History and Status of the Welsh Language Incomplete draft of 8th January 1995, last changed 24th September 1999. This document is written to accompany Mark Nodine's online Welsh lessons and used to be an appendix of that document, although I think it has now been removed from there (which makes the huge numbers of accesses to it the more confusing). It aims to answer, from the - perhaps necessarily opinionated - standpoint of a native Welsh speaker, some questions about the historical, political and cultural background of the language that he or I think might be asked by a learner from outside that culture. The present document has been drafted as responses to a list of questions, originally based on those that Mark thought might be asked: What is Welsh? Isn't Welsh just a dialect of English? V Wales The Welsh Language Welsh is one of the oldest languages that is still in use in the world today. It is far from a 'dead' language. It is spoken by over 750,000 people and this figure is rising steadily. The further west and north you go in Wales the more that you will find Welsh spoken. Welsh is a phonetic language (you say what you see) and, despite its apparent complexity, this makes it an easy language to read, (even if you don't necessarily understand everything that you're reading). It presents in alphabetical order the vocabulary of the Welsh language from the remnants of Old Welsh, through the abundant literature of the Medieval and Modern periods, to the explosion of vocabulary arising from the ever-increasing use of the language in all fields of twentieth-century life. This vocabulary is defined in Welsh, but English equivalents are also given. Detailed attention is given to variant forms, common collocations, and etymology. The work is based upon a collection of some two million citation slips, amassed by voluntary readers as well as members of the Dictionary staff and still being added to. A reading program was established in 1921 at the National Library of Wales with a small team of salaried staff and the Rev. J. Bodvan Anwyl as Secretary who organized a host of voluntary readers. The main emphasis of the course is in developing conversational skills in Welsh as it is currently spoken (as contrasted with teaching the forms needed for understanding literary Welsh). The material is an indirect descendent of the Cymraeg Byw movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This course does not assume a general proficiency in learning languages, nor any previous background in Welsh. The course is also developed in such a way that it can be distributed either through an ASCII medium wrapped as a setext, or made available in HTML on the World Wide Web Geraint Jones (Rhydychen) has written answers for common questions about Welsh and Wales This course is still under construction.
