154. Bardon Data Systems: How Secure Is The Windows Operating System?

http://www.bardon.com/wp_windows.htm
How Secure is the Windows Operating System? Bardon Data Systems
www.bardon.com The vast majority of business computers use the Microsoft Windows operating system. Most companies have Windows workstations on the employee's desktops, networked to servers which may also run a version of Windows. Since Windows rules the corporate world, it is a fair question to ask whether it natively provides the security that enterprises need to protect themselves and conduct efficient business operations. Unfortunately, the answer to this question has historically been "No". Microsoft continually releases "Critical" (their term) update patches to correct security infractions within portions of Windows. Even Bill Gates himself decided that Microsoft wasn't doing a good enough job at securing Windows, and recently refocused the entire company to concentrate on security. Some security vulnerabilities are inherent in the structure of Windows itself, and cannot be corrected with a simple patch. The fundamental architecture of Windows was not designed with security as a high priority. Because Windows consists of millions of lines of programming code, it would take Microsoft years to completely revamp their products from a security perspective. This is a technically daunting task, and one that surely gives Microsoft pause from a business resources perspective. Without completely scrapping the billions of dollars and countless hours they have invested in the existing Windows architecture, Microsoft must adopt an "as-needed" approach to correcting security problems for the foreseeable future.

New Windows could solve age-old format puzzleat a price By Mike Ricciuti
    Staff Writer, CNET News.com
March 13, 2002, 4:00 a.m. PT To achieve the long-elusive goal of easily finding information hidden in computer files, Microsoft is returning to a decade-old idea. The company is building new file organization software that will begin to form the underpinnings of the next major version of its Windows operating system. The complex data software is meant to address a conundrum as old as the computer industry itself: how to quickly find and work with a piece of information, no matter what its format, from any location. For those using Windows, this will mean easier, faster and more reliable searches for information. Replacing its antiquated file system with modern database technology should also mean a more reliable Windows that's less likely to break and easier to fix when it does, said analysts and software developers familiar with the company's plans. In the process, the plan could boost Microsoft's high-profile .Net Web services plan and pave the way to enter new markets for document management and portal software, while simultaneously dealing a blow to competitors.

update Microsoft can stop selling older operating systems, and it can even stop supporting them, but that doesn't mean that customers won't still use them. Even though Microsoft said this week that it will stop distributing Windows 98 at the end of this month, a new study shows that a substantial number of businesses, both large and small, are still using it. The study, released this week by technology consultant AssetMetrix , found that more than 80 percent of companies still have some machines using Windows 95 or Windows 98. Of those companies still using the older operating systems, an average of 39 percent of desktops were running either Windows 95 or Windows 98. "We found a significant occurrence of Windows 9x," said Steve O'Halloran, managing director for the research arm of AssetMetrix. The study looked at 372,129 PCs from 670 companies ranging in size from 10 to 49,000 employees.
