Kindergarten Grade One Grade Two Grade Three ... Grades Nine - Twelve Musical Whole Numbers Designed by: Katie Howard, Caughman Road Elem. Grade Level: Fourth Subject: Math 1) Core Curriculum Objective: Identify and locate missing whole numbers on a given number line. 2) Overview: Students will play a game similar to musical chairs only when the music stops the students will have to get themselves in numerical order instead of getting into an empty chair. This game can be done with whole numbers as stated in this particular objective or the game can be adapted for lots of other skills such as decimal numbers, fractions, or even multiplication and division facts. 3) Essential question: How can you find the numerical order of a group whole number if some of the numbers are missing?

Kindergarten-Special Education Subject: Fun Math with Fins, Fur, and Feathers Description: Activities will introduce and reinforce content objectives from the Kindergarten math curriculum. Activities to be used throughout the duration of the Fin, Fur, and Feather unit. Purpose: To encourage students to become mathematical problem solvers, communicate mathematically, to reason mathematically, and make mathematical connections. Objectives: (As a result of this activity, the students will):
  • Counting (Number and Number Sense K.1, K.2)
  • Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers (Computation and Estimation K.7)
  • Recognizing and Describing Simple Patterns (Patterns, Functions, and Algebra K.20, K.21, K.22)
  • Graphing Using Collected Data (Probability and Statistics K.17, K.18) Prerequisites: Classroom presentations, hands-on experiences, and prior discussions about animals having Fins, Fur, and Feathers (FFF). Resources/Materials/Software/Special Equipment: animal picture cards, plastic animal counters, number cards, computers and the following programs : The Graph Club, Math Keys - Whole Numbers, and Kid Pix.
    LESSON PLAN
    Activities and Procedures:
  • Using plastic animal counters, with the whole group, count aloud and match counters to number cards on a table. Allow students to demonstrate understanding of 1:1 correspondence and number sense using the same materials. Go to Math Keys - Whole Numbers Program on the computer. Open to the Counters activity and Open Mat format. Demonstrate to students counting numbers 1 -10 by clicking on specific FFF icons. Ask students to come up demonstrate understanding by holding up a number card and having them click on the matching number of icons.

Kindergarten Subject: Math using The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Description: My lesson plan is based on a web quest I have developed with a group of other teachers. www.arlington.k12.va.us/schools/barret/webquest/butterfly/index.html This math lesson will be an extension after the Web quest has been done. We will start the lesson by doing a picture walk, reading and discussion of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children will do graphing by hand and using "The Graph Club." They will answer a set of questions using "The Graph Club" and make their Graph Club activities into a book Purpose: Through the different activities the students will learn to use one-to-one correspondence, when making and interpreting a graph. They will learn to use the same information in different graphs, such as picture, bar, line and circle graphs. Objectives: As a result of this activity, the students will have an under- standing of:
  • Computation and Estimation (K.7): Add whole numbers using up to 10 concrete items.
  • Number and Number sense (K.1): Compare sets to 10. (K.2): Order numbers.

C. Represent commonly used fractions using words and physical models.
D. Demonstrate fluency in addition facts with addends through 9 and corresponding subtractions. Objective
The students will learn the note values of whole, half, and quarter notes and will create various measures of music that include combinations of those given notes. They will use both 4/4 and 3/4 time signature. Materials

1. Teach the students about twhole, half, and quarter notes and their values. 2. Each measure (in 4/4) has 4 beats. How many different combinations of 4 beats can the class come up with? 3. Given 2 measures - each measure needing 4 beats - how many combinations can the class identify? 4. The opening section of Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony is 16 measures long - with 4 beats per measure.

How Many More Fish? Pre-K - 2 Number and Operations Unit Plan 7 Lessons 30 minutes each This unit plan focuses on comparative subtraction. The students use fish-shaped crackers to explore all five meanings for the operations of subtraction (counting, sets, number line, balance, and inverse of addition). In these lessons, the students use reasoning, then represent and communicate their findings. Blue
Set Red
Set
Mathematical The unit includes activities designed to help students construct a rich conceptual schema of subtraction in the comparative mode. This mode is used to answer such questions as "How many more?" and "How many less?" Making and reading bar graphs gives students an opportunity to apply these understandings. Missing addend activities provide students with an experience in algebraic thinking. Using the Plan: This set of lessons is designed to be taught sequentially. Individual lessons may be taught to enrich teacher-prepared lessons. The time spent on each lesson will, of course, vary according to the abilities of the students. Before beginning the unit, teachers may wish to determine whether any students are allergic to the kind of cracker they are using. In some localities, a large fish-shaped cracker is available. This size may be easier for some students to handle.

Problem Solving with Shapes Objective : To create as many different shapes as possible with three toothpicks. Digit Place Game Objective : To demonstrate place value of whole numbers. Angle Estimation Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate and estimate the sizes of an angle formed from a hands-on model. Multiplication and Addition Skills Objective : Students will enforce multiplication and/or addition skills through a game format. Students will work in small group or whole group settings. Students will also develop probability/chance concepts. Fractions Objective : The students will add multiply, and divide proper and improper fractions with common and uncommon denominators to find the answer of one. Probability Objective : Using dice, the students will determine the probability of certain outcomes. After collecting data, they will then determine the mode, median and range. Eventually they will make predictions. Prior Knowledge: ¥ Using other sets of data.

2. remember this rule of operations: A ddition and M ultiplication can A lways be M ixed up.
For S ubtraction and D ivision, S ame order is D esired. Note to teacher, parent, or tutor:
These problems demonstrate the commutative operation when dealing with addition and multiplication. Teaching this as a foundational truth now will facilitate pre-algebra concepts that your child will meet with in the future. Outline:
Did you know that if you add 4 and 3, it is the same as adding 3 and 4?
Both problems have the same answer! That means that when you add, you can turn the problems upside down and you will get the same answer. That’s a neat trick! Let’s try some more problems. Assignment(s):
Circle the correct choice:
1. The answers for the first row are (in order)

Volunteerism Talk about volunteerism with your students. Start the discussion with these questions.
  • Do you volunteer?
  • Where do you volunteer your time and talents?
  • How much time do you volunteer?
  • Why did you volunteer? Discuss the rewards of volunteering. Refer to the Moneyopolis SM Proclamation that mentions honing job and leadership skills, fulfilling community needs, and developing a sense of spirit and belonging.
  • Do you think volunteerism should be a required community service or a personal choice? Take a poll of the class. Tally the results, calculate the percent of each choice, and make a circle graph. Copy the After School Daily Planner shown below on the chalkboard. Direct each student to make a daily planner and fill it out scheduling at least 2 hours each day for homework and reading.
