Three Cheers for Women In Military Defense!
There is an old expression that says when more than three men get together, they talk about their military service experiences and when more than three women get together, they talk about raising children. But today, talking about one's military service once thought to be a male-only subject is now open to women. It is old news that women fiercely compete to get into the army, with female cadets holding their own at military academies. Exactly 36 years ago on April 1, 1968, a ceremony took place for the establishment of the local defense force. The government felt the need for an unofficial local defense unit after armed North Korean guerillas tried to attack Cheong Wa Dae early that year on January 21. This March 23, a women's defense force establishment ceremony was held in Nam-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. This was the first time local residents participated in the women force ceremony. The entry of women into various sectors of the economy is more and more common. Women are becoming political party leaders and CEOs in economic and business sectors. Although men may feel that opportunities are being lost, it is also true that they probably feel relieved to have a lot of the burden taken off their shoulders.

DEDICATION OF THE WOMEN IN MILITARY SERVICE FOR AMERICA MEMORIAL
October 21, 1997
Mr. Speaker, I was pleased to participate in the celebration of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial on Friday, October 17, when I attended a moving reunion of women veterans and current service members at the DC Armory. I ask unanimous consent to insert my remarks on that occasion in the Congressional Record. In recognition of all that women service members have done for our country, I would also ask unanimous consent to insert the attached profile of six courageous veterans that appeared in the Washington Post on Saturday, October 18, 1997.
Tomorrow, with the official dedication of the Women in Military Service Memorial, America recognizesand rememberswomen who have given so much to our country. I am inspired by your service to the cause of freedom and honored to be with you tonight. This extraordinary gathering is getting the word out. Women in all walks of life are finally learning of your sacrifices, your dedication, and your accomplishments.
You and your predecessors have contributed immeasurably to the defense of our country and the preservation of our liberties. You worked as nurses and doctors, as logisticians, trainers, mechanics, pilotsand more. You did this in the face of overwhelming oddsoften not enjoying the recognition you deserve. And you paved the way for other women to break into other unconventional roles in our society. For this, we are all indebted to you.

Vietnam Southeast Asia
Over 58,000 Americans killed, 200,000 wounded and Women Were There! After one of the most futile conflicts in the history of war, scorned by flag burners and shunned by citizens, G.I's returned to find respect for our troops hitting an all time low. The reaction of the American people to our military was despicable. It has taken years for many servicemen and women to get over it- and some have not.
What is truly unconscionable in the annals of American military history is the fact that little or no data exists on the women who served and, yes, were injured or killed, in Southeast Asia during the Viet Nam era.
Accurate records on how many women were there, what decorations they earned, where they served - and most important - what after effects they have suffered - and continue to suffer - are nonexistent.
However from anecdotal reports, letters, from books by those who were there, from research papers by military historians, and from the excellent text "Women in the Military - An Unfinished Revolution", by Major General Jeanne Holm, USAF (Ret), we can glean the following overview.
Over five hundred WACs were stationed in Vietnam.

American Women Spies

The gathering of information about one's enemy has been around since prehistoric times. From clan head to marauding conqueror, leaders needed to know the strengths and weaknesses of their enemies. Through the ages spying developed into an art form and no one was better at it than women. In the early days of the Revolution many Philadelphia women passed key information along to General Washington at Valley Forge. Lydia Barrington Darragh spied on the British and informed American officers. She made several trips from the city to Washington's headquarters, one in which she concealed an American uniform from the British. All up and down the east coast women spied for the cause. Ann Trotter Bailey carried messages across enemy territory in 1774. Sarah Bradlee Fulton ,sometimes called the "mother of the Boston Tea Party," delivered dispatches through enemy lines. Emily Geiger rode 50 miles through British and Tory enemy territory to deliver a message to General Sumter. During the Civil War Belle Boyd spied for the Confederacy by carrying important letters and papers across enemy lines. She was imprisoned in a Union prison for her espionage activities. Ironically, before the war ended, Belle Boyd married a Captain Harding, a Union naval officer.

http://userpages.aug.com/captbarb/femvets5.html
WAC's arriving at Normandy 1944
While Hitler was skulking around Europe pretending to save Germany the erstwhile military minds in Washington were stonewalling womens organizations, patriotic pressures, and anyone who had the temerity to suggest that women should be in the military. The politicians, in typical gerrymandering fashion, made flimsy promises of considering an auxiliary of sorts while quietly hoping it would all go away and secretly trying to figure out how to stop it. Fortunately Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers and Eleanor Roosevelt thought otherwise.
Congresswoman Rogers introduced a bill on May 28 th, 1941, to establish a Women's Army Auxiliary Corps for service with the Army of the United States. By virtue of its being an auxiliary corps there was no hint of full military status for women.
The bill was dissected, bisected, stalled, lost, amended, sandbagged,
and all but trashed until General George C. Marshall took an interest.
While several government departments cooperated, the Bureau of the Budget continued to stall in spite of pressure from Mrs. Roosevelt, General Marshall and other interested parties and groups. By late November of 1941 there was still no definitive action. At this point General Marshall literally ordered the War Department to create a womens corps. An incident in the Pacific reinforced this order.
