Endangered Status of the African Wild Dog The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is South Africa’s most endangered carnivore. It is estimated that fewer than 400 free-ranging wild dogs occur in South Africa – the large majority of which occur in the Kruger National Park. However, a recent census indicated that the Kruger wild dog population is less than half what it was in 1995, highlighting the need to set up further populations of wild dogs throughout the country. Home Some Interesting Facts About Wild Dogs
Description
Wild dogs are slim, long-legged animals about the size of an Alsatian dog. Their short, coarse coats depict a combination of tan, black and white blotches that are unique to each individual – much like a zebra’s stripes, a dolphin’s dorsal fin, or human fingerprints. These pictures of the left-hand sides of three males from the Kruger National Park clearly show the variation in coat patterns among individuals. This dappled appearance explains their scientific name, Lycaon pictus, which means “painted wolf-like animal”. Huge round ears contribute to their acute sense of hearing, and white-tipped tails provide a means of maintaining visual contact with each other. While the African wild dog is undeniably dog-like, this member of the Family Canidae is not as closely related to domestic dogs as one might first suppose. Wild dogs are the only existing representatives of a distinct lineage of wolf-like canids that split off from wolves and jackals more than three million years ago. For this reason wild dogs have a high conservation value – if they become extinct, the planet will lose unique genetic material.

Two highly endangered African wild dogs were introduced on Thursday at Caribbean Gardens in Naples. African wild dogs are more endangered than tigers. Less than 2 percent of American zoos display these animals. Caribbean Gardens is now the only zoo in Florida to have all four of Africa's top four predators: lions, spotted hyenas, leopards and wild dogs.

Statistics Body length: 75-100cm, Tail length: 30-40cm, Standing height: 61-78cm, Weight: 17-36kg. Physical Description Wild dogs have a dark brown coat, which is mottled with brown, black and yellow patches. Each individual has unique markings, rather like fingerprints in humans. The markings may help the dogs to blend in with the pack, so that prey species can not determine how many dogs are in the pack. They have long legs, and a short, powerful muzzle. Distribution Wild dogs live in Africa, south of the Sahara to South Africa, except for the rainforest of West and Central Africa. They have been lost from much of their original range. Habitat Their preferred habitat is savannah, plains, swamps, semi desert and mountains of up to 3,000m.

The Hoedspruit Research and Breeding Center for Endangered Species (the Center) is situated on 100 hectares within the Kapama Private Game Reserve, a reserve found near the town of Hoedspruit in the Northern Province of South Africa.Established in 1988, the Center is the brain-child of Lente Roode, the wife of successful businessman Johan Roode. It was initially established as a breeding programmed for the then endangered cheetah, but following the enormous success of the cheetah breeding program, has evolved into a legitimate breeding program for other endangered African animal species. The ultimate objective of the Center is to return endangered African species to the wild once their numbers have increased to such an extent that they can be released. Needless to say, this is a long-term objective which requires substantial commitment, both human and financial. One of the most successful cheetah release projects was undertaken in June 1993, when two cheetahs were set free on the 2 000 hectare Hoedspruit Air Force Base. The Air Force Base had been faced with a severe safety hazard caused by small game wandering onto the runways. By all indications the pair have been successful in hunting game and are, in fact, thriving in their new environment. Following the success of this project two more cheetah were released onto the nature reserve surrounding the Louis Trichardt Air Force Base on September 1996, and all indications are that they are as successful as the Hoedspruit pair in adapting to their new surroundings.

Standard Correspondent The two animals were sighted early last month at Makalia Falls and various watering holes. Several visitors to the park confirmed seeing the two hunting dogs. A naturalist at lake Nakuru Lodge, Danson Ngigi confirmed yesterday that the animals are the endangered African wild dogs, whose scientific name is Lycaon Pictus. Ngigi said a wildlife specialist team from Nanyuki would come to the park later in the week to determine the sexes of the two predators before mating partners could be introduced. Ngigi observed that the park was too small for the survival of the hunting dogs. He said the animals preferred living in large areas of about 600 square kilometres to over 1,500 square kilometres. The African wild dog looks almost like the domestic dog but it has longer legs, large ears and a mottled fur of brown, black and white. The population of the predators in Africa has been threatened by humans and diseases such as rabies, and others spread by the domestic dogs.

Coat of Many Colours:
The Wild Dog's most distinguishing feature is its wildly variable coat! While other canids generally only have one colour, each Wild Dog has its own distinctive pattern of black, yellow, grey and white. No two dogs have exactly the same pattern. No wonder its Latin name Lycaon pictus means "painted wolf-like animal"!
The bright patterns make the dogs very conspicuous. Rather than for camouflage, their unique patterns may help them recognise each other. No matter what, all Wild Dogs have a dark stripe between the eyes over the top of the head, and a long white tuft on the end of its tail. This helps them keep together as they run and emphasises the tail when it is used in social communication. The Wild Dog is the largest canid in Africa. VITAL STATISTICS

The African Wild Dog
Rare wild dogs give clues to pet behavior
Pat Callahan opened the door into the grotto and the four African wild dogs loped down from the rise at the rear of the enclosure to investigate the keeper and his two companions. Closer they came, eyes intent on the interlopers, large ears ready to scoop up any aberrant sound. They stopped about 10 feet from the visitors and watched for several minutes, curious, alert for any threat. The tension was too much for the black and gold patchwork canids: they exploded into motion, cruising around and around the grotto in perfect unison, long legs consuming ground in a graceful lope, bodies touching as if attached by Velcro strips. They vocalized as they ran, talking to each other and the world in a rapid, chittery language that reinforces the pack bond that is essential for their survival in the wild. The foursome of distant dog-relatives lives at the Cincinnati Zoo, in part through the generosity of the Cincinnati Kennel Club. The zoo is involved in an international effort to save the rare canids, which are threatened by habitat loss and disease in their native Africa. Standing still

Endangered

Although similar in appearance to hyenas, African wild dogs are nevertheless true wild canidae. They are a mixture of black, yellow, and white in such a wide variety of patterns that no two individuals look exactly alike. African wild dogs are widely distributed across the African plains but they do not live in jungle areas.
They are social animals, living in packs of usually from 2 to 45 individuals. A hierarchy exists within the pack, but the animals are so friendly to one another that the pecking order is hard to determine. The young and the infirm are given special privileges within the pack.
African wild dogs use their sense of sight, not smell, to find their prey. They pay no attention to wind direction and they do not use cover when approaching their prey. They can run up to 55 km/h for several kilometres. In eastern Africa, they mostly hunt Thomson’s gazelles, but they will also attack calves, warthogs, zebras, impalas, and the young of large antelopes such as the gnu.
Growing human populations have decreased or degraded the African wild dog’s habitat and also diminished their available prey. Road kill and human persecution have also had a negative impact on African wild dog populations. This species is also susceptible to a variety of diseases such as distemper, which is controlled in domestic dogs. Conservation of the African wild dog’s natural habitat must have the highest priority, as these dogs suffer in habitats modified by human intrusion.

This aircraft has just arrived from the Lowveld. Normally these light aircrafts ferry colourful international tourists around to see our wildlife. This time it carries the real McCoy – two wild dogs. It is their mutilated faces that sparked an outcry when their story and these photographs appeared on the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuaries website. The two sedative dogs are headed for Onderstepoort Veterinary facilities of the University of Pretoria for an intricate operation. According to SanWild, animal lovers raised the R18,000.00 needed to purchase four injured wild dogs from a private zoo, the Farm Inn, outside Pretoria. SanWild claims they felt obliged to rescue the dogs after both Gauteng Nature Conservation and NSPCA ignored their repeated requests to investigate the plight of the dogs at the Farm Inn. SHEFFIELD, England (Reuters) - Scientists are using satellite tracking devices to keep an eye on an endangered species of wild dogs in South Africa and red deer that are destroying forests in the highlands of Scotland. Unlike radio transmitters which have a limited range, satellites allow researchers in Scotland to follow the movement of packs of wild dogs in South Africa's Kruger National Park. ``These systems weren't developed specifically for people to follow mammals we have borrowed the technology,'' Dr Martyn Lee Gorman told a news conference on Friday at the British Association for the Advancement of Science festival. The zoology professor and his colleagues at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and in South Africa are using the ARGOS satellite system and the Global Positioning System (GPS) that was developed by the United States for military purposes. Transmitters attached to the animals send out signals picked up by the ARGOS system. The satellites calculate the transmitter's position on the Earth's surface. ``The GPS system works in a completely different manner. You have a receiver on the animal and that uses radio signals from a number of satellites in the Earth's orbit to calculate its own position on the Earth,'' Gorman explained.

The Botswana Wild Dog Research Project began in 1989 with support from the Frankfurt Zoological Society - Help for Threatened Wildlife (Project 1056/87) in response to international recognition of the need for a greater scientific understanding of Lycaon . Because Botswana is home to a large percentage of the world's remaining wild population and because conflict with domestic livestock has been identified as an important problem, the government of Botswana eagerly endorsed the research. The study area is located in the north-east terminus of the Okavango Delta, encompassing the eastern part of the Moremi Game Reserve. The area is approximately 3,000 square kilometres and is home to an estimated 150 to 200 wild dogs. The focus of the field research has been to continuously monitor a sample of free-ranging wild dog packs in this part of northern Botswana . The results of 9 years of research (and that of concurrent studies in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa) are an impressive archive of information on the wild dog.
