Book Description Customer Reviews I was under the impression that this book would provide the information I needed to cultivate these plants on some scale. I was very disappointed. There is no way that you could reliably produce these plants with the information provided in this book. There are much better books out there for that purpose. If you are a novice, homegardener wanting to learn about wildflowers and grow a few in your backyard, this book would be okay for you. But if you are knowledgeable on the topic already, I think you will be disappointed. This is a wonderful book about the culture and propagation of North American native flowers. The author clearly knows his stuff and communicates it well. The only weakness is the limited and low quality photography (lots of depth of field problems) which, I gather is not the author's work, but came from a wildflower society. There really are far too few pictures considering the wide variety of plants. Don't plan on being able to tell which of the diverse Eupatoriums or Asters you want to plant by looking at their pictures.HOWEVER, this book would be worth it without pictures, just for the information. Go buy the book and then write the pubisher a note saying the illustration is beneath the writing....just like I just did.

The prospect of gardening on a steeply sloping site is often looked on with fear and trembling but, with imaginative use, changes in level can greatly enhance the beauty and interest of a garden. Many older or disabled people are daunted by the prospect of coping with what seems like a mountainside outside their back door. Here we consider what is necessary to enhance and improve a sloping site. Deciding what is possible Before any other considerations, it is important to decide what is really wanted from the garden. For instance, do you simply want low maintenance cover for their awkward slope or to use the garden in a more intensive way? Your priorities could be:
  • that the garden be accessible from a wheelchair
  • that there is a system of low gradient paths through the garden
  • a flat area for a small glasshouse
  • shelter and screening from neighbours
  • cordon and espalier fruit trees
  • space for potting up and sowing seeds
  • areas for outdoor relaxation
  • space for an accessible washing line
Further considerations might include the needs of others who use the garden, such as the provision of a flat play area for children. Once these priorities are established, they can help to shape the design - within the limitations of your site and budget.

Most indigenous British wild flowers are much smaller than cultivated flowers are good for wildlife conservation, especially for threatened songbirds. Many depend on wild flower seeds for their basic nutrition. suit any size garden - a wildflower border can be a square metre, or much larger. germinate easily. no compost or fertiliser is needed. In fact these plants do much better in very poor soils.
Borders and Meadows There are two ways of establishing a wildflower border or meadow:
  • Remove the turf, and sow wildflower packets of seeds on the soil. This method is cheap but you will need to water until established and the range of plants that survive is unpredictable.

    Evolution of Consciousness

Roger tells us that living in the Antarctic taught him to "look at each leaf as if on the day of creation." Painting sunlit glaciers also taught him to be a flower painter as the flow of light in a glacier is as evanescent as the play of light on the ever changing petals of a flower. As he puts it, "You must go for the essential line and capture the rhythmic spirit of the thing as best you can." We are in a time when the nearby wild fields have been plowed under for shopping malls and residences, so that the former order that a gardener sought to bring to one's private estate has been pre-empted by a desire to re-create the formerly ubiquitous wild state of nature, small arks of nature close to one's living quarters. I liked him right away when I read him some fifteen years ago and came upon this short paragraph. [page 8] I never use weed- or insectkillers and poisonous sprays if I can possibly avoid it because, as a naturalist, I'm only too alive to the damage carried up the food chain. Anyhow, I rather like creepy-crawlies for their own sakes and should be sorry to find no room for them on my ark. About the same time in my life, the mid-eighties of the 20

    Trees, hedges, shrubs and flowers
to attract wildlife to your garden
Planting flowers, trees and shrubs in your garden helps to redress the balance caused by disappearing woods, hedgerows and farmland. As these disappear, British animals also disappear because their natural food and habitat is destroyed. Even if your garden is small or in a city it can prove a haven and lifeline for wildlife. Allowing certain species of native wild flowers a place in your garden can be beneficial to wildlife and beautiful to behold.
    Trees
Native British trees including hawthorn and oak are valuable to insects, birds and other animals as they provide shelter and food. Introduced species offer far less to our native creatures. Oak trees support the most insects, but are too large for most gardens. Willow, birch or hawthorn are good alternatives. Trees such as beech, ash and hazel also produce seeds or fruit. The fruit of apple trees is a valuable source of food for many birds in autumn or winter.

Birds, bees, butterflies and wild flowers are rapidly disappearing from our countryside. Some farmers have been tempted by Government policies into uprooting hedges, abandoning stubbles, and using ever more effective insecticides and herbicides. Intensive farming has done untold damage to our countryside and wildlife. The wildflowers of our youth have disappeared, and with them the seeds and insects on which the birds depend. The ploughing of winter stubbles has deprived the birds of vital food. Rough headlands and unsprayed pastures are a thing of the past. This is the reason why gardening for wildlife, wild flowers, nature and conservation is so important and even vital for some species Our gardens have become the chief refuge for the wildlife that can adapt. Owls, foxes and even badgers have moved into the towns. It is up to us to provide them with their basic needs. Anyone with a garden, a field or an orchard, however large or small, can come to the rescue by caring for it in a wildlife-friendly way. However all credit is due to those who do farm their land in an environmently acceptable manner and go to great lengths to make sure that their wildlife and wild flowers thrive.

Where have all the flowers gone?
More and more people are growing up without ever having the chance to see the wildflowers which older generations once took for granted. In fact, most of the British wild plants that have become locally extinct have done so in the last 40 years, well within living memory. There are many reasons - changes in the way we farm, the disappearance of 'waste' ground, woodland, hedgerows and roadside verges, even changes in the way we garden. Threats to wildflowers One of the major threats to wildflowers is the change in the way we farm. The demand for low cost food means that farmers are under pressure to farm as cost-effectively as possible. This means intensive use of the land, with bigger fields, fewer hedges, less 'wild' places, and more effective control of weeds - which in fact are of often wildflowers. In the past, an important part of the yearly farming cycle was the use of hay meadows. Fields of grasses and other plants were left to grow throughout the summer, and then cut and dried late in the season as winter food for livestock. Today, the use of artificial feedstuffs has meant less use of hay and fewer meadows .We lose up to 10% of our hay meadows every year. Nowadays, even the gardens of our homes are used differently. Cottage gardens were once crammed with plants chosen not just for decoration, but for their ability to provide medicines, food, dyes or nectar for honey.
