Give up? It is a trick question. You cannot do it. There is no convincing someone who has his mind made up already. But sometimes, it is even worse. Sometimes, when you point out a fossil that falls into the middle of a gap and is a superb morphological and chronological intermediate, you are met with the response: "Well, now you have two gaps where you only had one before! You are losing ground!" One of the favorite anti-evolutionist challenges to the existence of transitional fossils is the supposed lack of transitional forms in the evolution of the whales. Duane Gish of the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) regularly trots out the "bossie-to-blowhole" transition to ridicule the idea that whales could have evolved from terrestrial, hooved ancestors. There simply are no transitional forms in the fossil record between the marine mammals and their supposed land mammal ancestors . . . It is quite entertaining, starting with cows, pigs, or buffaloes, to attempt to visualize what the intermediates may have looked life. Starting with a cow, one could even imagine one line of descent which prematurely became extinct, due to what might be called an “udder failure” (Gish 1985: 78-9).

For the Soviet Union the war began on June 22, 1941. MOSCOW was to have a key role in this devastating war, but the initial German plans concentrated on the destruction of the Red Army, and the offensive against Moscow. By the beginning of December some German Nazi formations were only about forty km north west of the Moscow Kremlin. STALINGRAD (now Volgograd) is a place of fierce and decisive battle which is considered by Russians a turning point in the W.W.II. The city was totally destroyed in the battle. KURSK. The battle near Kursk is known as the biggest tank battle in the history of mankind. The Nazi armies could not recover after this defeat. TOUR GOAL. The tour is addressed to all people interested in learning more about the Second World War or the Great Patriotic War as Russians call it. We have included the major cities where the biggest battles of the War took place. Some non military museums we also included. These are the museums which one can not but visit being in Russia such as Kremlin, Hermitage. We did this combination because we strongly think that culture is part of the national character which helped Russian together with the allies to win the Second World War. Seabirds and Whales of Louisiana The Louisiana Ornithological Society (LOS) sponsors daylong expeditions starting from Port Fourchon, LA, to search the deep waters off the mouth of the Mississippi River for seabirds, whales, and dolphins. In many ways these have been voyages of discovery; scientific knowledge of the seabirds of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana is limited and fragmentary. After a thirty day gestation period, the young are born live, usually in groups of seven or eight babies, known as "Piddlins." Population: There are currently more than 17 million Beluga Whales. Status: Not Threatened. The Beluga Whale, first discovered by Spanish explorers in 1719, is among the most misunderstood sea creatures in the animal world. The Beluga is not a "true whale," but rather a water-breathing fish closely related to the sailfish and marlin. Beluga whales have a large forehead, a sign of their high intelligence. Beluga whales are, in fact, the smartest animals on earth with an average I.Q. (intelligence quotient) of 155, a level that would be considered near genius in humans. In 1979, Russian chess master, Boris Spasky faced off in a highly publicized match with "Minsky," a thirty-four year old female beluga. Using her nose to "move" the pieces on an electronic touchpad, Minsky beat her human opponent in less than one hour! Beluga whales live long lives, feeding mainly upon seals and larger species of fish. If you are ever lucky enough to see a great whale swimming in the ocean, you will never forget it! They only give themselves away when they come up to breathe and send up gigantic spouts of air and water from their blowholes. Whales are divided into two groups. The baleen or whalebone whales have no teeth, only a flexible horny substance called baleen, which looks like a sieve or strainer, suspended from the upper jaw. The baleen group of whales has 10 species, including most of the enormous whales. The other group is the toothed whales which have teeth. This group has 66 species and includes sperm whales, killer whales, dolphins and porpoises. Toothed whales are smaller but vary in size, from 1.3m long dolphins to the 18 m Sperm Whale that weighs almost 70 tonnes.
