Clean, renewable energy A cost-effective source of power Meeting market demand reliably How wind turbines work ... For more information FPL Energy is the largest U.S. generator of wind power, with 42 wind farms currently in 15 states:
  • California Iowa Kansas Minnesota New Mexico North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania South Dakota Texas Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming
With a wind-power portfolio of more than 2,700 net megawatts, FPL Energy generated nearly 40 percent of the total wind energy in the nation in 2003.
Clean, renewable energy
Wind is a source of clean, renewable energy. This means we save on fossil fuel resources (coal, natural gas or oil), but, more importantly, we aren't faced with the additional environmental impacts associated with burning them. Wind is clean, efficient and almost always there to be tapped. An abundant, never-ending resource, it generates clean energy using the most up-to-date technologies available. Today, wind energy is the fastest-growing renewable energy resource in the world. For example:

wind energy. Introduction. World wind energy capacity has been doubling every wind energy Costs. As wind energy is not generally costcompetitive
http://www.worldenergy.org/wec-geis/publications/reports/ser/wind/wind.asp
WIND ENERGY Introduction World wind energy capacity has been doubling every three years during the last decade and growth rates in the last two years have been even faster, as shown in Figure 13.1. It is doubtful whether any other energy technology is growing, or has grown, at such a rate. Total world wind capacity at the end of 2000 was around 17 500 MW and generation from wind now approximately equates to annual consumption of electricity in Chile or Singapore. Germany, with over 6 000 MW, has the highest capacity but Denmark, with over 2 000 MW, has the highest level per capita and the production accounts for about 12% of Danish electricity.
Figure 13.1: Growth of world wind capacity The attractions of wind as a source of electricity which produces minimal quantities of greenhouse gases has led to ambitious targets for wind energy in many parts of the world. More recently, there have been several developments of offshore wind installations and many more are planned. Although offshore wind-generated electricity is generally more expensive than onshore, the resource is very large and there are few environmental impacts. Whilst wind energy is generally developed in the industrialised world for environmental reasons, it has attractions in the developing world as it can be installed quickly in areas where electricity is urgently needed. In many instances it may be a cost-effective solution if fossil fuel sources are not readily available. In addition there are many applications for wind energy in remote regions, worldwide, either for supplementing diesel power (which tends to be expensive) or for supplying farms, homes and other installations on an individual basis.

Education For Students Renewable Energy: An Overview
Wind may have been one of the first energy sources harnessed by man. For centuries, windmills have been used to pump water and operate grinding-mills. Less than 100 years ago, windmills provided a significant amount of energy consumed in rural areas. Wind is often considered an indirect form of solar energy because wind currents are created when the sun unequally heats different areas of the Earth's atmosphere. It is renewable because the wind blows. In one 24-hour period, the wind blowing across the U.S. offers almost 14 times the energy used by the entire country. The problem arises in capturing that energy and putting it to use. The potential for the commercialization of wind power in Arizona is limited because the average wind speed is between 7 and 10 miles per hour. Wind speeds above 14 m.p.h. are required before utility-grade windmills are feasible. We have a lot more information on wind energy on the site: Try our "

http://www.sustainableenergy.org/resources/technologies/wind.htm
Wind Energy Wind power is the process by which wind turbines, acting like propeller blades, turn in the moving air and convert kinetic energy in the wind into electricity. Since the beginning of history, wind power has been used as a form of energy. Millions of windmills were erected in the U.S. in the late 19 th century as a means to pump water for farms and ranches. Modern day wind turbines take advantage of major technology advances in materials, electronics and aerodynamics to provide electrical power to consumers similar to conventional power plants. Wind energy is the world's fastest growing energy source in the world. In the U.S., over 4,200 megawatts (MW) of wind power has been installed, or enough to serve 1 million average households. While ten years ago California and Hawaii were the only states with significant wind power in place; there are now utility-scale wind installations in 26 states.
Clean and Abundant Energy
As a renewable source of energy, wind power is free and abundant. While nearly all areas of the U.S. have some amount of wind potential, the best resources are found in the Great Plains, Pacific Northwest and Texas.

This brief tutorial explains how to estimate power and energy yields, of building-integral on-site solar and wind power conversion, storage, and management installations; analyzes past and new systems; and compares their cost. No suitable photos of existing building-integral installations, combining both solar and wind power, were found. Perhaps none exist, because conventional power storage devices needed for power on demand do not afford acceptable system options. For now, this illustration provides the best available means to visualize this concept. Briefly stated, PV (photovoltaic) and thermal solar panels can cover much of a building's exterior surface; including walls, windows, roofing, and skylights. PV panels (shown as light blue surfaces) can be used instead of conventional building enclosure materials, for competitive total building and power equipment life-cycle cost. Proximity to other parts of the building's electric system is not critical. However, solar heating panels (shown as dark surfaces) need to be nearer to the other components of the building heating system. They can be interspersed with PV panels as shown here. Heating system insulation, pipes, and ducts can thus be minimal.
