In an e-mail exchange following the Conversations with History interview with Dr. Myers, Harry Kreisler asked about the influence of Dr. Myers's photographic work on his later career as an environmental scientist. His reply follows: 12th March 1999 Dear Harry, I am glad you like the wildlife photos. You've asked me to elaborate on my photography: At the same time, I got to appreciate that a lion does not live in isolation. It is always, at every moment of its existence, a lion in conjunction with zebras and leopards and crocodiles and giraffes and, increasingly, humans who encroach onto the zebras' habitat. Looking at wildlife through a camera lens enables one, encourages one, and even obliges one to see things as the Ancient Greeks urged us to view our world: to see things steadily and to see them whole. Regards,
Norman Myers To the photographs [jpg thumbnails total ~90k] See also the Conversations with History interview with Dr. Myers

So you want to be a pro wildlife photographer? I get quite a regular flow of enquiries from young people wanting to get into the business. Generally I am asked ‘Can you really make a living out of this?’ A short answer is yes, but it is very difficult and certainly getting harder year by year. All the better stock agencies are flooded with wildlife images, and many of the ever increasing number of photographers are selling their pictures direct to publishers as well. It certainly is tough out there! Just being able to take a good picture is not enough – a lot of determination and a strong business sense are equally important if you are going to make it. However I believe that it is essential that young creative talent does enter the profession. Without new input and ideas the entire genre of wildlife photography could easily stagnate into a constant repetition of the old tried and trusted techniques.
The following email interview was conducted by Jennifer Thomas, a young photography and advertising student at The Atlanta College of Art. I found her questions very pertinent. Jennifer asked many of the FAQ’s relevant to how on earth a person can make wildlife photography a career. The interview was part of Jennifer’s course – she told me afterwards that she received an ‘A’. I have no doubt this was due to the quality of her questions rather than my answers!

Texas Wildlife Photography
View pictures of real Texas wildlife, along with tips on photographing them "On most weekends and holidays, Wildlife Photographer, Jeff Heinatz, pursues his passion. He goes to Davis Mountains State Park, Big Bend National Park, Balmorhea State Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park or one of dozens of ranches in the Davis Mountains and Glass Mountains. With his Minolta cameras, 500-millimeter lens and mess of animal calls, he goes into the wilderness, and almost always returns with photographic proof of his exotic adventures." The Desert Big Horn Sheep, pictured here, is just one example of his talent. "He's been literally face to face with animals some people probably don't realize exist just 200 miles from San Angelo. Like black bears." "Black bears are making a comeback here," he said. "Most try to avoid people, but I've had them walk up to me and sniff nose to nose. Other animals such as badgers, coyotes, desert mule deer, elk, fox, golden eagles, hawks, javelina, mountain lions, owls, porcupines, roadrunners and others are all native to the Big Bend area of Texas. I have been extremely fortunate in obtaining many once in a life time photographs," some of which are featured on the

They require great intuitive understanding and, in some cases, quite a bit of knowledge on the behavior of these special subjects. The speed of the camera equipment combined with the quick perception of the photographer are additional requirements for this type of subject. The photographer often needs to have a lot of patience. And then it's suddenly time to take action: the camera must work perfectly so that the frame and the action can be brought into balance, usually within split seconds. The reward is fascinating, lively pictures which portray an exciting world of images of immeasurable diversity.
Location: from the armchair to an iceberg You don't need to search long in order to find worthwhile motifs. Pets are already close at hand. Meadows and fields close to home offer further possibilities, as does a Sunday visit to the zoo. Wildlife photos are also brought back from trips abroad. For some photography enthusiasts, special photography safaris are just as much of a highlight as expeditions to remote regions. A distinction can be made between wildlife photos taken with conventional equipment and those captured using very long telephoto focal lengths and fast camera equipment. The aesthetic value of wildlife photography can be enhanced by framing and composition. However, it can also serve as documentation which is, unfortunately, increasingly laden with negative environmental aspects.
