Wildlife Photography: Backyard Basics for the Novice
By Deb Simpson I have no intention of telling you that your camera equipment must meet certain professional standards before you can take pleasing wildlife pictures in your backyard habitat. If your interests in photography are beyond that of a novice, see equipment for beginning nature photographers , and the Nature Photography Guide . The following article is for gardeners with an interest in recording events and wildlife in their garden using existing equipment, or with a minimum expenditure since most of us would rather spend money on plants and feeders than anything else. C ontradictory to the aforementioned articles, I'd never suggest that an auto-focus lens is a bad idea, since my own ability to get an in-focus image has waned with my eyesight. I'd never suggest that you fool around with a non-automatic system, unless your dedication goes beyond the level of a novice it's my opinion that during the process of fumbling about with equipment, exposure and focus, the moment is lost.

Wildlife Photography and Adventure Travel
By
My first real adventure trip was a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. I was completely hooked. I decided that I was going to take some sort of adventure trip as often as possible. Over the years my trips have gravitated towards wildlife photography. Wildlife photography and adventure travel are actually a good combination. It turns out that to photograph a lot of wildlife you need to travel to remote locations. My travels have taken me across both the Arctic circle and the Antarctic circle. As a child my family was not well off. We weren't poor but we didn't have a lot of extra money. As a result most of our family vacations were spent camping. Even when we drove to California we spent each night at a different campsite. We did not stay in hotels and we never flew anywhere. I still enjoy camping, although I do it in a trailer now instead of a tent. However, I don't mind roughing it. Which is a good thing because the accommodations you stay in to get close to wildlife are not always good and sometimes they are downright bad. I have always loved animals so it is not surprising that one of my hobbies has turned out to be wildlife photography. As I child I would feed anything I could coax close enough. Usually chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, and deer. Who am I kidding, I will still feed anything I can coax close enough. Unfortunately my dogs make sure I don't get much of a chance on my camping trips anymore.

I watched him tear down the tree between us
As a wildlife photographer in India, being charged by a tiger sometime in your life is almost a certainty Next morning when we went back to the same spot and looked at the ditch I had relied on so much, I almost did a back flip and died. I think I was very lucky I'd come across an extremely hungry elephant more intent on his meal than on a man at his feet flashing light every now and then. I remember hoping he thought the flash was lightning but why would lightning flash from the ground!! I guess you do have to be a little nutty in the head to be a wildlife photographer.
Nutty but still keep your wits around you to work your way around problems and get yourself out of dangerous situations which could turn ugly very suddenly. I have been charged and chased by elephants on fourteen different occasions, thrice by tigers and once even had the pleasure of sitting on an elephant charging a tiger. If these things aren't for you, don't even think of getting into wildlife photography.

The Camera System
Lens Basics Exposure Basics Film Types The Camera System The camera system consists of two obvious components, the camera body, and the lens. A camera body simply controls the speed of the shutter, while a lens determines the amount of light that falls on the film. A few quick words about the camera body. There are all types of cameras on the market right now. Some are simple, and some are so advanced that you only need to hit the button. Some even have automatic composition modes. I don't know how I feel about that! The one thing that all cameras have in common is they are nothing but light proof boxes that hold film. Unless of course you shoot digital, then your camera body plays a little more important role. But the idea is the same. I think the most important key to any camera system is to choose one that you are comfortable with. Don't let a salesperson promise you great results with the most expensive camera and lens set up. This simply will not happen. I am a firm believer that the equipment doesn't take great pictures, only the person controlling it. A camera will not give you great results on it's own, no matter how expensive it is. Like a sports car, you can't expect to have an exhilarating ride if you don't know how to drive! Great results come only from using your camera properly, and exercising good photo techniques.

The top wildlife photograph of the year - a picture of a gorilla in a zoo. Is this wildlife? Strictly speaking, the answer is no (though some might argue it should be). But in this case, captivity is the essence of the composition. It is so imaginatively portrayed, so beautifully crafted that it has warranted the highest accolade in wildlife photography. Layers The best of images are multi-layered, and this is no exception. It is a harmonious frame, with proportionate light and shade. More than this, it has used the light to make a statement. Low but intense illumination leads the eye first to the solemn-looking gorilla in the foreground, and as the eye wanders, one discovers the ghost-like figure of the boy looking on from the shadows. Agonising limbo It is unfair to attribute grave moral statements regarding the captivity of wild animals to such a moment in time. Seconds after the shutter was released, the boy may well have smiled and, who knows, may grow to be a pioneer for conservation, having been spellbound by this early brush with the majesty of the natural world. The gorilla may be content in a comfortable enclosure. But for this moment at least, the two are caught in an agonising limbo - the gorilla resigned and looking away, the boy wistful and earnest. Indeed, even the category of 'captive' is ambiguous, with the boy apparently incarcerated in gloom.
