Wombats live in burrows which they dig in the ground. To assist with their burrowing, they have thick, muscular legs and strong claws. Common wombats (pictured) are found in Tasmania and in some parts of New South Wales. Hairy-nosed wombats are rarer and found only in the more arid regions of Australia. Wombats usually forage for food at either dawn or dusk, avoiding activity during the hotter parts of the day, when they often bask in the sun at their burrow entrance. Wattle the wombat, 1.98Mb QuickTime movie (at Bonorong Wildlife Park) Wombats generally eat grasses and leaves in bush clearings. The wombat population in Tasmania is significant, and wombats tunneling under fences after grazing on farmlands sometimes annoys farmers. Burrows are usually well hidden and wild wombats are not often seen by the public.

Since wombats are quite timid and are primarily nocturnal, they're difficult to observe in their natural habitat. Consequently they have not been well studied. There isn't an abundance of detailed data available about wombats, and what there is is often contradictory. Information was gathered from a number of sources, so differing viewpoints are included where appropriate. For a complete list of sources, see the

Julie's Annual New Mexico Ride
I arrived early at White Sands National Monument for the ride but there were already lots of bikers picnicking, preparing bikes, comparing stories of past rides. A definite sense of excitement in the air. The Monument is in the desert of southern New Mexico, surrounded by mountains on all sides. Imagine thousands of acres of white gypsum sand dunes open to bikes only after dark on a full moon! From the visitors center, we get only a hint of what lies beyond, "out there", tall white dunes, and lots of vegetation, creosote, mesquite, ocotillo, salt bush, grasses.

Because wombat babies live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk, wombats are marsupials Baby wombats stay with their mum for about two years. They then have to look after themselves. Wombats have thick soft fur. Their strong legs and claws are good for digging burrows to live in. They are very shy. They are nocturnal animals. Most of the day they sleep in a burrow. In the evening or at night they go looking for food. They are herbivores To keep themselves clean they have a dust bath. They lie on their side and scoop sand over themselves. They can swim. Their teeth grow continuously, so if they break a tooth it just re-grows. Wombat droppings are called scats. Each wombat's scats have a different smell. They leave them outside their burrows.

Secret Sex Life of Wombats
Thursday, 7 November 2002
How do you get a wombat to have sex? Apparently they’re pretty picky and can get nasty if they don’t fancy their date.
Catriona McCallum, thinks trying to get wombats to 'get it on' is the best job in the world. She's been studying the mating habits of wombats in an attempt to start a successful captive breeding program for common wombats at Western Plains Zoo in NSW.
Her research into their fertility cycle, preferred habitat and eating habits has been a success with a world first outcome: twin baby wombats. This captive breeding program for common wombats is being developed for use as a model to help save the highly endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats. (full transcript...) Reporter: Paul Willis

    WOMBAT
The wombat lives in hilly forest country and it likes to burrow underground. A burrow can be as long as 20 metres. Wombats quickly dig complicated tunnels with their strong legs and sharp claws, and then they push loosened soil away with their hind feet. Did you know that a wombat likes to live alone? Wombats live alone in their burrows, but other wombats may be in a tunnel close by, or sometimes burrows can interconnect. Wombats are very shy animals. They usually rest in or near their burrows during the day and come out at night to eat. Farmers consider wombats pests because they damage crops and fences, and cattle may break their legs by stepping in wombat burrows. The burrows also provide shelter for rabbits which also damage crops. For these reasons, farmers are often eager to rid their farms of all wombats. The hairy-nosed wombat lives in dry, grassy regions of Australia. This kind of wombat uses its burrow to control its temperature. By staying in its burrow during the day, the wombat keeps cool and conserves water in the summer, and stays warm in the winter. back
