January 4, 2003
The other day I was set for some relaxation time watching on TV the 1963 movie, "How the West Was Won," with a star-studded cast, including, Spencer Tracy and Henry Fonda and partially directed by John Ford. Later I watched a documentary on the History channel about the untold story of General Custer's last stand against the Indians now called Native Americans.
The movie "How the West Was Won," is a grandiose Hollywood make-believe spin-job about the early pioneers, refugees from the Old World, spreading like a plague across new America and our Army chasing the Native Americans off their ancestral land to make room for these immigrants. The History channel program happened to be more balanced by at least showing some of the Native Americans points-of-view.
As it turned out neither was very relaxing. I had a hard time concentrating on the TV. Why? My mind kept wondering to another West the West Bank. A similar struggle is taking place between the hoards of settlers pouring into Israel and the West Bank with their insatiable appetite for land, which requires displacement of native Palestinians. The Palestinians, similar to the Native Americans, are standing in the way of Sharon's vision of a greater Israel.

United National Bank and WVU team up to make geography fun for state's school children
West Virginia University and United National Bank have teamed up to provide a unique program for West Virginia school children that combines sports and geography to make learning fun. More than 21,000 West Virginia elementary and middle school children from nearly 500 classrooms in 53 of 55 counties will be participating in the Sporting Geography program, which focuses primarily on the travel of the WVU men's and women's basketball teams through the 1997-98 season. The Sporting Geography program includes a workbook developed for hands-on use in the classroom. Each workbook features reproducible weekly lesson plans combined with desk maps and resourceful information. The lesson plans address the National Geography Standards, as well as the state requirements for geography education in grades four through eight. Students find the program motivating and learn a great deal about their home team, its opponents and the geography involved in the teams' travel. The program will feature visits to area classrooms by Mountaineer basketball players and coaches.

t's not, for the most part, a towering concrete wall. It won't cut off "200,000 Palestinians" from Palestinian territory. And it won't involve Israel annexing massive chunks of the West Bank. Hebrew University Geography Professor Noam Shoval made those points in a lecture at the Asper Jewish Community Campus's Berney Theatre February 5, 2004. The Jerusalem-born Shoval, who has a PhD in geography from Hebrew U, spoke about Israel's Security Fence - The Impacts on Israel and Jerusalem. Shoval tackled myths that have sprung up about the fence over the past few years in his lecture, sponsored by the Winnipeg Chapter of Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University.
"Palestinians have managed to convince the international media that Israel is building a 600-kilometre concrete wall, eight metres high," he said, as maps of the wall, statistics and photos appeared on a screen behind him. In fact, the "concrete wall" the media often use to make that point was built by a Canadian company at the end of the 1990s."It (originally) didn't have anything to do with the security fence,"the first section of which was finished only last July 31.

Geography of Israel
World Facts Index Israel Map of Israel Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded on the north by Lebanon, on the northeast by Syria, on the east and southeast by Jordan, on the southwest by Egypt, and on the west by the Mediterranean Sea. Before June 1967, the area composing Israel (resulting from the armistice lines of 1949 and 1950) was about 20,700 square kilometers, which included 445 square kilometers of inland water. Thus Israel was roughly the size of the state of New Jersey, stretching 424 kilometers from north to south. Its width ranged from 114 kilometers to, at its narrowest point, 10 kilometers. The area added to Israel after the June 1967 War, consisting of occupied territories (the West Banksee Glossaryand the Gaza Strip) and annexed territories (East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights) totaled an additional 7,477 square kilometers. The areas comprised the West Bank, 5,879 kilometers; the Gaza Strip, 378; East Jerusalem, 70; and the Golan Heights, 1,150. Topography The country is divided into four regions: the coastal plain, the central hills, the Jordan Rift Valley, and the Negev Desert. The Mediterranean coastal plain stretches from the Lebanese border in the north to Gaza in the south, interrupted only by Cape Carmel at Haifa Bay. It is about forty kilometers wide at Gaza and narrows toward the north to about five kilometers at the Lebanese border. The region is fertile and humid (historically malarial) and is known for its citrus and viniculture. The plain is traversed by several short streams, of which only two, the Yarqon and Qishon, have permanent water flows.

Why did Jordan renounce all claims to the West Bank ( Judea and Samaria ) in 1988?
As a result of Israel's War of Independence in 1948 , Jordan occupied East Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria , land known since that time as the "West Bank". In April 1950, Jordan annexed eastern Jerusalem (dividing the city for the first time in its history) and the "West Bank" areas in historical Judea and Samaria that Trans-Jordan had occupied by military force in 1948 (Jordan changed its name to Trans-Jordan in April 1949). On April 24, 1950, the Jordan House of Deputies and House of Notables, in a joint session, adopted a Resolution making the West Bank and Jerusalem part of Jordan . This act had no basis in international law; it was only the de facto act of Trans-Jordan as a conquerer. The other Arab countries denied formal recognition of the Jordanian move and only two governments - Great Britain and Pakistan - formally recognized the Jordanian takeover. The rest of the world, including the United States, never did.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES through BASIC SERVICES
“JOBS” Issuance Date: February 4, 2002 This program is authorized in accordance with the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 Ladies/Gentlemen: The United States Agency for International Development, Mission to the West Bank and Gaza (USAID/WBG), is seeking applications from U.S. private and voluntary organizations (USPVOs), U.S. for-profit companies willing to forego profit, and public international organizations (PIOs), to implement a multi-faceted program to address urgent needs among Palestinians, focussing on generating employment through provision of basic services and improving and constructing various types of infrastructure in Palestinian villages, towns, and municipalities in the West Bank and Gaza. A. BACKGROUND In March 1995, USAID provided $22.9 million in assistance through the Small Scale Community Infrastructure Project to create immediate, primarily short-term, jobs for Palestinians. This project established and funded a small enterprise loan program, school maintenance and construction, and after-school recreation activities. Results under this program were impressive. USAID assistance supported repairs at 100 schools, constructed 32 playgrounds, built 75 school boundary walls, and rehabilitated over 500 housing units. As a result of this program, approximately 330,000 person days of employment were generated over three years. The employment generated from these activities provided employment to Palestinians affected by closure and improved the basic infrastructure in the West Bank and Gaza.
