Your flower gardening guide
DO YOU ENJOY FLOWER GARDENING?
Are you looking to create a stunning backyard garden? Searching for distinctive plants and information on how to grow them in your flower garden? You'll find plenty of garden design ideas and growing tips right here. TO GET STARTED ON YOUR FLOWER GARDEN:
  • you need knowledge -
  • and you have to do some spadework.
For the spadework, you're on your own ;-), but I have designed these pages to share insider knowlege. The gardening tips you'll find here can help take the guesswork out of planning and planting your garden. MY OWN GARDENING BACKGROUND I've gardened big and I've gardened small. These days, I garden with flowering perennials and lots of ornamental grasses on a 10-acre country property with many different garden areas. As a garden writer, photographer and lecturer, I'm passionate about plants and landscape design. I favor a contemporary, easy-care, meadow-like garden style that works with nature, rather than fighting it. In my garden, I try out new perennials and other ornamental plants to find the ones with the best, longest-blooming flowers and attractive presence in the garden all season long. I have also experimented with different flower gardening and landscaping techniques, and share tips here about what really works in the garden.

For flowers galore
plant a wild flower prairie garden
These days, adventurous gardeners are replacing lawns with backyard wild flower prairie gardens. It’s quite a change from the manicured lawn, and sometimes the neighbors raise their eyebrows, but prairie gardening with native North American wild flowers is growing in popularity. This style of gardening is sometimes called "prairie garden movement". It's very naturalistic and provides great backyard habitat for insects and birds. (Some people seem to have the idea that insects are all bad. Remember: they are actually a vital part of the natural scheme of things as plant pollinators and food for birds.) WHAT IS A WILD FLOWER PRAIRIE?
Prairie is the French word for meadow - simply meaning a plant community of flowering perennials and grasses growing together. Prairie landscapes are natural to mid- western regions of North America, but today very little original prairie remains. Fortunately, restoration projects are underway in many regions. If you’re interested in planting a wild flower meadow or prairie to replace a strip of lawn or a flowerbed in your backyard, it’s easist to start out with young container-grown plants, which bloom much sooner than a meadow from seed.

26. THE WILD FLOWER GARDEN
IN a rational system of flower gardening one of the first things to do is to get a clear idea of the aim of the wild Garden. When I began to plead the cause
http://www.lovetoknow.com/Landscaping/wild-flower-garden.htm
THE WILD FLOWER GARDEN
O universal Mother, who dost keep
From everlasting thy foundations deep,
Eldest of things, Great Earth, I sing of thee. The term "Wild Garden," is applied to the placing of perfectly hardy exotic plants in places where they will take care of themselves. It has nothing to do with the "wilderness," though it may be carried out in it. It does not necessarily mean the picturesque garden, for a garden may be picturesque and yet in every part the result of ceaseless care. What it does mean is best explained by the winter Aconite flowering under a grove of naked trees in February; by the Snowflake abundant in meadows by the Thames; and by the Apennine Anemone staining an English grove blue. Multiply these instances by adding many different plants and hardy climbers from countries as cold as our own, or colder, and one may get some idea of the wild garden. Some have thought of it as a garden allowed to run wild, or with annuals sown promiscuously, whereas it does not meddle with the flower garden proper at all. I wish the idea to be kept distinct from the various important phases of hardy plant growth in groups, beds, and borders, in which good culture may produce many happy effects; from the rock garden or borders reserved for choice hardy flowers; from growing hardy plants of fine form; the ordinary type of spring garden. In the smaller class of gardens there may be little room for the wild garden, but in the larger gardens, where there is often ample room on the outer fringes of the lawn, in grove, park, copse, or by woodland walks or drives, new and beautiful effects may be created by its means.

28. High Altitude Gardening - Flower Gardening
We have so many wild flowers that I have not planted any flower gardens. In these gardens, I plan to use wild flowers and other high altitude plants.
http://home.earthlink.net/~tillerbee/FlowerGardening/flowerGardening.html
We have so many wild flowers that I have not planted any flower gardens. To me, cultivated flowers such as marigolds, zinnia, cleome, canna, and daisies that I grew in my eastern gardens do not seem appropriate to a mountain landscape. However, in 2000 I started two flower gardens - a rock garden and a xeriscape garden - that I believe will be harmonious with our natural setting. In these gardens, I plan to use wild flowers and other high altitude plants. I expect these gardens to take four or five years to complete and will update this page with my progress. click on an image for a larger view in another window Rock Garden Living in the rocky Mountains, we have rocks of all sizes and shapes. What better place to create a rock garden? After researching alpine gardening techniques and plants, I have started my rock garden. Click here for some links that I found to be useful for creating a rock garden. Behind our house, the land continues to rise towards a crest on our north east property corner. A rocky area was cut into for the house. Not many plants grew on this cut and 17 years after the house was built, the disturbed area had mosses growing but very few wild flowers or grasses. Moreover, the graders pushed excess subsoil into a mound right behind where our hot tub is located, obstructing our view to the undisturbed rocks and the pine forest beyond. 2000 Progress This first picture is a view of the site for my rock garden from a second story balcony on our house. The area in the middle shows the subsoil mound.

In an effort to show how native species are important in their native places, the charity Plantlife held a vote to choose flowers to represent counties. Devon got the primrose, while the dog rose was voted tops in Hampshire. Meanwhile, the pasque flower has shared its charms between Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. For the full list, see www.plantlife.org.uk Plantlife also held a poll to find the nation's favourite flower. You won't need three guesses... the bluebell! But its study reveals all is not well in the world of this most popular of native plants. In fact, the bigger, paler, coarser-leafed Spanish bluebell or its hybrid have invaded one in six of our native bluebell woods. Does it matter? Actually, yes. The UK has half the world's population of our native bluebell, and has a duty to preserve it. As gardeners, we can help: if you live in the countryside or near native bluebell populations, avoid planting the Spanish or hybrid types. If you want to remove them from your garden, follow Plantlife's advice: dig up plants with leaves intact, then leave in the sun to dry out and die; this may take a month. Only compost once bulbs are dead. The Rake is risking disinheritance for ripping up bluebells from his aged mother's garden, so the least the rest of you can do is join in.
