... Community Gathers To Support Fallen 5th-Grader's Family MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin's attorney general has issued an opinion that the federal government can't force states to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act without fully funding it. The opinion released Thursday was the first in the country from a state attorney general on the education reform measure, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager said "clear and compelling" language in the law itself says the federal government can't make states or school districts pay the law's mandated costs for improved education.

Eric Hurwitz
(The Ohio State University)
The following excerpt gives a brief description of Brooklyn, Wisconsin. It comes from a cookbook put together by the Village as was offered to me by the City Clerk, Linda Stace:
Brooklyn Today
In 1992 the population of Brooklyn, Wisconsin is 789, consisting of 300 households. It has grown almost 20% in the past 16 years. It is still growing.
Of the village's population, about half are under the age of 18. (And you thought you were imagining all those kids. . . . ) Children in Grades K-5 attend Brooklyn Elementary School which is in the process of remodeling and expanding to serve the growing population. Older kids attend Middle School, Junior and Senior High School in Oregon. All of Brooklyn's young people receive a quality education set forth by the high standards of the Oregon School District.
Brooklyn boasts two parks for playing, picnicking and relaxing: Smithfield Park on the east edge of the village and the Brooklyn Jaycee Park in the center of town. The American Legion Softball Diamond, next to the Jaycee Park, is the site of league softball games on most summer nights and the Brooklyn Softball Association's Tournament every September. Area residents also enjoy a little noisier competition every fall, the American Legion Tractor Pull. T he spiritual needs of the Village are met by two churches, Brooklyn United Methodist and Brooklyn Lutheran. Sunday School, choir, dinners and a food pantry are some church-sponsored activities. Joint services between the two churches are held during summer months. Mount Hope Cemetery provides a final resting place for many Village residents.

Answer Book ... Community pages Schools to look inward for institutionalized racism 11:35 PM 8/22/03 Doug Erickson Education reporter Frustrated by a nagging achievement gap that separates minorities from their white peers, the Madison School District is confronting the unpleasant possibility that institutionalized racism holds back students of color. Of the 27 pupils taking Algebra III, only three were students of color like herself, she said. It was a depressingly familiar sight. Knight added that some students of color are too quick to view every interaction with a staff member as racially charged, and he said students in general need to respect teachers more. Singleton, a former admissions director at the University of Pennsylvania who now runs a consulting business in San Francisco, argues that to close the gap, educators must be aggressively anti-racist, not merely non-racist.

There are currently 78 students with varying degrees of visual impairment enrolled full time, with other students, receiving short term educational services. WSVH WSVH offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Students can train and compete in everything from track and field to swimming, wrestling, and cheerleading. The athletic teams offer an excellent opportunity for students to stay fit, have fun, and socialize with kids from the community, as well as other blind children and teens from around the country. Non-athletic activities include area Scouts, volunteer community service, student council participation and activities, horseback riding, 4-H, speech and music competitions, and our annual prom. The recreation department takes care of what little downtime remains with optional outings, bike rides, bingo games, and supervised hangout sessions in our teen center.
Gem of Rock County
The Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped ( WSVH ) is located in southern Rock County on the south bank of the Rock River. It has been in this residential Janesville location since June 1, 1852, although the school was actually incorporated on February 9, 1850, four months after instruction had begun for its first eight pupils. Though several changes have occurred in its programming, facilities, and grounds, its original mission - providing an exemplary education to prepare visually handicapped students to live independent, full, and rewarding lives - has remained the same for those who have served as faculty and staff throughout its history.
