Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press Journal of Women's History is the first journal devoted exclusively to the international field of women's history. It does not attempt to impose one feminist "line" but recognizes the multiple perspectives captured by the term "feminisms." Its guiding principle is a belief that the divide between "women's history" and "gender history" can be, and is, bridged by work on women that is sensitive to the particular historical constructions of gender that shape and are shaped by women's experience. Women's History
The new emphasis on social history in the late 1960s and early 1970s not only led to an increased awareness of African-American history but also promoted greater scholarly interest in the history of women. Fortunately, the curators of the Library's manuscript holdings at the beginning of the twentieth century had the foresight to assemble one of the nation's best collections for the study of women's experience in America. In 1903, the same year that President Roosevelt directed the transfer of presidential papers and historical manuscripts from the State Department, Librarian of Congress Ainsworth Rand Spofford acquired the personal library and manuscripts of his friend Susan B. Anthony. Accompanying Anthony's papers were four portfolios of documents from her mentor, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the founders of the women's rights movement. These included a manuscript copy of Stanton's controversial best-seller, The Woman's Bible (1895), whichto the horror of many suffragistscriticized church authority and attacked the use of Scripture to promote women's subjugation. Throughout the next half-century, the Manuscript Division augmented the Stanton and Anthony collections with the papers of other prominent suffragistsnotably Carrie Chapman Catt and the Blackwell familyamassing in the process an unparalleled source of documents relating to American women's fight for the vote. The division supplemented the papers of individual suffragists with the records of two significant organizations, the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and its more militant offshoot, the National Woman's Party (NWP). Once suffrage was secured, the NAWSA regrouped as the

    About Legacy '98:
1998 was the 150th Anniversary of the Women's Rights Movement , launched at the world's first Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Throughout 1998, the tremendous positive changes brought about by the movement were celebrated in offices, schools, and communities nationwide in thousands of events. Because of countless millions of women who planned, organized, lectured, wrote, marched, petitioned, lobbied, paraded, and broke new ground in every field imaginable, our world is irrevocably changed. Women and men in our generation, and the ones that will follow us, are living the legacy of women's rights won against staggering odds in a revolution achieved without violence. Women have much to be proud of in the legacy of the Women's Rights Movement, and a great deal to celebrate on the anniversary of the founding of the Women's Rights Movement.

    The Women's Rights Movement 1848 - 1998
Introduction Revolution Declaration Convention ... Complex Issues Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has ." That was Margaret Mead's conclusion after a lifetime of observing very diverse cultures around the world. Her insight has been borne out time and again throughout the development of this country of ours. Being allowed to live life in an atmosphere of religious freedom, having a voice in the government you support with your taxes, living free of lifelong enslavement by another person. These beliefs about how life should and must be lived were once considered outlandish by many. But these beliefs were fervently held by visionaries whose steadfast work brought about changed minds and attitudes. Now these beliefs are commonly shared across U.S. society. Another initially outlandish idea that has come to pass: United States citizenship for women. 1998 marked the 150th Anniversary of a movement by women to achieve full civil rights in this country. Over the past seven generations, dramatic social and legal changes have been accomplished that are now so accepted that they go unnoticed by people whose lives they have utterly changed. Many people who have lived through the recent decades of this process have come to accept blithely what has transpired. And younger people, for the most part, can hardly believe life was ever otherwise. They take the changes completely in stride, as how life has always been.

The major work of the Women’s History Project is to survey and list sources relevant to the history of women in Ireland. Two major databases have been created from work undertaken between October 1997 and August 2001, and both are available here for online searching. The Directory of Sources for the History of Women in Ireland contains information on collections relating to the history of women in Ireland from the earliest times to the present, gathered from public and private repositories in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. The Directory covers over 14,000 collections and sources and contains over 100,000 pieces of information from 262 repositories. Women in 20th-Century Ireland: Sources from the Department of the Taoiseach, 1922-1966 , is the result of a survey that involved examining the files of the Department of the Taoiseach between the years 1922 and 1966. Just under 2,000 boxes of files were examined. Every page within each file was perused to ascertain whether it contained any reference to women. This database contains just under 20,000 entries. Much remains to be done before we achieve an accurate picture of the place of women in Irish history. Our hope is that these databases will assist researchers to contribute to an understanding of that history.
