http://www.uww.edu/factsheets/jour.html
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The journalism major, housed in the Communication Department and the College of Arts and Communication, is a specialized degree offering career preparation in print and broadcast journalism, advertising, and education (when paired with an English major). Upon graduation, students will have had extensive coursework in which proficiency in written and oral forms of communication are stressed. In addition, at least one internship is strongly recommended. In the Communication and Art Department computer laboratories, students learn the latest technology in text, photo editing, publication and advertising design. Student job preparation is enhanced by on-the-job experience at Cable 19, the campus television station; WSUW, the campus radio station; and the Royal Purple, the student newspaper. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The UW-Whitewater journalism major prepares students for a number of careers, including:
  • Writing, reporting or editing for a newspaper, magazine, web site or other publication Working as a photographer or photo editor for a newspaper, magazine or other publication

Public Relations
Public Relations majors will be expected to:
  • write news releases, speeches, letters, newletters, and feature stories;
  • speak persuasively and informatively,
  • conduct research,
  • work with media to promote public events.
Recent graduates have worked with fundraising campaigns, advertising agencies, and health care public relations. A teaching staff consisting of veterans to the field of public relations brings personal, "real world" experience to each class. This, combined with other advantages offered to the student, makes the Public Relations department a great starting place for a growing profession.
Public Communication
Public Communication is a great field for students to learn various skills that will enable him/her to succeed in life. According to the National Preference in Business and Communication done in 1989, "employers state that the number one quality they seek in a potential employee is the ability to speak." Public Communication helps students develop the ability to speak as well as to think critically, which is a tremendous asset in today's work force. "Today's employers want people. . . who can think independently, research issues and problems and who can develop and articulate a position." (Communication Careers Brochure) Public Communications can develop these skills with courses such as Research Methods, Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Listening Behavior. "Students looking for a marketable degree applicable to a variety of professional settings should seriously consider the study of Public Communication."

Recycling in Wisconsin contributes to our economy
By Scott Hassett
Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
Think recycling and what comes to mind? Most Wisconsin residents associate recycling with sorting glass, plastic and metal containers along with newspapers, magazines, and cardboard for municipal recycling collection programs. But that's only part of the picture.
Businesses and industries recycle these materials plus a host of others, turning what would have been trash into a valuable economic resource. Their efforts to reduce waste and reuse resources on top of recycling add further benefit to the bottom line. In Wisconsin, we take pride in the fact that our state recycling program, enacted nearly 15 years ago, has matured to the point that it's now a major contributor to our state's economy and a part of our citizens' everyday lifestyle.
The benefits of our recycling program are tangible. Our strong household and commercial recycling programs divert about 1.5 million tons of waste from landfills each year. When we add in reuse and on-site composting of yard waste, the landfill diversion rate exceeds 40 percent.
Through the combined efforts of individuals, business, industry and government at all levels, we've been able to avoid building the equivalent of a new landfill or landfill expansion every two years. What's more, we are protecting our environment and preserving natural resources while making a positive contribution to the state economy. Wisconsin's recycling activity directly supports over 30,000 jobs, with an annual payroll of over $1 billion.

Generation Y - 18-24 Year Olds:
  • Six percent of the fall visitors were Gen Y-ers. Eighty-one percent were Wisconsin residents, 7% Illinois residents, 5% Minnesotans, and 2% Iowans. Gen Y-ers typically traveled with their friends, extended families, or alone. The majority of their travel parties did not include kids under the age of 18. Over half had annual household incomes of less than $30,000; 28% had incomes between $30,000 and $40,000. They primarily stayed in resorts, with family and friends, or camped in tents. They indicated that festivals and events as well as visiting family and friends were their most important trip-related activities. More than the other generations, this group relied on word-of-mouth recommendations. They were long-range planners - 41% planned their fall trip in June or July, 13% planned it prior to June. They mentioned newspapers, the Internet, magazines and cable TV as a means to advertise to them in the future
