Wales and the Welsh Language
Introduction
History of Wales Historical Reading List Welsh Language Reading List ... Everything Welsh on the Web LEARNING THE WELSH LANGUAGE Our language is distinct, ancient and living! Our Language is a Celtic one, and scholars say that it is one of (if not the) oldest languages spoken in Europe. It is a language of bards and scholars, of poets and priests, of ancient manuscripts and modern TV. And it is a language that links us back into the depths of history and leads us into the future.
CYMRU has blessed its people and the world with an unending supply of poets, from the bards of the Dark and Middle Ages, to the writers of today. Experience them to their fullest. Read excerpts from some of our greatest authors (in Welsh).

About Caerphilly Youth Hockey. Caerphilly youth Hockey club, is run for young people of under 16 years. We play field Hockey not ice-hockey or roller-hockey.
The coach of the club is Gaynor and Ruth is assistant coach.
We train at 9 a.m. -10.30 a.m. on a Saturday morning on the Astroturf at Bedwas Comprehensive School.
If you fancy coming along but you don't have your own stick, that is ok because we can lend you one.
For any young, inspired player over the age of 16 or if you just can't make the Saturday morning training session, there is however a senior ladies team, they train at 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night at Bedwas. Your first time here would also be free.
As you have probably gathered we play in Black and Orange , our reserve kit is Purple with White or Black socks.
  • Both December matches cancelled, see fixtures list for details of any rescheduling. Well done to all the girls who received an award at the annual Caerphilly School Sports Association awards ceremony in January. The award was for the team's excellent performance at the tournament in September, (see the Fixtures page)

Wales and the Welsh Language
Introduction
History of Wales Historical Reading List Learning the Welsh Language ... Everything Welsh on the Web
WELSH LANGUGE READING LIST
  • Mabinogion or The Four Branches of the Mabinogi , unknown, tr. Jeffrey Gantz, 1976, Penguin Books Ltd., Harmondsworth UK. Collection of eleven prose tales from the Welsh oral tradition; the earliest manuscript dates from about 1325. The Mabinogion , By Jones, Gwyn, and Jones, Thomas. Dent, 1984. This is invaluable for attempting to read the original manuscripts, as it's a very literal translation of the material. It's drawback is the same as it's feature - if you aren't translating, I would not choose this as my first exposure to Welsh, as it's written in very stilted, formal, almost Victorian English. A Grammar of Middle Welsh The dictionary is: Evans and Thomas , Y Geiriadur Mawr; Gwasg Gomer, Llandysul, 1986. (Welsh - English and English - Welsh sections.) I also suggest the introduction from: Thomson, R. L., Pwyll Pendeuic Dyuet ; Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 1980. Try reading through some of the Welsh from the Jones and Jones

Language, Grammar and Dictionaries
  • Janet Davies, The Welsh Language (1993), now republished as The Welsh Language: A Pocket Guide `Gododdin' , preceded by a reproduction of the poignant memorial to a family of four on the eighth(?)-century inscribed stone at Tywyn, Meirionydd - tricet nitanam (elsewhere interpreted by Ifor Williams as `grief and loss remain', see The Beginnings of Welsh Poetry .). The many maps, plates and reproductions of pages from early printed books, the inset quotations exemplifying categories of borrowed words, together with excerpts from famous poems, are further attractive features of the book. Bibliographical references are unfortunately minimal. Henry Lewis, Datblygiad yr Iaith Gymraeg Yr Elfen Ladin yn yr Iaith Gymraeg T.J. Morgan, Y Treigladau a'u Cystrawen (The Mutations and their Syntax) (1952, 1989). An unprecedented attempt, in nearly five hundred pages, to demonstrate hard and fast grammatical rules as governing the syntax of the initial consonantal mutations, both in the spoken language and in written Welsh of all periods. Although it has been shown that no such comprehensive rules are warranted by the facts, TJM's overall survey constitutes an indispensable work of reference, and an essential point of departure for any future studies of the subject. There are inevitably gaps in the literary sources which have been consulted, and little distinction has been made between dialectal differences in the spoken language; nor is there any reference to the corresponding mutations in the other Celtic languages, or to the instances in `canu caeth' in which the mutations have been manipulated to suit the demands of `cynghanedd'. (These points were made in a review by J.E. Caerwyn Williams

    Welsh (Y Gymraeg)
Welsh is a Celtic language spoken mainly in Wales (Cymru) and also in England (Lloegr), Scotland (yr Alban), Argentina (yr Ariannin), Canada, the USA (yr Unol Daleithiau), Australia (Awstralia) and New Zealand (Seland Newydd). Welsh is fairly closely related to Cornish and Breton , and more distantly related to Irish Gaelic Manx Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic At the beginning of the 20th century about half of the population of Wales spoke Welsh as an everyday language. Towards the end of the century, the proportion of Welsh speakers had fallen to about 20%. According to the 2001 census 23% of the population, 659,301 people, can speak the language and a total of 797,717 people, 28% of the population, claim to have some knowledge it. According to a survey carried out by S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, the number of Welsh speakers in Wales is around 750,000, and about 1.5 million people can 'understand' Welsh. In addition there are an estimated 133,000 Welsh-speakers living in England, about 50,000 of them in the Greater London area. The earliest known examples of Welsh literature are the poems of Taliesin, which feature Urien of Rheged, a 6th century king in what is now southern Scotland, and Aneirin's

The census gives a figure of 20.5% of the population of Wales as Welsh speakers (up from 18.5% in ), out of a population of about 3 million, however it appears that about a third of the population of Wales has immigrated within the last 30 years. Even among the Welsh-speakers, few, if any, residents of Wales are monolingual in Welsh. Although Welsh is a minority language, and thus threatened by the dominance of English , support for the language grew during the second half of the twentieth century , along with the rise of nationalist political organisations such as the political party Plaid Cymru and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (the Welsh Language Society).

A Historical Corpus of the Welsh Language
    AHRB award no. RE11900
    Principal investigator: David Willis
    Research associate: Ingo Mittendorf
Click here for Welsh language version The project aims to produce a historical corpus of Welsh texts from the period 1500-1850 in an electronic format. Although similar corpora exist for such languages as English, French, German and Irish, there is a shortage of such resources in Welsh. This project will deal with the Early Modern Welsh period; a similar project to edit fourteenth-century Welsh manuscripts is currently in progress at the University of Wales. The corpus will reflect the rich diversity of the texts attested for the period by including texts and samples of texts from different stylistic levels and of varying geographical provenance. The wide stylistic range of the texts will make it particularly useful for the study of language change. It aims to make these texts accessible in a readily searchable format to researchers in Celtic studies and historical linguistics, and will allow scholars to search a substantial body of texts for particular linguistic features or other points of literary or historical interest to them. Many of the texts proposed for inclusion are not available in modern editions or are available only in modernised form, hence the project will also broaden access to the texts in question.
