MARSUPIALIA
VOMBATIDAE Genus LASIORHINUS
Gray, 1863
Hairy-nosed, or Soft-furred, Wombats
There are two species ( Kirsch and Calaby Ride
  • L. latifrons, southeastern Western Australia to southeastern South Australia;
  • L. krefftii, formerly east-central and southeastern Queensland, south-central New South Wales.
The population of L. krefftii in east-central Queensland sometimes is considered a distinct species with the name L. barnardi. The population of L. krefftii in southeastern Queensland, along the Moonie River, has been called L. gillespiei, but that name is a synonym of L. krefftii.
Head and body length is 772 mm to about 1,000 mm, tail length is 25-60 mm, and weight is 19-32 kg (Gordon, in Strahan 1983; Wells, in Strahan 1983). The upper parts are usually dappled with gray and black or brown; the cheeks, neck, and chest are often white, and the remainder of the underparts is gray.
This genus is distinguished from Vombatus by skull, dental, and external characters. The specific name latifrons refers to the great width of the anterior part of the skull. Externally, the fine-haired wombat can be differentiated from Vombatus by its haired nose and relatively longer, more pointed ears. The fur in

WALLABIES, wombats AND POSSUMS. She was paired with a male wombat namedTuffy and both wombats have now been successfully released.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~newtoy/wallabies_wombats_and_possums.htm
WALLABIES, WOMBATS AND POSSUMS I suddenly realised that I don't have a single photograph of some of the wallabies I've cared for, nor do I really have any photographs of the possums, except for the montage on Jaws' page. So here they are - more animals I've cared for plus little Shari the wombat, who came to me in February 1999 after her mother was killed by a car. (Click on the photographs to see the enlargements.) This is Marco, a Swamp Wallaby, shortly after he first came into care in April 1998. His mother was killed by a car and I had him for nearly 10 months. Marco - just before I released him in January 1999. As you can see, Swampies change rather dramatically as they get older. I last saw Marco in August 1999 - he looked wonderful, had grown a bit taller and was obviously thriving. I'm hoping he will get together with Cleo and Zoe, the two female Swampies I released early in 1998. Marco is such a handsome little guy and he should father some beautiful joeys. In 1997/98 I was lucky enough to have two female swamp wallabies, Cleo and Zoe, as well as several Eastern Grey Kangaroos. The two in this photograph are Friday (in the foreground) and Boots, both females. All four were released early in 1998, but sadly little Friday was caught in a fence a couple of weeks later. She had a broken pelvis and I had to have her put to sleep. She is buried in my rose garden alongside her little friend Pam. Boots has successfully raised two joeys and I expect to see another bulge in her pouch very soon.

Do wombats have square faeces and which way do their pouches open? Wombats do indeed have cuboid faecal pellets. Wombats are solitary creatures living in burrows in Australia. They come out at night to feed mainly on grasses and mark their territory with splashes of urine and these strangely shaped faecal pellets. Their pouches, along with other marsupials that crawl along the ground, open in the opposite direction to that of a kangaroos. If the wombat was to stand on its back legs, the pouch would open downwards.

The head is compactly built and is used in constructing tunnels. The limbs are especially powerfully, with short broad feet and strong, flat claws (except on the hallux , which is vestigial). Posture is plantigrade . Wombats are burrowers, building impressive burrow systems with many burrows. Some burrows exceed 20 m in length. Wombats have a remarkably rodent-like skull . http://wildcare.webone.com.au/wombats1.htm
    WOMBATS (page 1) Wombats are known as the bulldozers of the bush. They are immensely strong when fully grown and an adult can weigh up to 30 to 35 kilograms (approximately 80 lbs.). Like all marsupials the females have a pouch but in wombats the pouch faces backwards (the pouch opening is towards the tail). This is to prevent the joey from being covered by soil whilst the mother is digging. (Click on the images to see enlargements of these photographs) This little girl was named Flossie and she weighed less than 250 grams when she came into care. Her eyes were still closed and her ears were down. She was being fed every 4 hours and like all pinky joeys, she needed to be kept at an even warm temperature. A few weeks later Flossie's eyes were just starting to open and her ears were up. This is Shari, she weighed around 3 kg. when this photograph was taken. She was on three feeds a day when this was taken and was very active and playful after her feeds although she slept a lot during the day because wombats are nocturnal. Wombats have amazing feet. You can clearly see the very long claws on four toes. These wear down when the wombat is outside and digging. The "thumb" doesn't have a claw.

    Evolution, Druids, and Wombats Volume 7, Issue 27 When the calendar stopped working in Evolution, it hampered my efforts to get Palm RDF data into iCal. This is how I got it working again. A program is only complete when its last user is dead. I’ve been trying to get my Palm calendar data exported to iCal format. What that really means is, I’ve been trying to get my Palm RDF into RdfCalendar . And what that really means is, I’ve been trying to figure out the RDF Calendar stuff. None of which, as it turns out, has a whole lot to do with this essay. This essay, inspired in part by an offhand remark Dan made in irc (credit where credit is due), is about getting the Evolution calendar working and getting iCal data into it. I’ve been running Evolution about once every six months or so, whenever I decide I have a few minutes to to work on this calendaring project. Running Evolution that infrequently has it’s own amusing side effect. Having gotten all of my calendar data into it once upon a time, when I start it now, it pops up a reminder window for every single event that’s occurred since the last time I ran it . At an average of 15–20 telcons a week and 24 weeks in six months, thats a lot of popups!
