"Unlike the English, the Welsh and the Scots and the Irish at least know who they are and where they want to be." Is this true? Welsh literature and culture will be given a context in this meeting of contemporary Welsh writers, who will give a reading of their own work. In Shifts (1988), his first novel, Christopher Meredith captured the lilt of the Welsh accent and the hard-nosed working-class flippancy. He has been awarded an Arts Council of Wales Prize for his work on several occasions. Wiliam Owen Roberts's first novel Bingo! (1985), was described as the first properly post-modern Welsh novel and marked the beginning of a period of new maturity in the Welsh novel's history. Y Pla Pestilence ) (1987), a novel about the Black Plague in the 14th century, won him an Arts Council of Wales Prize in 1988.

However, there s a lot more to it than that! welsh literature dates back to the 6th century, making Welsh Europe s oldest living language.
http://westwales.co.uk/lang.htm
Welsh culture is popularly associated with singing - particularly male voice choirs - and with harp music. However, there's a lot more to it than that! Welsh literature dates back to the 6th century, making Welsh Europe's oldest living language. Welsh is a Celtic language, closely related to Breton and more distantly related to Scottish and Irish Gaelic. It is still the mother-tongue of a large number of people, and is taught either as a first or second language in all schools in Wales. Courses in Welsh for adults are held all over the country; one special location for residential courses is the Nant Gwrtheyrn centre (details of this site are also available in Welsh ). A Web-based Welsh course is also available. Modern Welsh literature has been written in both English and Welsh in all the standard literary forms - poetry, drama, novels, short stories etc; one of the leading modern Welsh publishers is Y Lolfa, whose catalogue is now available on the Web. A useful site containing information about many aspects of the poetry of Wales in both Welsh and English is available on the Web.

Anglo-Welsh literature
Anglo-Welsh literature is a term used to describe works written in the English language by Welsh writers, especially if they either have subject matter relating to Wales or (as in the case of Anglo-Welsh poetry in particular) are influenced by the Welsh language in terms of patterns of usage or syntax. It has been recognised as a distinctive entity only since the 20th century . The need for a separate identity for this kind of writing arose because of the parallel development of modern Welsh literature , ie. literature in the Welsh language. Many distinguished literary figures, such as Saunders Lewis , have written in both languages. The best known Anglo-Welsh poet is Dylan Thomas , followed by Ronald Stuart Thomas . Poets such as Robert Graves can be regarded as Anglo-Welsh, insofar as they write about or in Wales, even though they may not have Welsh blood. Anglo-Welsh novelists include Richard Llewellyn and Jack Jones . Their usage of language marks them out from writers of "standard" English, as demonstrated in the following extracts: My father moved his head, and I looked down at him, sideways to me, and tried to think what I could do to ease him, only for him to have a breath.
