84. GenderGap - Women And The Military
women The military. But while the contributions of the military are well known the contributions of women to the military have been largely ignored or denied.
http://www.gendergap.com/military.htm
"Women's struggle for a place in the armed forces has been about seeking the full rights and responsibilities of citizenship ... They have earned the right to the recruiting poster's promise and challenge: 'Be All You Can Be' ." - Maj. Gen. Jeanne Holm, USAF (Ret.) WOMEN WARRIORS Veteran's Day No marble tomb with honor guard
Or tended grave with neat brass card
No drums, no taps, no flags unfurled
For veterans in the shadow world
Of cardboard crates and railroad yards
Their madness mocked by prison guards
When guns still blaze and choppers whine
With no way off the firing line
In concrete jungles without end
Where all are foe and none are friend. by Marilyn Brown - GenderGap.com AMERICAN WOMEN and the MILITARY MILITARY GLASS CEILING Since Colonial times there have been odd parallels between the United States' attitude toward the military and the military's attitude toward women. Both were celebrated in theory but distrusted in fact. The reality of both was criticized and rigidly controlled at the same time their symbolism was almost worshipped. Ideally both were supposed to appear when needed, successfully complete the mission at hand and then disappear. But while the contributions of the military are well known the contributions of women to the military have been largely ignored or denied.

86. GG In The Military - Women Warriors - Through The 19th Century
Albans. The first recorded effort to bar women from military participation was a law passed in 590 AD at the synod of Druim Ceat.
http://www.gendergap.com/military/Warriors-1.htm
Women Warriors
Pre-History through the 19th Century The Amazons The Greeks, Romans and other early civilizations wrote about or depicted the Amazons in their art. The name Amazon has survived through the ages as a generic term for women warriors. But until recently most of the historians who accepted these same ancient authors and artists as credible sources for information on other aspects of their society dismissed their descriptions of the Amazons as myth. There is a growing body of evidence that the Amazons were as real as the civilizations who wrote of them. They governed large areas of Europe, Asia Minor and Africa. Cities named Amazonium were established on Pontus and the Island of Patmos and numerous ancient cities in Europe, Asia Minor and the islands of the Aegean Sea, including Smyrma and Ephesus, claimed to have been founded by Amazons. A number of these cities stamped coins commemorating their Amazon founders and built statues and temples in their honor. According to historian Jessica Salmonson the Amazons were actually two different matriarchal empires founded, governed and defended by women. The earlier empire, the Hesperian or Gorgon Amazons, were Libyan women warriors who originated on Tritonia, an island off the African coast which was largely destroyed by volcanic eruption with the surviving portion forming the present day Canary Islands. Herodotus wrote of the Libyan Amazons military power as late as the sixth century BC. Myrene, the Gorgon Amazons greatest Queen, conquered parts of Syria, Egypt, Phygia and lands in the Mediterranean including the islands of Samos, Lesbos, Pathmos and Samothrace. She founded several cities which bore her name including the ancient city of Smyrna. A description of a North African battle in which she led a cavalry of 30,000 women is believed to be the earliest record of troops riding horses into combat. Some scholars have theorized that the Centaurs, the legendary half human / half horse warriors of Greek mythology were actually descriptions of Amazons on horseback.

THE JEWISH SOLDIER FOUNDATION
"FIGHTING FOR THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR US"
Our Mission
The Jewish Soldier Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the Jewish men and women who daily risk their lives defending freedom and democracy. Our mission is three fold:
  • to advocate for Jewish soldiers by working with the military and the U.S. Congress to provide educational resources for Jewish soldiers about the rich history and traditions of their faith to offer Jewish soldiers and their families all the elements necessary to observe the tenets of their faith, including books, kosher food, and the full spectrum of ritual services.

Fighting to protect the values of diversity and freedom of religion that are the bedrocks of American values, Jewish soldiers often encounter barriers to observing their own faith while serving in the armed forces. Observant Jews, whose religious tradition is based on strict adherence to ritual law known as halacha, often meet unexpected roadblocks while in military service, due to ignorance, bureaucracy, or both. The Jewish Soldier Foundation is dedicated to breaking down these barriers, so that Observant Jews can serve in the military without having to sacrifice their ancient faith. We believe that Jewish soldiers, who have a long history of serving with valor in this country's wars, should not be forced to choose between serving G-d and country.

92. 1990 National Board Policy: Women In The Military
Policy adopted by NOW in 1990 regarding women in the military.
http://www.now.org/issues/military/policies/wim.html
WOMEN IN THE MILITARY
WHEREAS , during the Equal Rights Amendment fight, our opposition effectively fanned the flames of fear that women would be drafted and thrown into foxholes in some strange and distant country; and
WHEREAS , with women soldiers playing a more significant role in the Persian Gulf than ever before in our military history, we may have an unprecedented opportunity to bring to an end the long debate over whether women should be in combat, to expand career opportunities for women in the military and to remove what has been an overwhelming obstacle to women's equality and the Equal Rights Amendment; and
WHEREAS , exclusion of women from positions arbitrarily defined as "combat" is based on archaic ideas of what women and men are physically and emotionally capable of doing and outdated ideas of what modern military theory and combat are; and
WHEREAS , the definition of "combat" is ambiguous and varies from branch to branch; armed conflicts since World War II rarely involve readily definable front-lines, rear echelon units may be a 30 second missile flight from the so-called front-line, and in modern military theory rear support troops are destroyed first before assaulting those up front; and
WHEREAS , the combat exclusion does not protect women; 80-90% of the casualties in conflicts since World War II have been civilians and the majority have been women and children; women and children are subjected to violence every day on the streets and in our homes; rather than creating restrictions on women under the guise and illusion of protection, we would all be better protected by seeking diplomatic, economic and other non-violent ways to resolve international differences other than armed conflict; and

And, thank you for all you gave to those who needed your care so much, when you were in Vietnam. I know I speak for the families and loved ones of those who made it home and for the families and loved ones of those who did not make it home: the sacrifices made by you and all of the medical personnel who served in Vietnam may not have been glorified; however, your presence was and continues to be held most dear by those for whom you cared and by their families and loved ones."

Excerpt: I am a woman who just happens to be a retired Army Reserve First Sergeant. I have shared my experience and expertise in researching, writing, finding a publisher, and "hitting the road" with my books Memories of MaggieMartha Raye: A Legend Spanning Three Wars, Potpourri Of War: Labors of Love Remembered, and The Sarge's Thoughts. I communicated with Martha "Colonel Maggie" Raye from 1988 until her death in 1994. I came to know and love her. I visited her several times in her Bel Air, California home, where I enjoyed her comments as we watched her old movies together, heard the stories, reminisced, and visited with this remarkable woman about her beloved frontline soldiers.
