WVDE Office of Child Nutrition Receives National Awards for Nutrition Programs Posted: March 04th, 2003
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The West Virginia Department of Education has been recognized for its continuing commitment to children and nutrition. The Office of Child Nutrition received a Leadership, Innovation and Nutrition Collaboration (LINC) award during the first National Nutrition Education Conference in Washington, D.C.
The Office of Child Nutrition won first place in the category “Nourishing Tomorrow’s Nutrition Leaders and Practitioners.” WVDE was acknowledged for its efforts in promoting positive eating behaviors for children. The department’s Child Nutrition Program received recognition for organizing summer nutrition education symposiums for educators, health professionals, school food service personnel, parents and community nutrition specialists.
Sponsored by Fairmont State College Child Nutrition Center, these symposiums focused on physical activity practices and addressed West Virginia children’s nutrition-related health problems, such as obesity, overweight and related public health concerns.
“Schools can play an important role in helping kids learn to become competent eaters. Kids who eat at school are better nourished and better prepared to learn,” said Mary Kay Harrison, Executive Director, WVDE, Office of Child Nutrition.

At the beginning of the school year, Greenbrier East High School instituted a "kick off" picnic. Tents were set up and lunch was served picnic style. Got Milk Coolers were used to keep the milk cool and the students had a completely reimbursable lunch. Greenbrier East also collaborates with their Partner in Education to have a Greenbrier Day during the American Education Week. Chefs from the Greenbrier resort come in to help the cooks and Pro Start Class prepare the meal. There are ice carvers, music and table cloths. The gym is transformed into a lovely dining area. Patsy Stafford, Cafeteria Manager, noticed the overcrowding in the cafeteria each morning and the empty gym nearby. With the principal's support and the support of the physical education teacher, Elkview Middle School has a walking program for the students. Now, every morning students have the opportunity to have breakfast, walk, and go to home base class. Students are enjoying the less-crowded cafeteria and walking in the gym with their friends!

CHARLESTON With obesity in the state spreading rapidly and affordable health care becoming harder to find, West Virginia’s dieticians held their first symposium Thursday in hopes of putting pressure on legislators to address these issues. The first West Virginia Dietetic Association Public Policy Symposium was designed to make dieticians and health professionals active in the political realm to address issues such as Medicaid and health education, said Helen Lodge, a Charleston dietician who is the legislative chairwoman of the West Virginia Dietetic Association. At the symposium, speakers talked of many health care issues facing the state and nation and briefed the attendees on how the legislature works.
