Home Contact Understanding the landscape Services we offer ... Sustainability Wild Flower Gardening Gardening has become more and more popular in recent times; people are now spending more time and more money on their gardens and in an increasing number of ways than ever before. The last decade has seen an increase in the number of people who have taken up wild flower gardening. Wild flower gardening has probably been most popular with those who have a strong interest in the environment and conservation, and are most likely keen gardeners as well. This style of gardening is not for the faint hearted! To be successful in the wild garden you need to have some basic plant knowledge, and it would help to understanding of the natural environment. The chances are that if your wild about your garden then you will be out there often doing things that please you and benefit your garden, one and the same thing really! Wild gardens are not low maintenance! Of course you could sow and plant a wild garden and leave it but it would not be long before scrub weeds dominated and the garden was gone! As I said ‘not low maintenance’ just different from the more formal gardens that we are more familiar with. Just how far you go with the practical management of your garden depends on the kind of garden you create and the time and effort that you can afford to give to it.

Wildflowers and the gardener Native wild flowers can be included in many planting schemes as a way of promoting biodiversity and linking gardens to the wider countryside. Plants must not be removed from the wild but should be obtained as seeds, bulbs or growing plants from reputable suppliers. The RHS offers advice on establishing and managing wild flowers in gardens. It is important that authentic native stock of wild flowers is used, especially where large scale plantings are being undertaken. To view these documents you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Making Hay HOME Published in Organic Gardening Magazine- September 2003 It is early September and I am lying on my back listening to the twitter of young swallows as they swoop down around me to catch tiny insects. Above me the sun is slipping between small white clouds. On either side I can see a haze of mauve – field scabious still in full flower with small tortoiseshell butterflies jostling for a space to drink the sweet nectar. Am I in the Yorkshire dales or somewhere in the Cotswolds perhaps? Well actually I am in my back garden, where the summer meadow needs cutting and the swallows will soon be abandoning me for the warmer climate of Africa. In the meantime however I can take advantage of the late summer sun and the wildflowers still in full bloom, and imagine I am in the countryside forty years ago. Wildflower meadows have become so popular over the last ten years that every other garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in May of last year had something approximating a meadow or at least long wild grass ‘for wildlife’. It is heartening to see this trend coupled with a greater concern amongst the garden designers for our native wildlife, and the garden meadow is now appreciated for its natural relaxed beauty as well as its value to butterflies and other creatures. Sadly, it is time to cut all my summer meadows. I leave them until September to allow the field scabious and greater knapweed to flower into the early autumn. Traditionally hay meadows are cut at the end of June, but in a garden situation this really is too early unless you need the space for summer picnics. But September is also the ideal time to start a new meadow from scratch.

The Mixtures Cottage Garden Mixture WFM
    Annuals, Biennials and Perennials
    Approx weight 3 grammes
Sow 1-2 grammes per sq metre
    Sow April to May
An interesting combination of colourful, well known cultivated flowers, wild flowers and herbs.
The mixture contains plants of mixed height and flowering periods intended to create a permanent ornamental bed. The combination of plants is typical of what would have been growing in a Victorian cottager's garden. After the first year, the annual and biennial flowers will have to be re-introduced into the bed each year to ensure that a succession of the species is maintained. It is possible to let the annuals and biennials go to seed, lift them when they have died back and shake them over the area to distribute the seed, remove all grass and weed from the area, then lightly rake the area.
    Species include :-
Cultivated flowers; Aster, Cornflower, Daisy, Goldenrod, Helineum, Hollyhock, Honesty, Larkspur, Love-in-a-mist, Mignonette, Poppy, Sweet-rocket, Sweet-william and Valerian red.
Wild flowers; Campion, Cornflower wild, Cowslip, Oxeye Daisy, Forget-me-not field, Foxglove, Jacobs-ladder, Mallow, Mullein, Wild Pansy, Wild Poppy, Welsh Poppy, Purple-loosestrife, Ragged Robin and Vipers-bugloss

    or are they just weeds?
Wild flower gardens are increasing in popularity as gardeners in general are more in tune with nature. Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh with television programmes such as Charlie's Wildlife Gardens, Ground Force, Gardeners' World and Charlie's Garden Army actively encourage gardeners to attract wildlife to their gardens and to grow wild flowers. As the countryside changes and diminishes many of us like to create a miniature countryside in our own gardens. Click on the photographs to enlarge honeysuckle foxglove red campion celandine Many wild flowers have decided to make a home in my garden and I leave some of them, uproot some and encourage others. Wild flowers that have just 'appeared' in my garden that I consider worthy of a place include honeysuckle, foxglove, red campion, lesser celandine, herb robert and forget me not. I have bought others, including primrose and lady's smock. Lady's smock can attract caterpillars of green veined white and orange tip butterflies. herb robert forget me not

Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA
A surprisingly broad palette of woody plants can be used to enhance but not overwhelm any garden located on a small property. Horticulturist Richard Stomberg will discuss trees and shrubs on the small end of the plant spectrum that have interesting foliage, flowers, overall form, and the ability to grow in less-than-ideal soils and spaces. This program will also get you thinking about techniques of espalier, trellis, and pruning to create new forms from traditional plantings. The evening lecture will be followed by a weekend visit to a model garden in an urban setting, with additional information about choice native species and planting and maintenance techniques. Co-sponsored with the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

This page is only a beginning. The accompanying photograph shows a few of the wild flowers that grow on our property. We have asters, wild rose, penstemon, wild geranium, hare bells, bed straw, pasque flowers, fairy trumpets, and miners candles, to name but a few. (A note about the vase of flowers: These flowers were picked on my own property in a year where each was abundant. Please do not pick rare or endangered wildflowers, how would they reseed themselves if you do?) In wetter summers, our meadows are so densely populated with wild flowers, I find it difficult to walk through the meadows without stepping on any of them. I have just started identifying and photographing our flowers. Therefore, this page will be completed over time. click on an image for a larger view in another window

GardeningWild aim to encourage gardeners to attract native wildlife into their gardens and see what an exciting range of plants and animals we have within the British Isles, by creating habitats and food sources.
The natural habitats for flora and fauna have decreased substantially with industrialisation of the countryside. By encouraging gardeners to bring native species into the garden it increases the habitats and food sources and so wildlife populations, but as important, it creates interest in the plight of our native wildlife.
GardeningWild aim to supply gardeners with all their needs to fulfil this objective, from friendly advice, to seeds, plants and accessories, we can help you turn your garden wild
