Renewable Energy Resources
What are renewable energy resources? Renewable energy resources come from the sun, wind, oceans, rivers and plants. They are the oldest, cleanest and in most cases the most efficient forms of energy humans have at their disposal. Unlike fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, they will never run out and will not pollute the environment.
Right now, only 8 percent of our total energy use comes from renewable energy resources. The other 92 percent is primarily made up of fossil and nuclear fuel sources. Fossil fuels have had damaging effects on the quality of our air, water and soil. In order for people to continue to live healthy lives we must increase the use of renewable energy sources.
The three most common natural renewable energy resources are SUN, WIND and WATER. The first and most important renewable energy is solar energy.
What is solar energy? Solar energy is energy that is produced by our sun. It is the oldest and most efficient form of renewable energy. Ancient Native American tribes like the Anasazi built their homes so that they could utilize the sun's light and warmth. They did this by building their houses within massive rock cliffs that faced to the southwest, the optimal direction for receiving sunlight. In the summer the sun is very high on the horizon, so its light didn't directly enter their homes, allowing the inside of their houses to stay very cool. But in the winter the sun is lower on the horizon and provided direct sunlight and warmth. Their homes were made out of clay, which absorbed and retained the sun's heat. This helped keep the homes warm and comfortable even in the coldest months of the winter. With an understanding of a free, non-polluting natural energy resource, the sun, these ancient people were able to keep their houses cool in the summer and warm in winter.

Fact Sheets

Nothing happens without energy. The Sun supplies the energy that powers all life on Earth. The oil, gas and coal that power human activity are in reality Solar Energy that was captured and stored millions of years ago, just as plants today continue to capture and store it. But the supply of these fossil fuels is finite. For example, in the last century, humans have consumed nearly half of all of the oil that will ever be produced. Consider this in the context of 5000 years of human history. The burning of fossil fuels degrades our environment. Approach any major city and observe the brown haze that engulfs it. We are even managing to change the climate of the Earth itself. The hidden costs are immense, including tax breaks for fossil fuel companies, increased health costs, the long-term costs of climate change, and the cost of military presence in the Persian Gulf. It is clear that human society must eventually be powered by the Renewable Energy sources, Solar and its derivatives. Why not make the switch sooner rather than later? Analysis of Renewable Portfolio Options for Hawaii

and Appendix 1: Update of Selected Cost and Performance Estimates

The purpose of this project, also known as Project 3 of the Hawaii Energy Strategy (1995), was to produce a comprehensive assessment of Hawaii's renewable energy resources (wind, solar, biomass, hydroelectric, ocean thermal energy conversion [OTEC], geothermal, and wave energy) and a long-range development strategy. The project consisted of three parts, and produced three reports:
  • Renewable Energy Resource Assessment Plan The report on Phase I summarized the activities involved in creating the resource assessment plan, including determining constraints and requirements, identifying potential project sites, analyzing existing utility infrastructure, identifying existing monitoring sites, and screening potential sites. New solar and wind monitoring sites were recommended and instrumented for collection of additional data.
  • Development of Renewable Energy Resource Supply Curves The Phase II report compiled cost and performance data on current and future renewable energy conversion systems, analyzed and reduced existing data on available resources, and presented the renewable energy resource supply curves which were developed. A computer model was developed to allow comparison of cost information on renewable resources with various alternatives.
