Japanese Internment Camps
During the 1880s, Asian immigrants, mostly Chinese, were imported to the United States. By 1908, 135,000 Japanese had arrived. With the Oriental Exclusion Proclamation (1907) the U.S. government limited Japanese immigration. By 1924 further immigration was banned and those who had entered the country earlier were barred from becoming U.S. citizens. This ban was not lifted by Congress until 1952! On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 that authorized US government to forcibly roundup 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry into 10 internment camps At this time, the Canadian government interned 26,000 Japanese Canadians. Look at Ansel Adams's photos of Daily Life, Portraits, Agricultural Scenes, and Sports and Leisure Activities in the Manzanar internment camp Why and where were these camps established? 25. UWEC G367 Vogeler -- Architectural Styles Index
Created by Ingolf Vogeler of the University of wisconsin as a guide to styles in the American Midwest. He gives the distinctive features of each type, illustrated by an example. Bibliography.
http://www.uwec.edu/Geography/Ivogeler/w367/styles/styles.htm
Architectural Styles
Buildings are used for many purposes and are therefore classified into houses, stores, churches, governmental, and industrial. We will only concern ourselves with single-family residential and commercial structures, which are commonly found in Eau Claire and in the western Midwest. Buildings are classified into distinctive styles:
Residential Styles Commercial Styles
Study each so that you can recognize them when you are walking in Eau Claire and other US cities. A list of references is provided.
You have two ways to search for particular building (residential and commercial) styles:
Click on the letter to find an architectural style
To find specific styles by name, decade, number of stories, and building materials, use search At the bottom of all pages associated with this section, you will see this icon:
Click on this icon to return to this sectional page The great variety of house styles can be grouped by decades using the number of stories . Multiple and single stories houses were built in each decade, but certain heights predominated, as shown in the graph. But less common height types were also built: for example, one-story two-pen houses were built in the 1880s-1890s; two-story Art Deco houses were built in the 1930s; and one-story houses with huge roofs were built in the 2000s.

Activity 2 From the map sites in the WisKids Library, choose two maps of wisconsin(or another state that you are studying) that are quite different from one
http://www.ecb.org/exploring/activity.htm
Activities: You Are a Geographer
One place where you can find different kinds of maps is on the Internet. The "Maps" section of the WisKids Library links to several Web sites where you can find maps. Below are two activities that make use of online maps. Activity 1
Choose one of the mapping situations below or make up your own. Using the U.S. Census Bureau's map-making site, U.S. Gazetteer , create a map of your town or a different area that would be useful for your imaginary purpose. First, decide whether you want to zoom in or zoom out.
The U.S. Gazetteer lets you create maps with about 20 different features, but select only the ones that would be useful to you in the situation you've chosen. (Including unneeded features will make the map harder to read.) Then print out the map. List the features you included in your map and explain why you used each one. Mapping Situations
  • You are moving to Wisconsin and you need to choose a city where you want to live.

MAPPING SCIENCES AT UW-RF? GEOGRAPHY is a field that uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand patterns of human activity and natural processes on the surface of the earth. Geographers are often called upon to analyze and solve problems that deal with interactions between people and the environment. Geography appeals to students who have a wide range of interests that involve human activities and their impacts on the natural environment. MAPPING SCIENCES are a set of techniques that include Cartography (the art and science of map making), GIS - Geographic Information Systems (the analysis of spatial patterns), and Remote Sensing (the analysis of satellite imagery). These techniques are useful in displaying, understanding, and analyzing spatial relationships. Many other disciplines, such as biology, business, marketing, criminal justice, land use planning, and urban studies utilize mapping techniques.
Studying geography and mapping sciences at UWRF provides the skills to engage in a variety of careers. Through a combination of coursework and internships students gain first hand experience in geographic analysis. The use of computer technologies, through GIS and mapping, are areas where students may develop additional expertise. The department offers a Major and a Minor in Geography, a Minor in Geographic Information Systems and Cartography, and a Major in Broad Field Social Studies (Geography)/Education.

    Geography
The most notable physiographic feature of the state is its profusion of lakes, over 8,500, ranging in size from Lake Winnebago (215 sq mi/557 sq km) to tiny glacial lakes of surprising beauty. The Wisconsin River, with its extensive dam system, runs generally southward through the middle of the state until it turns west (just NW of Madison) to flow into the Mississippi, dividing the state into eastern and western sectors. Running a parallel course just to the east, Wisconsin's major watershed extends in a broad arc from north to south; to the east the Menominee, the Peshtigo, the Wolf, and the Fox rivers flow E and NE into Lake Michigan, while to the west the Chippewa, the Flambeau, and the Black rivers make their way to the Mississippi. Wisconsin's frontage on lakes Superior and Michigan as well as its many beautiful lakes and streams and its northern woodlands have made it a haven for hunters, fishermen, and water and winter sports enthusiasts. There are numerous state parks, forests, and two national forests. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Saint Croix and Lower Saint Croix national scenic rivers (see

WIGA: "Helping Wisconsin teachers to teach geography with solid content and exciting classroom strategies."
The Wisconsin Geographic Alliance is a non-profit educational partnership of K-12 teachers, college geographers and educators, school administrators, and other concerned citizens dedicated to revitalizing the teaching and learning of geography in our state. This grass-roots network focuses its energies into three critical areas: teacher education, curriculum and materials development, and public awareness.
The Wisconsin Geographic Alliance is a leader in a nationwide network of state alliances organized and sponsored in part by the National Geographic Society. Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, launched this campaign in 1985 with a long-term financial and organizational commitment to the nation's teachers and students. Grosvenor dispels any outdated notions about geography's relevance to our lives.

Wisconsin. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Wisconsin, the "Badger State"
Abbreviation:
WI The state's name is an English version of a French adaptation of an Indian name said to mean "the place where we live." In 1634, Frenchman Jean Nicolet became Wisconsin's first European explorer. The French controlled the area until 1763, when it was ceded to the British. In 1848, Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state. Wisconsin's natural beauty has made the state a favorite playground of the nation. Vacationers enjoy the state's clean lakes, rolling hills, quiet valleys, deep forests and cool, pine-scented breezes. The winters are ideal for skating, skiing, snowmobiling and tobogganing. Many communities stage curling matches during the winter and others hold snowmobile derbies. Many annual events celebrate the state's rich ethnic heritage and diversity. With the nickname "America's Dairyland," it's no surprise that Wisconsin is first in the country in the production of milk, cheese, and butter. In fact, the loyal fans of the Green Bay Packers football team call themselves "cheeseheads." Milwaukee, the state's largest city, helps make Wisconsin one of the largest manufacturing states in the nation.
