The truth about cats and wildlife
Introduction Against cats In defense of cats References
Introduction
Rightly or wrongly, environmental groups and councils have increasingly called for the confinement of cats to prevent their predation on birds and other wildlife. Cats do impact on wildlife, like humans they kill to eat, but there has been a great deal of misinformation and propaganda about the true harm they do. This debate has become so heated at times, fueled by a minority of vocal cat haters who often have the ear of government, that people have lost sight of the fact that it is humans themselves who are the real culprits. Massive, ongoing and largely irreversible damage to the environment by human activity is the main reason for the loss of wildlife, the impact of cats being infinitesimal in comparison. In fact if given a choice, cats mainly prey on pest species such as rodents and rabbits as they have done for millennia, with the full endorsement of humans. It’s almost as though history is repeating itself. Cats through the ages have been cruelly persecuted and almost wiped out at times for various reasons, most notably during the Middle Ages when they became all but extinct in Europe due to suspicion and fear that they were witches in disguise. The result was that rats were able to proliferate and bubonic plague or Black Death, which is carried by the rat flea, killed one third of the known human population. It is worth noting that the plague bacillus is still with us today, still present in many countries including Australia. Rodents also transmit other diseases that are potentially devastating to humans, including hanta virus, which makes cyclic reappearances in various parts of the world whenever carrier rodent numbers build up.

Birds, bees, butterflies and wild flowers are rapidly disappearing from our countryside. Some farmers have been tempted by Government policies into uprooting hedges, abandoning stubbles, and using ever more effective insecticides and herbicides. Intensive farming has done untold damage to our countryside and wildlife. The wildflowers of our youth have disappeared, and with them the seeds and insects on which the birds depend. The ploughing of winter stubbles has deprived the birds of vital food. Rough headlands and unsprayed pastures are a thing of the past. This is the reason why gardening for wildlife, wild flowers, nature and conservation is so important and even vital for some species Our gardens have become the chief refuge for the wildlife that can adapt. Owls, foxes and even badgers have moved into the towns. It is up to us to provide them with their basic needs. Anyone with a garden, a field or an orchard, however large or small, can come to the rescue by caring for it in a wildlife-friendly way. However all credit is due to those who do farm their land in an environmently acceptable manner and go to great lengths to make sure that their wildlife and wild flowers thrive.

Global warming affects caribou and muskoxen. Scientists study these animals because:
Most large Arctic mammals are endangered. Arctic species first show effects of global warming. Climate change is easier to measure in Greenland.
Many songbirds need their habitats to be a certain temperature, so they are moving north to find cooler places to live. They are changing where they spend their time. The result? Some states will no longer welcome their symbolic state bird anymore. Will your state bird stop visiting your state? Get the Scoop on Global Warming

    Wildlife Art Prints
    By Ann Seward
Watercolour studies of wildlife art, as seen through the eyes of Ann Seward are truly remarkable. Whilst appearing so lifelike in every detail, they each project the very essence of the animal they portray. Whether a fox-cub, or a mature dog fox; a leveret or an adult jack hare; each study captures the very nature of our secret countryside dwellers.
Hare Study The attention to detail is unquestionable, and her technique of layering thousands of washes gives a seemingly tactile depth to the coat: this together with her ability to capture the very essence of the eye and expression, makes the animal appear truly alive. Her innate ability of perception and of portraying these individual characteristics is unequivocal, and has ensured her reputation as one of the foremost animal portraitists in the United Kingdom.
    Fox Study
To add further interest to some studies Ann has added pencil remarques: these enhance the image, whilst providing an insight into the animals' natural lifestyles and movements.

Welcome , while you are here, I would like to tell you about myself. I enjoy taxidermy to a passion, and have been leaning towards, custom taxidermy, with artistic merit to it. I have been attending and participating in taxidermy competitions and seminars. I am constantly working to improve my methods and skills. Which have enabled me to win some nice awards, and make me want to learn and do more artistic taxidermy work. I have loved taxidermy since I was about 10 years old, I grew up hunting and trapping. My father took me hunting at a very young age, and some times wound up caring me out of the woods. He got me my very first taxidermy specimen, with permission from a dairy farmer, he brought me home a barn pigeon. When you leave your trophy with me, it will be given the utmost care. When you return to pick it up, it will have the natural life like look, necessary to bring your trophy too life.

Silviculture primarily affects wildlife habitat by changing the composition and structure of the vegetation. This workshop, through a combination of classroom presentations and field trips, will examine those components of wildlife habitat that foresters can alter through silviculture. We will achieve our objectives by first identifying the important wildlife habitat features common to northern hardwoods. The program will subsequently compare even- and uneven-aged silviculture with respect to differences in their effects on wildlife habitat conditions. The integration of wildlife and wildlife habitat considerations into sustainable forestry programs will be addressed throughout the workshop. Workshop Location: Huntington Wildlife Forest, Newcomb, NY
