Wombats clinic, Wompatuck State Park, June 2002. Jeanne Trubek (L) and Angela Kuketz are teaching basis bike mechanics. Jacquie Phelan founded the WOMBATS in 1984 with a mission in mind: "to sustain a women's off-road cycling network so that members may find a riding partner; encourage girls and women to try cycling for the fun of it; learn the trails in their area; improve their riding skills; keep up with the latest news of interest on "women who love mud too much"; enhance awareness of bicycles as a mode of transportation; in short, change the world." " Women have more obstacles than men to overcome when taking up the sport of cycling: from finding equipment that fits to locating a fun riding partner. Mountain biking can be even more daunting with it's macho lingo and current emphasis on techno stuff." - J. Phelan E ver since 1984, Jacquie's been working hard with other WOMBATS to serve up a dish of fat tire fun to women who:
a) "don't like competition"
b) "can't keep up with my husband/boyfriend/the guys"

C o mmon W o mbats THE COMMON WOMBAT Wombats, like all Australian mammals, are protected by law. This information is designed to help you understand and learn to live with them. The wombat is Australias largest burrowing animal. The average adult weighs around 28Kgs with the odd one up to 40Kgs. It is a grazing mammal, very strong and quite fast over short distances. Their life span is thought to be anything up to 20 years. Young are kept in pouch for 6 to 10 months and stay at heel (next to mum) for 18 months. Females have a backward facing pouch (same as Koalas) and have 2 teats, rearing 1 joey at a time. They can drop up to 100 scats (poos) per night. They sleep in burrows by day and at night graze up to 5 hectares. They eat coarse tough, high-fibre native grasses, some favoured being Tussock, Kangaroo, Spears, Rushes and Wire grasses. The occasional Fungi, fibrous bark, fallen twigs and sometimes even burnt logs are nibbled. Most grasses eaten by the wombat are not eaten by sheep or cattle, so therefore wombats help keep these grasses in check. Because wombats are most active at night, wombats found in the day may be sick or injured. Sarcoptic Mange (thought to have been introduced by Europeans with the fox and domestic dog) is infecting many wombats in this area. If you come across a wombat like this Please ring

Wombats Introduction The wombat is a nocturnal animal with teeth that never stop growing. As the wombat eats, they grind their teeth down. The wombat's nearest relative is the koala. The wombat is Australia's biggest burrower. The common wombat is the only wombat not nearly extinct. The wombat is the only marsupial to have a pouch facing the back. The opening faces the back because if it was facing the front it would pick up a lot of dirt.

Wombats Three common wombats live the good life at the Australia Zoo: Dozer and Minibus Chisel , a very naughty male. Common wombats live in southeastern Australia and Tasmania. They prefer heath, coastal scrub and open forest habitats, where the soil tends to be loose and easy to dig. Wombats love to burrow. They are, in fact, the world's largest burrowing mammals. With broad, flattened heads, compact bodies, short, powerful limbs and wide, large-clawed feet, digging is a cinch for the common wombat. A single wombat will establish several burrows, called warrens, in its home range. These are typically built on grassy banks above creeks or gullies, where they have easy access to native grasses and drinking water. Large wombat warrens can include numerous underground branches, several sleeping chambers, and multiple entrances and exits, extending a total length of up to 650 feet. Wombats also build many small warrens, which are usually less than 7 feet in length, to be used as quick escape routes when predators are afoot. They are solitary creatures, known for their intolerance of others. Wombats frequently chase intruders from their burrows and home areas. Curiously though, they have also been observed visiting each other's burrows in apparent peace.

Wombats at Christmas?
A heartwarming tale
Interview by Etta Wilson
Americans young and old have a longstanding love affair with Australian children's author Mem Fox. For Christmas 1996, Fox and illustrator Kerry Argent are returning that affection with a special gift in their new book Wombat Divine The story is vintage Mem Fox with its pudgy wombat who loves everything about the Christmas Nativity play. He's wanted to be in it as long as he can remember, and at the auditions he volunteers for every part only to discover that he's too big for some parts, too small for others, too short, too clumsy . . . until he wonders if there's a part for him at all. The solution will bring joy and perhaps a tear or two to readers during the Christmas season. Argent pictures wonderfully compassionate kangaroos, koalas, numbats, emus, bilbys, and platypuses as poor Wombat grows more disheartened with each rejection for a part. In costume or out, the native Australian animals display such human concern for Wombat that readers of any age or nationality will be immersed in the drama.

Mama Sets Her Wombat Babies on Their Way
It was a hot morning, a morning much like a morning in God's land no doubt. Sunrays sliced through the gum leaves creating a tattoo of hot and barely cool. Mama Wombat was up with the dawn. She enjoyed the morning cool, before it evaporated like a dream leaving only wisps of memory under the shrubbery or the black fur on her belly. This was a special morning. It was the morning she was going to send her beloved wombrats, as she liked to call them, on their way into the world. Oi! Robbo, Bruce, Raelene, get yer fuzzy butts out here." She yelled. Her three darlings came trotting out from their beds eyes half open, limping in that way that you do when you haven't properly stretched yet. They all loved their mother and couldn't be bothered leaving her. "My dear wombrats," she said, "It has become obvious to me that you've all grown into bloody nuisances and it's about time you shifted for yourselves. I've done all a mama can do to prepare you for this moment. Now I want the lot of you to get out. However, your old mama still has a heart, so to get you started in life I've put aside a little money that I'm going to let you have." And with that she gave to each of her children a bright red five dollar bill . Being a fairytale, we presume that this is a lot of money in the world of magical talking wombats.

    Wombats Go to Washington
The American Library Association’s Midwinter meeting was in Washington, DC January 13-17, 2001. Since Council was my only obligation, I had time to sightsee and visit with friends and fellow librarians. The week did not get off to an auspicious start when my flight from Burbank was delayed nearly an hour for lack of flight attendants. Weather evidently further delayed my connection into Baltimore/Washington International Airport. David Busch, whose magnificent cat Center I fostered for ten days after Thanksgiving, waited more than three hours for me to arrive. After I got my luggage, we drove to my hotel, which was on the edge of Washington’s Chinatown. We had dinner with several of our fellow wombats and friends before Mickey Laskin, my roomie for part of the conference, and I wound our way back to the hotel. Although I was busy with Council meetings and visiting exhibits, I still found time to play. I went to the Smithsonian, spending time in the American history museum. They are restoring the original Star-Spangled Banner, and the restoration lab is visible to the public. I also visited the National Archives, insuring that the Declaration of Independence and Constitution – particularly the Bill of Rights – were where they’re supposed to be. The Archives will be renovated and the documents protected differently. I also managed to get to a bookstore or two, particularly a mystery bookstore which was walking distance from the Dupont Circle stop on Metro. I bought a whole bunch of books there – had plenty to keep me occupied in my room and on the way home!

June 27, 2002 Slushy wombats Judith loves her new ice-cream maker. If only she lived a little bit closer by, she could make me her tasty new variation on the Wild Wombat , the Slushy Wombat. (Poor wombat, he's feeling a bit... well, a bit slushy today.) Slushy fresh sorbet + vodka = a very pleasant thing to consume on a sultry Washington evening, and probably an evening where you are, too. If you, unlike me, have an ice-cream maker, do what Judith tells you: "cook up roughly equal amounts of sugar and water in a pot. if you want to add some herbs or other flavorings (ginger, lavender, lemon zest), now's the time. cool. add some fruit that you've pureed. stir. strain if you want. chill. put it into the ice cream maker. hang out for a half hour." For a Slushy Wombat, you would want plenty of fresh ginger and some lime zest, and you would certainly want to strain out those fibrous ginger bits. She tells me that a ripe peach works well for the fruit, which gives it body and the right amount of sugar. Posted by redfox at June 27, 2002 08:46 AM (

I am currently working on my own fact filled wombat page. I haven't finished it yet but I'm putting out what I have. Expect more information and some rearranging. To compensate for what I am currently missing at the bottom of this page I have some links for you to follow. These links are to web pages with wombat facts and wombat fun. I also have links to wombat pictures. I have not checked each link yet. My wombat picture is currently missing. I am going to try to get permission to use it.
    Brief Description
Wombats are thick-bodied animals that have short, powerful legs with strong claws used for burrowing. They range in length from 70 to 120 cm (27-47 in) and weigh up to 35 kg (77 lb). Their heads are relatively large but they have very small tails and small eyes and short ears. Wombats are grayish brown. The common wombat is coarse haired with a naked nose and rounded ears. The two species of hairy-nosed wombats have soft fur and a hairy muzzle and pointed ears that are slightly longer than those of the common wombat. The wombat, like many famous Australian animals is a marsupial. The female has a pouch but, unlike a kangaroo, this pouch opens rearward. This helps prevent dirt from entering the pouch as the wombat digs.
