Employment Application (printable PDF format) Site Map The "400" State Trail, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Juneau County Omaha Trail are the three bicycle trails that meet in Elroy. They are all built on discontinued rail lines that once served the area. They are also used as snowmobile trails in the winter. (Check links further down the page.) The Elroy-Sparta trail was the first official "rails to trails" bicycle trail in the nation. The Elroy-Sparta trail and the "400" trail join at the Elroy Commons, and the Omaha trail is connected by way of the new covered bridge. For information about the bike trails click here The Elroy Commons, built in 1991, is a lovely downtown park providing a trailshop, information center, restrooms with shower facilities, pay phone, parking, bike rentals, picnic areas and a tot lot. The Schultz City Park, one half mile south of the Commons, has facilities for tent camping, R.V. electrical hookups, swimming pool, volleyball courts, tennis courts, ball diamond and a new children's playground. More Information Quick Facts about Wisconsin's History: While searching for the Northwest Passage, French explorer Jean Nicolet visited Wisconsin in 1634. He arrived at Green Bay, and traveled southwest via the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers until he reached the Mississippi. Some 200 years later the Wisconsin Territory was organized and Madison was chosen as the permanent capital. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state in the Union with Nelson Dewey serving as the first governor. According to most sources, Wisconsin means: "Gathering of the waters" and is derived from the Ojibwe language. The state was once home to more than a dozen Indian tribes, including the Winnebago, Potawatami, Oneida and Menominee.
