Animal Photography
Take Your Best Shot
But Only with a Camera!
of Allan/The Animal Photographers If you're like most photography enthusiasts, you're fond of taking pictures of animals domestic, as well as wild whenever you get the chance. If you have a fondness for them like we do, having devoted more than 20 years to photographing animals almost exclusively, you'll limit your "shooting" to the camera. If you're lucky enough to share your home with a dog or cat, no doubt you've turned your camera in their direction while they scamper or sleep. Perhaps your photo success with your pet/companion has varied. Here are some useful tips that we can share based on our experience creating both formal (portrait) and candid (environmental) photographs of animals. What can I do to capture the texture of fur? Cross- or side-lighting helps bring out the texture of animal fur. To be even more specific, we prefer about a one-stop difference between our main light source (this could be the sun or a flash) which is lighting our subject from the side, and our fill light, which is positioned near the camera and aimed directly at the subject. You can achieve this 2:1 side-to-front, main-to-fill ration placing your lights at appropriate distances.

Getting Started in Wildlife Photography
"Things I would have done, if I knew what I know now" print article I am often asked by young men and women in high school and college "What do I need to do to get into wildlife & nature photography?" Whether you would like to photograph wildlife & nature as a lifelong profession or as a serious amateur, there a few "qualities" you must possess:
Passion!
If you love observing and photographing wildlife in their natural habitat and you get a rush every time you are able to share a few special moments with your subject, then you have something no one can ever take away from you. Passion! Hold on to it as few people are lucky enough to experience it in life or in their photography.
Ability to Set and Achieve Your Goals Once you learn to set short-term and long-term goals AND more importantly, know how good it feels to reach your goals, nothing will be able to stop you!
Now What?

Making a living out of wildlife photography. I must start by saying that making a living out of wildlife photography can be very difficult.
http://www.mcdcwain.freeserve.co.uk/living.htm
African Wildlife Photography By Michael Wain (UK) Home Page Buy Fine Art Prints Buy Greeting Cards Buy Gift Sets ... Comments Making a living out of Wildlife Photography I must start by saying that making a living out of wildlife photography can be very difficult. Most professional photographers find they need to take on other duties to make a decent living. There are many ways in which you can make a living though. You will find many photographers take tours and workshops, they also write articles and books. Selling photos is only part off their work. People often ask me, what is the best way to peruse a career in wildlife photography? The best bit of advice I can give is to practice and get others to critique your work then practice some more. Joining your local photography club is one of the best places to learn about photography. You will be in a position to exchange information and ideas. A good place to practice is your local zoo or nature park. The first thing to do is to build up a portfolio of your best, original work, about a 1000 images is a good starting point. The images need to be correctly composed, sharp and exposure must be spot on. Only then will you be in a position to sell you photos to a stock agency. If they accept your work they will expect a steady flow of images from you on a regular basis. This is the difficult bit, as it becomes time consuming and expensive. Once you have been accepted, don't expect money to flow in, at least for the first couple of years anyway. It has been said that you can expect on average about $1 per photo per year from a stock agency, therefore 1000 images won't begin to cover your expenses.
