Nations can have literatures, as can corporations, philosophical schools or historical periods. GCSE Welsh literature results 1998-2001
GCSE Welsh literature results 1998-2001 In interpreting results presented by subject, it is necessary to bear in mind that GCSE grades are awarded using judgements about the quality of candidates' performances and that different subjects attract different groups of candidates. Grade distributions will not, therefore, necessarily be similar from subject to subject. For example, examinations in Classical Subjects tend to attract a particularly able group of candidates. QCA, ACCAC and the awarding bodies carry out a number of monitoring activities to check that standards are being maintained from year to year. Every year, QCA and ACCAC oversee checks by independent specialists in selected subjects. The implementation of the Mandatory Code of Practice for the GCSE will continue to improve the consistency of practice between awarding bodies. In some subjects, External Assessors appointed by QCA and ACCAC, will also help the awarding bodies to ensure that the same standards are applied to different examinations across England and Wales. The data were provided by the GCSE awarding bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and are for candidates of all ages, although the majority were 16 at the time of the examinations. These are the Joint Council's final results after any enquiries about the results have been completed.

EARLY REFERENCES TO TREE-FRUIT IN WELSH LITERATURE
Joan Morgan outlines possible references to young fruit trees known as 'imps' in the Laws of Hywel Dda. These were composed in about 930 (although written down much later), and contain references to both 'sweet' and 'sour' apples. The 'sour' apples could easily be native crabs, but the reference to 'sweet' apples, and the monetary value placed on these 'imps', strongly suggests the cultivation of seedlings from choice fruit, and quite possibly the propagation of graft wood from such trees. There are references to apples and the attractiveness of apple blossom to be found in early Welsh poetry. The most substantial and beautiful of these is undoubtedly the Afallennau (Merlin's Apple Trees), included in the 'Black Book of Carmarthen' - a place name which means, literally, Merlin's Tower. This was transcribed in about 1250, but events mentioned in the text are much earlier (possibly from as far back as the late C6th), and it is generally considered to be a collection of much earlier oral works. In the Afallennau a tree (or series of trees) is praised at the start of each verse, before launching into prophecies. Merlin seems to be seeking protection amongst the trees, and perhaps to need their assistance in inspiring his foresights:

    Dictionary Definition of Anglo-Welsh literature

Anglo-Welsh literature is a term used to describe works written in the English language by Welsh writers, especially if they either have subject matter relating to Wales or (as in the case of Anglo-Welsh poetry in particular) are influenced by the Welsh language in terms of patterns of usage or syntax. It has been recognised as a distinctive entity only since the 20th century . The need for a separate identity for this kind of writing arose because of the parallel development of modern Welsh literature , ie. literature in the Welsh language. Many distinguished literary figures, such as Saunders Lewis , have written in both languages. The best known Anglo-Welsh poet is Dylan Thomas , followed by Ronald Stuart Thomas . Poets such as Robert Graves can be regarded as Anglo-Welsh, insofar as they write about or in Wales, even though they may not have Welsh blood. Anglo-Welsh novelists include Richard Llewellyn and Jack Jones . Their usage of language marks them out from writers of "standard" English, as demonstrated in the following extracts:

Related Category: Miscellaneous European Literature The earliest Welsh literature is preserved in about half a dozen manuscripts written with one exception after the 12th cent. However, the literature was highly developed well before the Norman Conquest. Of early extant works the most important, the so-called Four Ancient Books of Wales, are The Book of Aneurin, The Book of Taliesin, The Black Book of Caemarthen, and The Red Book of Hergest. Much of the poetry in these manuscripts is credited to four late 6th-century bards : Aneurin Taliesin , Myrddin (the Merlin of Arthurian romance), and Llywarch Hen : and most of the anonymous poetry is marked by style and subject as belonging to their various schools. Early Welsh poetry is epic, romantic, and historical. Songs in praise of heroes (many pre-Christian and mythological) and elegiac poems of desolation and longing frequently appear. They are marked by a rich, musical style, displaying the verbal felicity of a highly developed art. Among early prose survivals, the classic is the Mabinogion (set down c.1060). In this work the cycle of stories concerning the old Celtic gods and heroes : similar to those in Irish and Arthurian literature : is expanded by the addition of later stories and partly transformed by numerous Welsh revisions.
