    LESSON FIVE
    SCHOOL RECORDS
Education for Wisconsin Indians began with the arrival of the missionaries.
The 1880's brought another change. It now became standard practice for Indian children to be taken from their families and sent to boarding schools.
After graduation students from Wisconsin went to: Flandreau, South Dakota, Genoa, Nebraska; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and Haskell in Lawrence, Kansas. Occasionally two students would meet while at school and marry, with one or both never to return to their original home.
It is possible to find if one of your ancestors attended a boarding school and which one. One of the questions on the federal census of 1910 Indian Schedule was about schools attended. The 1900 census (taken during the school year) lists the students as residents of the schools. Indian census rolls, such as the Durant Roll of 1908, list the school name as place of residence for students away from home.
School records can give name, age, and names of parents. Siblings are sometimes sent to the same school, as are children in neighboring families.
Among the government schools attended by Wisconsin Indian students were:
Haskell Institute was established in 1884 in Lawrence, Kansas. Records 1884-1954 are available at the National Archives - Kansas City Branch, 2312 East Bannister Road, Kansas City, MO 64131 (861) 926-6272. These include general correspondence 1886-1954; individual student folders 1884-1954; student records 1894-1896; records of accounts of individual Indians 1909- 1954; claims files, and minutes of Haskell Club Meetings. (LDS film 1205530 has school census reports 1939-1942; films 1025530, 1239896, 1249897, and 1249899 also have information on Haskell students.).

Conserve School was established in 1996 as the wish of the late James R. Lowenstine, who had been Chairman of the Board and President of in Chicago. Realizing the importance of conserving the area's natu ral resources, Mr. Lowenstine bequeathed his wealth and 1,200 acres of pristine woodlands in Northern Wisconsin to found a school that would teach young people the importance of stewardship and ethical, environmental leadership. The property has 22+ miles of trails to hike, bike, snow shoe, and ski and encompasses or adjoins seven snow-fed lakes. Conserve School is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, college preparatory boarding school for bright students in grades 9 through 12, emphasizing the environment, ethics, and innovation. At Conserve School students combine traditional subject areas with the unique areas of environmental science, technology, and outdoor recreation. The program prepares all graduates to be ethical and environmentally sensitive leaders and stewards within any career choice. Conserve School is located in the Northwoods resort community of Land O' Lakes , Wisconsin (population 880). By K. Yarbro, UWSP News Services Released: June 9, 1999 New exhibit at Plover museum Did you know that the famous magician, Houdini, performed at the Stevens Point opera house, later known as the Fox Theater? Do you know where the term "spud" came from? Did you know that in 1899 a typical bicycle cost $150, about half a year’s wages, compared to a suit that cost $15? The answers to these and hundreds of other history questions are available at the Portage County Historical Society’s Heritage Park Museum in Plover. An exhibit, "Days Gone By: Life in Portage County Was Different in 1899," in the old Methodist Church of the Heritage Park Building, will open June 13. The museum, located between Willow Drive and Washington Avenue in Plover, will be open through September on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. One exhibit that details the history of potato cultivation by Polish immigrants to Portage County includes tools used for hand planting 100 years ago. Models of potato fields feature miniature crates with tiny potatoes. Underneath large wooden potatoes are answers to potato trivia questions. Visitors will learn that a spud was a particular type of spade used for digging potatoes in Ireland. "It was neat to talk to people who know the history of the band," said Paul Nylund, Milwaukee. "They were really interested in our class project."

Brian O'Reilly, in the January 1, 1990 issue of Fortune Magazine, wrote a good article on why children of successful executives often need professional counseling or special purpose schools. Quality special purpose schools mentioned that can help these children were CEDU School, Franklin Academy, Brown School, and DeSisto School. Harold Hodgkinson's Opinion Harold Hodgkinson, Education Demographer, in Teacher Magazine, says "Instead of looking at the people who move through the educational system,...policymakers almost always make the mistake of focusing on the system itself." Thomas Bernet Does Survey Thomas Bernet, Purdue University researcher, in a survey of middle grades students found children are more likely to run into trouble in school when they don't have healthy friendships.

And we had the help of so many people." This is how Patricia Hrabik Sebby, former preservation officer, remembers the first years of the Lac du Flambeau tribal historic preservation program, one of only eighteen in the country to have assumed the duties of a state historic preservation office. The Lac du Flambeau reservation covers 144 square miles, a scenic mixture of pine and hardwood forest, lakes, wetlands, and rivers. Located in northern Wisconsin, the reservation was established in the mid-19th century through treaties with the U.S. government. Ten Lake Superior Ojibwe bands live on reservation land in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. Five other tribal governments retain holdings in Wisconsin: the Menominee, Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk (formerly Wisconsin Winnebago), Stockbridge-Munsee, and Oneida.

Lawsuit Alleges Abuse at Indian Schools
From Maureen
By CHET BROKAW
Associated Press Writer

ROSEBUD, S.D. Sonny One Star says he learned not to cry or scream when he was beaten and sexually assaulted at his Roman Catholic boarding school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.
Four decades later, he says it is time for a different approach.
"Today, I'm ready for retaliation," said One Star, a leader on the reservation.
He and five other Sioux are suing the federal government for $25 billion on behalf of perhaps thousands of students allegedly abused at Indian boarding schools around the country. They hope to have the case certified as a class-action.
"The nuns and the priests the ones who are still living I just want to let them know I'm coming after them," said One Star, 46, who attended the St. Francis Mission school, one of the three Catholic schools named in the lawsuit. "It was fun for them back then, but I want to get justice. I want to get even."
