Women's History Month
Women in Politics: A Brief History
In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California, began a "Women's History Week" celebration. The week was chosen to coincide with International Women's Day, which was first celebrated March 8, 1911, in Europe. Three years later, the United States Congress passed a resolution establishing National Women's History Week, which was expanded to a month in 1978 at the request of the National Women's History Project . Every year since then the U.S. Congress has issued a resolution for Women's History Month. Thomson Gale has assembled a collection of activities and information to complement classroom topics. Within this site, teachers and students can:

46. History Of Women
Contributions made by women to the United States Naval Observatory.
http://maia.usno.navy.mil/women_history/history.html
The Contributions of Women to the United States Naval Observatory: The Early Years.
The United States Naval Observatory has a long and unique role in the American astronomical community. Although the observatory is one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the contributions made by our women staff members have been confined to the last 100 years. This is in part due to the restrictions placed on women by society, as well as those on women in a military institution, and those imposed by the mission of the Observatory. On this page, I will examine the lives and contributions of the handful of young women who came to the Observatory before 1920.
Part 1: History and Background
Women were breaking into the field of astronomy in the late nineteenth century for many reasons. Women were often used at observatories because they could be paid less than men in the same position. Americas most prominent female astronomer Maria Mitchell received a salary of only $800 a year while her male colleagues at Vassar received $2500 a year. In 1900, after almost 20 years of service to the Harvard College Observatory, Williamina Fleming was receiving a salary of just $1,500 a year while male assistants were paid at least $2,500. Flemming's boss, Edward Pickering wrote in his 1898 annual report that women were "Capable of doing as much good routine work as astronomers who would receive larger salaries. Three or four times as many assistants can thus be employed." At the USNO men and women computers (referred to as "Subprofessionals" at the Observatory) were paid the same salary, $1,200 a year in 1906, as dictated by a pay scale set in 1892. However, men were given a path to better job opportunities and were usually not limited to computing for very long.

Our primary purpose in building the website is to extend the historiography of women as lawyers in the United States. To date, there are few texts on the aspirations and accomplishments of pioneer women lawyers, and even less on how the profession has changed as a result of their entry.
We want to encourage and enable both kinds of work through the material we collect here, and we hope in interactive cyber-fashion that visiters will use what they find to become contributors. We welcome submissions to the website, proposed links, and suggestions for articles and sources for the bibliography.

History of Women's Suffrage Home Online Donation and Event Registration About ACWL ACWL Resources ... Email the ACWL In 1995, the passage of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote, celebrated its 75th anniversary. The resolution calling for woman suffrage had passed, after much debate, at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, convened by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. In The Declaration of Sentiments, a document based upon the Declaration of Independence, the numerous demands of these early activists were elucidated. The 1848 convention had challenged America to social revolution that would touch every aspect of life. Early women's rights leaders believed suffrage to be the most effective means to change an unjust system. By the late 1800s, nearly fifty years of progress afforded women advancement in property rights, employment and educational opportunities, divorce and child custody laws, and increased social freedoms. The early 1900s saw a successful push for the vote through a coalition of suffragists, temperance groups, reform-minded politicians, and women's social welfare organizations. Although Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton devoted 50 years to the woman's suffrage movement, neither lived to see women gain the right to vote. But their work and that of many other suffragists contributed to the ultimate passage of the 19th amendment in 1920.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias
Athlete
Participating in numerous sports in which she excelled and set several records, Zaharias is recognized as the greatest woman athlete of the first half of the twentieth century.
Early Life
After the 1915 hurricane which devastated Port Arthur, the family, which included her sister and two brothers, moved to nearby Beaumont. Growing up in the rugged south end of the city, Didrikson was a tomboy who shunned feminine qualities and excelled at a variety of athletic endeavors. She was slim and of average height but had a muscular body and was exceptionally well coordinated. Her hair was cut short like a boy's, and she usually wore masculine clothing. As a youth, Didrikson had a belligerent personality and was constantly involved in fights and scrapes.
Life's Work
Between 1930 and 1932, Didrikson held American, Olympic, or world records in five different track-and-field events. She stunned the athletic world on July 16, 1932, with her performance at the national amateur track meet for women in Evanston, Illinois. Didrikson entered the meet as the sole member of the Golden Cyclone team and by herself won the national women's team championship by scoring thirty points. The Illinois Women's Athletic Club, which had more that twenty members, scored a total of twenty-two points to place second. In all, Didrikson won six gold medals and broke four world records in a single afternoon. Her performance was the most amazing feat by any individual, male or female, in the annals of track-and-field history. The outstanding performance at Evanston put Didrikson in the headlines of every sports page in the nation and made her one of the most prominent members of the United States Olympic team of 1932.
