For information about the Wilson House, itself, email to wilsondc@worldweb.net. W oodrow W ilson H ouse The life and times of President Woodrow Wilson are captured in this National Historic Landmark. Scholar, educator, governor, statesman and the only former president to make his home in the nation's capitol, Wilson retired to the Embassy Row section of Washington in 1921. In leading the United States through World War I, as welll as working tirelessly to establish the League of Nations, Wilson expanded America's role in international af fairs and placed the country in a position of world leadership. The red brick Georgian Revival town house is rich in the legacy of Wilson's remarkable career. The house at 2340 S Street, N.W., was designed in 1915 by architect Waddy B. Wood and was purchased by the President in 1920 as a surprise for his second wife, Edith Bolling Wilson. Following a Scottish tradition, Wilson presented his wife with a small p iece of sod from the garden and the key to the front door. Here the Wilsons entertained prominent visitors, including David Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau, read books from their extensive library, enjoyed movies and often went for rides through Rock Creek Park and into the Virginia coutryside.

Wilson's prominence as the Democratic governor of a state which was normally Republican and his success in securing progressive legislation now made him a national figure in politics. By the end of 1911 he was generally recognized as one of the strongest candidates for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. His chief opponent was Champ Clark, the popular Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Democratic convention at Baltimore in June, 1912, nominated Wilson after a bitter contest, on the forty-third ballot, and in November Wilson was elected President by the greatest electoral majority ever given a presidential candidate. He received 446 votes of a total of 531; his popular vote was over 6,000,000, which was about 1,000,000 short of a majority of all votes cast. In the first two years of his administration Wilson secured the enactment of notable legislation by Congress. Some of it was secured in spite of great opposition, even from members of his own party, and the President's hand was felt in all of it. The Underwood-Simmons tariff, the federal reserve act, the Clayton antitrust act and the trade commission act were the results of this pressure on Congress. At the same time Wilson was facing a serious problem in Mexico, and before the Mexican troubles showed any signs of lessening, the outbreak of World War I added new burdens to his heavy load. The President's first wife, Ellen Axson Wilson, died a week after the war began. On December 18, 1915, he married Mrs. Edith Bolling Galt. He was reelected in 1916, receiving 277 electoral votes and a plurality of 462,905.

Served as president from 1913 to 1921 Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), led the United States through World War I and gained lasting fame as a champion of world peace and democracy. Wilson was one of the most remarkable men in American history. Before reaching the height of popularity as a world statesman, he had achieved success in two other careers. First, as a scholar, teacher, and university president, he greatly influenced the course of education. Then, as a political leader, he brought successful legislative reforms to state and national government. Wilson would have won a place in history even if he had been active in only one of his three careers.
Wilson was first of all a scholar. Even his physical appearance was like the popular idea of a scholar. He was thin, of medium height, and wore glasses. His high forehead, firm mouth, and jutting jaw all gave signs of thoughtfulness and strength. He was also a strong leader as a teacher, university president, and statesman.
His character
Wilson was a man of firm beliefs. When he made up his mind or felt his principles were at stake, he could be a difficult opponent. In his letters, he often said he was not able to establish close friendships. But in truth, he had a great capacity for warm friendship. His energy, magnetic personality, and high ideals won for him the loyalty of many friends and political supporters.

WILSON, WOODROW
, twenty-eighth president of the United States and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (1919). Born in Staunton, Virginia, Wilson received the Ph.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1886. As a college professor, he was one of the founders of the discipline of political science in the United States and made significant contributions to the fields of comparative government and administration. Several texts he wrote are regarded as classics. He was also a prolific academic and popular historian. As president of Princeton, he transformed a venerable college into a world-class university, but conflicts over the reorganization of the social life of undergraduates and control of the graduate school caused him to resign in October 1910. Meanwhile, Wilson had accepted the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey. After his election in November 1910, he pushed through measures that put the state in the forefront of progressive reform. This success catapulted him into national prominence and led to his election as president on the Democratic ticket in 1912. Wilson transformed the presidency into the institution we know today by his strong leadership in foreign affairs, his command of public opinion, and his leadership of his party in Congress. Under his aegis, Congress from 1913 to 1916 enacted the most coherent, constructive, and comprehensive program to that time. It included measures for banking reorganization and control through the Federal Reserve System, tariff reduction, federal oversight of business, support of labor organizations, and federal aid to education and agriculture. In foreign affairs during his first term, Wilson acted most notably as an anti-imperialist and advocate of human rights. He defended and protected the Mexican Revolution begun in 1910, sought to protect the infant Chinese republic against Japanese aggression, and brought home rule to the Philippine Islands and Puerto Rico.

And to show that this is no empty boasting for the present occasion, but real tangible fact, you have only to consider the power which our city possesses and which has been won by those very qualities which I have mentioned. February 2004 Wilson focused his campaign for president on a platform he called New Freedom. New Freedom promoted states’ rights and individualism. During his first term, Wilson signed three major pieces of legislation:
    • The Underwood Act lowered tariffs but also established the federal income tax. The Federal Reserve Act set up 12 federal banks across the nation and addressed problems with the money supply. The Federal Trade Commission was created to deal with unfair business practices.
During his first term, Wilson also made major strides in labor laws. He signed laws prohibiting child labor and limiting railroad workers to an eight-hour workday.
