It is generally conceded that an effective educational system is a prerequisite for sustained economic development. The contemporary work place requires a literate, skilled problem solver. Historically, West Virginia has lagged behind much of the nation in promoting education; however, this is no longer the case. For the past number of years, West Virginia has been undergoing an educational revolution, and Wyoming County has been an integral part of this revolution. The administration of education in West Virginia is organized around county school districts. County government does not control local education but, rather school districts and county government share a common border. They are separate units of government. In West Virginia, the state government is relatively powerful in establishing educational policy. State government disproportionally funds education, and therefore, the State Department of Education often establishes policies which local districts must implement. | |
