Documentary views Navajo women in military By Pamela G. Dempsey
"We did our mission and we came back home," Platero told the council Tuesday morning. "I'm so overwhelmed right now."
Platero serves in the 82nd Airborne Division. She is planning her third tour of duty next February but will reside in Ft. Bragg, NC until then. She is the mother of three, including a set of five-year old twins and is from Fort Defiance.
"As a female being out there doing a man's job, that's very impressive," said Delegate Leslie Deal.
His sentiments are not uncommon.
"The hardest part about being (in the service as a female) is having to compete against the males," Platero said. "A lot of them look (down on us)."
Navajo women who served before her feel the same.
In an ongoing effort to capture the stories of Navajo veterans for a documentary, ArtReachInternational, a non-profit organization who is sponsoring the project, found that many Navajo women faced the same issues Platero did when they served in the forties, sixties, and seventies.
"The military was unfair to women in a lot of equality issues...it was totally outside their culture," said Angela Barney-Nez in September when the project was just getting underway. "It was not a cooperative setting, it was a competitive setting."

Washington, DC MRCE prepared protective procedures and methods for preliminary designs for a structure to be built inside the National Park Service's Hemicycle at the west end of Memorial Drive in Arlington Cemetery. MRCE's main task was to preserve the historic Hemicycle structure adjacent to the memorial site. Services included geotechnical studies, recommendations for foundations, design of underpinning to facilitate elevator construction within the Hemicycle, and inspection of geotechnical related construction. MRCE investigated the waterproofing problems of the Hemicycle structure and recommended remedial actions. We also investigated subsurface conditions, which include subsurface strata and groundwater conditions surrounding the Hemicycle structure, and recommended the excavation depth and support, waterproofing for the underground structure, and foundation bearing materials.

Don't blame abuse on women in military By Bonnie Erbe
Scripps Howard News Service When first lady Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, the second president of our fair nation, John Adams, and said, "Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors," I don't think she had the abuse pictures from Abu Ghraib prison in mind.
Nonetheless, contemporary Americans who cling tenaciously to Abigail Adams' vision of "ladies" as white-wigged, sewing-circle types who churn their own butter and bear children in mangers without benefit of anesthesia are as much out of touch with today's female as she would be.
Yes, it's the first time in recorded history we've seen digital images of women delving apparently zealously into sexual abuse in a military context. No, we should not be surprised, shocked or taken aback.
Nor should we be fooled by those who use these women's obvious mistakes to push their own predetermined agendas. Most critics of the female participants in Abu Ghraib torture and sexual abuse were adamantly opposed to women's advancement way before these pictures were digitally trajected 'round the world. To call the prison abuse scandal a natural result of sexual tension between male and female service personnel in today's sexually integrated service is like calling peace a natural result of war.
Yes, the latter precedes the former. But that doesn't mean the latter created the former.

Focus: Invite students to share experiences they have had in their homes which changed their lives (for example, a fire in their house that caused them to move to another place). Ask how they changed as a result of this experience? Why did they feel these changes took place? What was so different between their home life before the event and after? Lead the students to discuss the effects on their lives if both parents are working and away from home at times. Procedure: Students will work in pairs to research, reflect, and design a graph or chart of the similarities and differences between life for women before the war and life for women during the war.

Then you look closer, not at the humiliating jumble of naked flesh but at the American soldiers, and you realize that some of them are women. What is already a shocking tale becomes even more obscene and unsettling. Clearly there has been a terrible breakdown in order and discipline at Abu Ghraib prison and elsewhere in Iraq, and perhaps Afghanistan and Guantanamo, Cuba. The officer in charge of the facility at the time the apparent abuses took place was Reserve Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, who has now gone on national television to defend herself. Speaking on ABC's "Good Morning America," Gen. Karpinski says that she "did not know anything about it. And had I known anything about it I certainly would have reacted very quickly."

    American Women In The Military
    by Major Barbara A. Goodno
United States Army Officer Veterans Day, 1993 On this day of honor and tradition, we reflect on the deeds of our nation's veterans. We remark about their bravery, selflessness and sacrifice. And it is right that we do this. The strength of our nation rests with those who defend it who keep and protect it for the generations to come. There is one group of veterans, now numbering nearly two million, who until recently have gone unnoticed. Our failure to recognize them properly is a grave oversight, for their quiet, selfless service has been crucial to our nation. When the nation called, they were there. And when no longer needed, they returned quietly to traditional roles. Today, lest we forget, we must first remember remember what they did, recognize their deeds. These very special veterans we honor today are all the women who ever served in defense of our nation. From the American Revolution to the present, the women in our military have a proud heritage one that predates our democracy. Let's take a walk through history in this case, "herstory." Molly Pitcher, whose real name was Mary Hayes McCauly, earned her nickname by carrying water and grog to her husband and other American artillerymen of the Revolution. She earned her fame, however, at New Jersey's Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778. When her husband collapsed in battle, she immediately took his place, firing the cannon until the battle was over. And there were others during the American Revolution:

The Women in Military Service Memorial was dedicated during a week long ceremony in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 16 to 20. This is the first national memorial celebrating women in the Armed Forces, and focuses on the roles and dedication of nearly two million servicewomen from all walks of life. "This makes up a lot for the lack of recognition women have had in the military, and is going to give them a sense of pride for having served that they didn't have before," said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Wilma L. Vaught, president of the foundation. The memorial at the ceremonial gate to Arlington National Cemetery features an upper terrace with etchings of quotations from various servicewomen on the glass panels and a spectacular view of the Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington Monument. The monument also includes a reflecting pool, a Court of Valor, a semicircular retaining wall and an Education Center that houses a theater and free computer registration for all servicewomen. Through the data base, visitors may access photos, military histories and the individual stories of those registered.

Thursday, September 24, 1998 Women were vital to military success in war By CAROL SMITH
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER A small loophole in Navy regulations changed the course of history for American women. "Is there any regulation which specifies that a Navy yeoman be a man?" Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels asked in 1917. With that question, he solved an emerging manpower crisis as America readied itself for war, and he also made military history, said Lettie Gavin, Seattle author of "American Women in World War I: They Also Served," (University Press of Colorado, 295 pages, $29.95). Gavin, a retired former editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, spent several years racing to track down stories of WWI women before they all passed away. Many of those stories are captured in her book, which is going into its third printing. The women were critical to the success of the military's operation in Europe.
