Compilations of Genealogical Data
Printed volumes of various types of records, such as marriages, births, deaths, cemetery readings, estate settlements, census listings, and census indexes are available for most counties. Hundreds of West Virginia churches have published histories or directories. Church and synagogue histories frequently include membership rolls, vital statistics, and biographies of clergy. Congregational directories often contain identified photographs of families. High school yearbooks, college yearbooks, and alumni publications usually provide some biographical information along with a photograph. City directories, available for about two dozen of the largest West Virginia towns, provide complete listings of citizens with their place of residence and type of employment. Wheeling, Martinsburg, and Charleston had directories as early as the 1870s. Directories from other cities began to appear in the 1890s and early 1900s. State gazetteers, published from 1875 to 1924, include comprehensive listings of businessmen involved in every sort of enterprise in towns large and small. Immigration records provide data on the place and date of the entry of people into the United States. A useful source with which to begin a search is Passenger and Immigration Lists Index: A Guide to Published Arrival Records...(Detroit, Mich., Gale Research Co., 1981.) The 1981 edition comprised 3 volumes and supplements have been issued annually since 1982. Land transactions also provide evidence of an ancestor's location. A comprehensive published guide to pre-1900 land records from West Virginia's counties is Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia, (Charleston, State Auditor, 1952.)

This partnership has enabled West Virginia churches to have sister churches in Africa. Letters and prayers have traveled many miles. The First Presbyterian Church of Morgantown invited one person from Kenya to visit Morgantown for six months. The Presbyterians of West Virginia appreciate the commitment and the love of Christ that is evident in their African brothers and sisters.

West Virginia Council of Churches OUR MISSION: The West Virginia Council of Churches makes more visible the unity of Christ's church,
provides a Christian witness on public issues,
and engages in cooperative mission and service for all West Virginians. OUR HISTORY: The West Virginia Council of Churches is one of the oldest institutions in the state of
West Virginia. We can trace our origins to 1880 and our roots to the 1820s. In 1880, the West Virginia Sunday School Association was legally organized.
This offshoot of the International Sunday School Association marks our historic beginning. In the time between 1880 and the present, the work of a few volunteers has blossomed into a common Christian mission. The West Virginia Council of Churches currently includes 18 denominations in the state, whose membership rolls approach 600,000. Respecting the traditions of each denomination - while uniting to speak with one voice and to act with united hands - we carry the message of Christ's church into the public arena. Over the years, the West Virginia Council of Churches has been active in areas of social justice, health and economic issues, legislative issues and disaster response.

    About the church
In 1862 the men studied the Bible and the teaching of Alexander Campbell and organized a structure of worship according to the pattern shown in the New Testament. They were known as the Warren Disciples Church, and later as the Pinehurst Christian Church which is still used today. The first meeting place was a one room school on Rt. 550. In 1880 the first church building was constructed also on Rt. 550. Around 1971 the congregation moved into its present building across the highway. This congregation is a body of believers trying to serve God and community according to the pattern given by Jesus and his Disciples in the New Testament. The believers at Pinehurst are very serious about spreading the word of God and 30 percent of all offerings are presently being used to support several missions, both in country and overseas. We have a tape ministry that reaches over 15 different countries. Those who obeyed the Gospel set forth in the New Testament were known simply as Christians. Christians make up the Body of Christ, the church. The church is a simple association of local Christians meeting around the Lord's table every Lord's day, and working to evangelize the community through the week by means of teaching and living in the example set forth by our Lord, Jesus. The Pinehurst congregation are simple Christians who believe the Bible to be the inspired, inherent word of God, and as such, is our only rule and guide. We invite you to join us.
