Thank you! On behalf of every veteran in America we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Bob Hope. We remember his great gifts to us and we will miss him. His legacy to our men and women in uniform will never be forgotten.
Fifty-seven years have passed since Bob Hope first entertained our country's men and women in uniform. Whenever there was a need, Bob Hope was there. Thanks to him, hundreds of thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have had their spirits lifted. In 1997, by an act of Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton, Bob was made an 'honorary veteran." Upon receiving the award, Bob said, "I've been given many awards in my lifetime - but to be numbered among the men and women I admire most - is the greatest honor I have ever received."

RIP President Reagan
Where it's always Christmas!
We found this letter in a "stack of stuff" in our office:
"Thank you for your letter about your organization's...efforts... I commend all...who have participated in this program. Many of the American servicemen and women must be away from friends and families for long periods. I know that the mail they receive provides an important link to home and can ease the loneliness of being away from loved ones. Best wishes... Sincerely,
GEORGE W. BUSH"
Millions of pieces of
have been sent by Friends of Our Troops
and our predecessors, since the founding of Vietnam Mail Call in 1965,
because our U.S. troops are Great Americans! Young Marine Says:
"We Can't Get Enough!"
OUR OFFICE RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL ON OCTOBER 21, 2002:
"My son is deployed... I submitted his name and address to your web site, and he just e-mailed me today saying that he had received over 300 'troop fan mail' letters. He was so touched, as well as his entire unit. As a Mom, I want to say a huge, big 'THANK YOU, YOU ALL ARE GREAT!' I appreciate your making my son feel appreciated and sharing some happiness. Thanks again." A MESSAGE RECEIVED IN NOVEMBER 2002: "Thank you each and every one of you. Don't let anyone stop you. You are doing a smashing job. God bless you all. Happy Holidays."

The Country Of Our Dreams
Let it be true that we shall find
The country of our dreams;
And walk the moorlans overtwuned,
And Drink from crystal streams The barque that we have set adrift
Is nearly out of sight;
But may our days be not so swift
To savour as we might. Alone we dwell, just you and I,
And lie upon the heath;
Our drooping lids succumb to sky,
And this we sleep beneath. The meadow and the hill we claim, The forest and the beach; The country of our dreams became A land within our reach. by: Terri Russell I recieved this today, by surprise for sure. For the poem above. May 3, 2001 From Caring Women of the Web, Thank you so much. I am so proud. I remember the Vietnam Vets. My brother served there with 101st airbourne. Welcome home guys, it's been long overdue. I salute you! You will never be forgotten.

The Military Service Academies
It literally took an act of Congress to open the United States Military Academies to women. In 1975, then President Ford, signed Public Law 94-106 requiring the services to open the hallowed halls of West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy to women. In the fall of 1976 female cadets began their education and military orientation as the "Class of '80" became the first coed class. When those first classes graduated in 1980 of the 327 women who began, 217 graduated - a whopping 66%. The transition wasn't easy, and the lingering male chauvinist attitude didn't help matters but for the most part women cadets succeeded in ignoring the micro-minded while acing the academics. Academic failure was twice as high for the men.
Women met challenges, and showed they were capable of handling the rigorous physical and military courses. Respect for the abilities of women slowly emerged within the academies and surprisingly the hallowed halls remained in tact and were not painted pink or adorned with Martha Stewart decor.
In 1989, Kristin M. Baker, Class of 1990, was the first female cadet named Brigade Commander and the first woman to command the West Point Corps of Cadets.

Muster Day 2004: On 9 September 1943, the 36th Infantry Division led the allied landing at Salerno, Italy. They carried with them a Texas state flag presented by Governor W. Lee O'Daniel during a visit to the Division at Camp Blanding, Florida. On 22 March 1945, after seven hard-fought and hard-won campaigns stretching from the beaches of Paestum, Italy, through Southern France and into Germany and Austria, the 142nd Regimental Combat Team raised the Texas flag high from the customhouse at Schweigen, Germany. The 36th returned home to Texas where it continued its distinguished service to the state and nation until deactivated on 15 January 1968. Its lineage and honors were carried by the 36th Brigade, 49th Armored Division. On 1 May 2004 the 49th Armored Division was reorganized as the 36th Infantry Division. A formal ceremony will be held during this year's Muster Day.

Captain Rosella Bjornson and First Officer Lee O'Riley on their Pink Zip B737 (how perfect!). Almost an entire female crew. Rosella told us "It (this flight with Lee) was the first time since I was hired (by an airline) in 1973 that I had flown with another female airline pilot. When I was with Canadian Airlines, we had 12 female pilots and Air Canada before the merger had 60 female pilots. They have since hired a few so I think Air Canada had about 80 female pilots out of 3200 males. In Edmonton we have a total of 50 pilots and I am the only woman."

79. Women In The Norwegian Military Forces (Anders Jacobsen's Blog)
It seems to be common belief that if a Norwegian girl is unmarried at the age of 30, she's obliged to enroll for military service.

Anders Jacobsen's blog
... because the Internet changes your life... Main August 12, 2002 Women in the Norwegian Military Forces Over the weekend I heard something really amusing. It seems to be common belief - at least in some circles (of girls) - that if a Norwegian girl is unmarried at the age of 30, she's obliged to enroll for military service. To me, it sounded more like some hen party joke that had developed into an urban legend, but to be sure (and not to offend too much) I promised to research it. I found no info online. What I did find, however, was a reverse, conclusive statement: Norske kvinner er ikke pålagt alminnelig verneplikt. På frivillig basis kan kvinner søke opptak på Forsvarets skoler, søke om å få gjennomføre førstegangstjeneste med muligheter for befalsutdanning under denne, og søke om verving. Norwegian women are not subject to compulsory military service, but may apply for voluntary service. (Source: norge.no - Kvinner i Forsvaret If you have information to indicate otherwise; leave a comment :-) If you too have head the rumour - leave a comment too - it would be interesting to hear how widespread the rumour is?
