participated more extensively in combat in Iraq than in any previous war in U.S. history. They've taken roles nearly inconceivable just a decade or two ago flying fighter jets and attack helicopters, patrolling streets armed with machine guns and commanding units of mostly male soldiers. Seven have been killed in combat.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) It's a little sliver of America in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula. For the American military women serving here at the U.S. section of the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, life is no different than it is back home. I asked Brig. Gen. Dale Waters of the U.S. Air Force about the roles and experiences of the women who serve here. "We have women in the wing. They do their jobs just like the men. We haven't had any problems." But that's only when they are on base. When they're off base, all bets are off. That's because of the strict Saudi religious traditions that guide the way women must dress and behave in public. Dr. Abdullah al-Lheedan, an associate professor at King Saud University, explains, "If the women go without a veil at all, people will notice and feel offended, and that's why the government here insists that the non-Muslim wears the minimum requirement of hijab to cover the whole body except the face and the hands."

From the days of the American Revolution to the conflict in the Persian Gulf and today, throughout the World, American women have and are honorably serving in defense of our Nation. In times of war and peace, women have willingly responded to their country's call. Their contributions are characterized by individual and collective acts of self-sacrifice, patriotism, dedication and personal heroism. Yet, how many of us are familiar with their contributions, adversities and struggles? How many of us are aware that women were present on the battlefields of the Great War, in the mud at Anzio and at the fall of Bataan? Full Story.
