63. West Virginia/Virginia Floods
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod) is responding in west virginia through the west virginia Council of churches.
http://www.elca.org/dcs/disaster/wvvafloods.html

Back to list of current disasters
West Virginia/Virginia Floods Full Report Short Report May 8, 2002 Dear friends in Christ, Last year, Bishop Ralph Dunkin (ELCA West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod) was reflecting on July 2001 floods that had devastated major areas of West Virginia and Virginia. "The need is very real, and it will not go away quickly," he said. "As with most disasters, they strike the poor the hardest. Your prayers and gifts are definitely needed." Last week, on May 2, five inches of rain in less than one hour poured down in the same areas. Devastating floodwaters again have passed through portions of McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, and Wyoming counties in West Virginia, and though Buchanan and Tazewell counties in southwest Virginia. In some places there was greater destruction than last year. The American Red Cross reports "at least six people were killed, 10 remain missing, and some 2,300 homes were damaged." Once again, this is not a "Lutheran" disaster. Few Lutherans were directly affected. Once again, it is a "poor person's" disaster.

Betty Dotson-Lewis, webmaster This story was written by Lola B. Given in July of 1997. Although her roots are in Widen and Dille, she now resides in Frametown, Braxton County, West Virginia. An interesting addition to this story is the photograph submitted by Mrs Given's nephew Harold Lloyd deceased . The picture is a shot of the 1923 Widen Flood that did considerable damage to the town. The view is of Nicholas Street.

Eph. 2:8-9
Familiarity does not always breed contempt, but it can cause us to take things for granted. In retrospect, such are my feelings about the Widen and Dille vicinity. I was born and raised between the two towns on the old Will Murphy farm and could not think of one town without the other. Six decades ago, at its peak, Widen, West Virginia, had 3,000 people. Today there are less than 200. A coal mining camp some 21 miles from Clay out Dundon Ridge, some 11 miles from Birch River, Widen was a town all its own. Today its almost just a memory. Most of the houses have been torn down. The Baptist Church on which my brothers did the carpentry work is still somewhat active. The post office is still open. But coal production and the booming times that accompanied it are gone
On an average of once a year Bradley came to Widen and Swandale to see how the superintendent was handling things. It was a great day for the employees to listen to his words of wisdom. He was a great orator. Isolated by often muddy messy roads and poor communications, most of us at Widen thought of Swandale as another world. Lumber was their product and coal was ours.

WEST VIRGINIA RELIGIOUS LEADERS' STATEMENT
TO THE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE TRAINING EVENT
Scripture teaches : "The Earth is the Lord’s" (Psalm 24:1)
• Climate change afflicts God’s children. Global warming diminishes our supplies of food and water. It is leading to the spread of infectious disease. it destroys agricultural livelihood. Those living on islands and low-lying coasts will lose homes and safety. Already, we see how people are dying from extreme weather conditions believed to be enhanced by climate change : record-breaking storms, heat waves, floods, droughts. Scripture teaches : "...You shall love your neighbor as yourself..." (Lev. 19:18)
• Climate change violates moral and religious principles of justice. The rich of the world, the industrialized nations, are primarily responsible for the increase of greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming. Yet burdens fall disproportionately upon the most vulnerable of the planet’s people : the poor, sick, elderly, and those who will face still greater threats in future generations. Scripture teaches : "Justice, and only justice, you shall follow..." (Deut. 16:20)

1. African Zion Baptist Church, Malden The African Zion Baptist Church is considered one of the mother churches of black Baptists in west virginia.
http://www.callwva.com/heritage/africana.cfm
Heritage Sites on the National Register of Historic Places African-American History in West Virginia The African-American presence in West Virginia dates from the 1780s, when European exploring parties brought slaves to the Greenbrier and New River valleys. During the French and Indian Wars, blacks aided the army as it moved through the New River and Big Sandy valleys up toward the Ohio River and helped to stake claims for white settlers. By 1830, the black population in the state was nearly 20,000, most of who worked as slaves in the region's newly emerging industries of iron, coal and salt. This generation of blacks contributed many African items that now are enjoyed by West Virginians of all cultural backgrounds, including the banjo and the black-eye pea. One of the most notable events in the state's history was the 1859 raid on the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry by abolitionist John Brown, in search of arms to provoke a slave revolt. This episode set off a chain of events that eventually led to the Civil War. In 1863, the western counties of Virginia seceded to become the state of West Virginia. When the legislature abolished slavery two years later, many blacks left the state in search of relatives and greater security. The ancestors of most black West Virginians entered the state between 1870 to 1930, as African-Americans came to constitute about 23 percent of the total labor force in the southern part of the state, attracted mainly by the bituminous coal industry. They were drawn from Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, and to a lesser extent from Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. This period saw the explosive growth of churches, which served as the central institutions of African-American communities, and fraternal orders like the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Masons, Elks, and the Knight of Pythias, which spearheaded a national effort to get blacks to buy land.
