Mathematics Department Website ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers a liberal arts major, leading to a bachelor of science or bachelor of arts in mathematics from the College of Letters and Sciences, or a teaching major, leading to a bachelor of science in education from the College of Education. The liberal arts degree requires 35 credits in mathematics and 15 elective credits selected from a concentration in the student's area of interest. Popular options are algebra, analysis and statistics. Many students also show interest in actuarial science. By selecting courses in statistics, analysis, computer science and actuarial mathematics, students are well prepared to take several beginning actuarial examinations before graduation. The teaching major requires 36 credits and six elective credits in mathematics to strengthen a particular area of interest. Both degree choices provide students with a strong background for advanced study at the graduate level. Each program offers students a basic core of ideas which serve as the basis for study in a specialized area of mathematics.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Mathematics majors have a wide variety of courses to choose from to design a program of study that meets their particular career paths. Careers may be found in the following areas:

EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND THE WORLD OF WORK
A crucial factor in the formation of vocational identity is self-esteem. McDonald and Jessell (1992) found that those seventh and eighth graders who believed a variety of careers were possible for themselves had high self-esteem, could assess complex career information, and were primarily female, of middle to high socioeconomic status, and from two-parent families. Although boys thought most jobs were appropriate for either sex, 75% were unwilling to make nontraditional choices for themselves (ibid.). Although females appear more open to nontraditional careers at this age, middle school girls begin to feel the effects of gender bias on their aspirations (Silverman and Pritchard 1994). These findings suggest that middle school students need to learn to think about the future; recognize their responsibility for educational planning; broaden their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level; develop and maintain self-esteem; develop cognitive complexity (essential for the knowledge work of the future); have parental support for career choices; understand how school relates to future life roles; and recognize the broad scope of work in the 21st century.

he area that would become Wisconsin was originally claimed as part of New France by French fur traders and missionaries in the 1600's. Jean Nicolet, who reportedly was the first European to reach Wisconsin, landed on the Green Bay shore of Door County in 1634. French influence was greatest at the fur trading posts along Wisconsin waterways, but actual control remained largely in the hands of local Indians during this period. Great Britain acquired Wisconsin at the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763. The British built first and made the area part of Quebec Province.
The American Revolution forced Britain to cede the area to the United States in 1783. Actual British control of the area did not end, however, until 1814, following the conclusion of the War of 1812. As a U.S. territory, Wisconsin was initially governed by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, and then by the laws of Indiana Territory, Illinois Territory, Michigan Territory and finally, on July 4, 1836, Wisconsin Territory, as surrounding territories broke away to become states and join the Union. Initially, Wisconsin Territory included all of modern Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas. The first legislature met at Belmont and the second at Burlington, Iowa. Shortly thereafter, the portion of the territory west of the Mississippi River became Iowa Territory, and Madison became the capital of Wisconsin Territory.Wisconsin was admitted to the Union as the 30th state on May 29, 1848. On May 29, 1998, Wisconsin marked the sesquicentennial of its statehood.

Vocational-Technical Education Carl Perkins Directory Hot Topics Resouces ... Upcoming Events Carl Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act (CPA) Grants: CPA is designed to improve and promote high school (grades 7-12) vocational education programs to train young people for employment, and/or to better prepare students for post-secondary training opportunities (colleges, trade schools, and/or universities). Usually, this involves Agriculture Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Education, and Technology Education (formerly known as Industrial Arts). Other programs covered in vocational education are career education, guidance, work-based learning, computer-related instruction, applied/integrated instruction, marketing education, health occupations, and wage-earning home economics. The federal government funds the program through DPI. Every district is allocated an amount based on school and "special populations" counts. Special populations includes students in such categories as ethnic minorities, academically disadvantaged (less than a "C" average), economically disadvantaged, and students with disabilities. Districts with allocations above $15,000 may apply directly to the DPI provided they have a Local Vocational Education Coordinator to oversee the funds. Those schools who have less than a $15,000 allocation must enter into a consortium of schools large enough to at least equal the $15,000 threshold. Often, a CESA is used as fiscal agent for consortiums. The CESA 8 LVEC provides consortiums with assistance in planning, purchasing, program monitoring, evaluation, and fiscal management. LVEC also assists in staff development and keeps schools updated on vocational issues.

HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE The Wisconsin Indianhead Vocational, Technical and Adult Education District was created on July 1, 1972. WITC is the largest of 16 districts encompassing 20% (10,900 square miles) of the state in northwest Wisconsin. Campuses are located in Ashland, New Richmond, Rice Lake and Superior. The district's administrative offices are located in Shell Lake. Campuses in existence before the district was formed were established as a result of the statutes enacted in 1911 by the Wisconsin Legislature, which required vocational schools to be established in cities with populations of 6,000 or more. Consequently, the city of Superior (1912) was the first location in northwest Wisconsin, and the second in the state, in which a technical school was founded. Schools were also established in Ashland (1921) and Rice Lake (1941). In 1965 the Wisconsin Legislature enacted the Wisconsin Area District Law. This Law (Chapter 292, Laws of 1965) required a "master plan" to be developed by the Wisconsin Board of Vocational, Technical and Adult Education (VTAE) creating districts in the state by July 1, 1970. On July 1, 1967, District 18, consisting of Burnett, Polk, St. Croix, and Pierce counties, was approved for operation. The District had a population of 87,000; a total area of 3,450 square miles; and 22 school districts operating within its boundaries. Because no central facilities were available, a limited number of vocational courses were offered in area high schools, the emphasis being on agricultural programs.
