U.S Military Women and Military Spouses Should Be Protected, Not Penalized For Serving Overseas Statement by Susanne Martinez
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Vice President Public Policy May 22, 2003 Today, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate defeated amendments by Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) and Senators Murray (D-WA) and Snowe (R-ME), respectively, to restore access to privately funded abortion services for U.S. military women and military dependents overseas. More than 100,000 women live on American military bases overseas. These women, under the current law, are prohibited from obtaining abortion services in military hospitals, even with private funds. This ban threatens the lives of women by forcing them to obtain illegal or inadequate services. Our military women overseas are being denied services that are available to their counterparts in the United States. Is this how we repay women who protect our country with their lives? Now more than ever, the U.S. Congress should put the health and safety of its military women above its anti-choice agenda. Nothing less will do.

Women in the Military in World War II
In 1941, the New York Herald Tribune published a letter from a woman who was tired of sitting at home worrying about the war. "If I were only a man, there would be a place for me," she wrote. Many women shared similar feelings of frustration, eager to play an active role in the conflict, but held back because by law and tradition. But as the war escalated, many countries found they could not afford to exclude half of their adult populations and doors began to open for women. They went to work in factories. Capital cities became overrun with female office workers. Nurses joined the front line troops. And many women were allowed to fly. Fascist ideology dictated that a women’s role in society was as a mother and frowned upon women working in any capacity. A few German women did find ways to work, some in jobs such as ferrying and test pilots. Melitta Schiller was awarded the Iron Cross for conducting 1,500 test dives of new dive bombers. And Hitler favorite Hanna Reitsch, a record-breaking glider and test pilot before the war, flew every Luftwaffe plane and helicopter. Denied permission to organize a women’s flight squadron, she organized a suicide squadron that would use

Role of Women in the Theater of Operations
"They endured the same living conditions, duties, and responsibilities .... They performed
professionally and without friction or special consideration." - US Marine Officer
Introduction
Department of Defense (DOD) women played a vital role in the theater of operations. By late February, more than 37,000 military women were in the Persian Gulf, making up approximately 6.8 percent of US forces. By Service, there were approximately 26,000 Army, 3,700 Navy, 2,200 Marine, and 5,300 Air Force (USAF) women deployed. Women served in almost all of the hundreds of occupations open to them; as a matter of law and policy, women were excluded from certain specific combat military occupational specialties.
Job Functions of Women During Desert Shield/Storm
Women were administrators, air traffic controllers, logisticians, engineer equipment mechanics, ammunition technicians, ordnance specialists, communicators, radio operators, drivers, law enforcement specialists and guards. Many women truck drivers hauled supplies and equipment into Kuwait. Some brought enemy prisoners of war back to holding facilities. Many flew helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft. Still others served on hospital, supply, oiler and ammunition ships. Others served as public affairs officers and chaplains. Several women commanded brigade, battalion, company, and platoon size units in the combat service support areas. They endured the same harsh conditions as their male counterparts. The deployment of women was highly successful. Women performed admirably and without substantial friction or special considerations.

    Saving Private Lori?
    Whitewashing current military history.
R ight before the beginning of the new year, NBC aired a video from Saddam-TV archives that never made it to screen before the fall of the Butcher of Baghdad's regime. The video was of Army Pfcs. Jessica Lynch, 19, and single mother of two Lori Piestewa, held as POWs. In the video the two women are on lying on beds; both members of the 507th Maintenance Company are seemingly near death. Ironically, Saddam TV seemed to have a more realistic view of the video than NBC does. The late regime never aired it. Reporter Richard Engel tells us, "Iraqi television videotaped the American POWs for propaganda purposes, but because the tape of the wounded American soldiers didn't make the Iraqis look like particularly good captors, Iraqi TV employees say they never aired it." So why the positive spin in the United States on such a disturbing story? Because, as Kate O'Beirne wrote in her May 19 NR Shown in the final, holiday-focused days of 2003, most Americans probably have not seen or have already forgotten the images of Lynch and Piestewa. Saddam TV, it would seem, did the ideology of feminism in the military in America a favor: Elaine Donnelly, president of the
