History and Status of the Welsh Language
Incomplete draft of 8th January 1995, last changed 24th September 1999. This document is written to accompany Mark Nodine's online Welsh lessons and used to be an appendix of that document, although I think it has now been removed from there (which makes the huge numbers of accesses to it the more confusing). It aims to answer, from the - perhaps necessarily opinionated - standpoint of a native Welsh speaker, some questions about the historical, political and cultural background of the language that he or I think might be asked by a learner from outside that culture. The present document has been drafted as responses to a list of questions, originally based on those that Mark thought might be asked:

Welsh Folk Dances An Inquiry - 1935 The following text is from the Introduction and references from this book : Introduction Almost every country has its more or less typical National Dance, using the latter word in a collective sense. In some, the Folk Dance is, at present, in full flower; in others it is a dying plant. In certain countries, for example, England and Denmark, the nearly lost National Dance has been revived with a success so pronounced as to make one wonder why it was so neglected as to become almost forgotten. If Playford had not published his "English Dancing Master" in 1650 and if Cecil Sharp had not, almost accidentally, seen the last surviving Morris side of Headington, the greater part of the wonderful inheritance of English Folk Dances that we possess would have been lost forever. Dancing nowadays plays a greater part in the national life than it has done for some generations, and the revival of the English Folk Dances has been quickly followed by revived interest in the Scottish Dances both Highland and Lowland Country. Ireland has always kept her love for her distinctive reels and jigs, but where does Wales stand? It is nearly twenty years ago since I first asked this question in Wales, and the answer was invariably "Wales has no dances; if she had they have been lost and forgotten generations ago." My attention was drawn to the fact that the Welsh Language had no distinctive word for "dance" - the usual "dawnse" being borrowed from the English. (This, I afterwards found, has also occurred to the mind of Wm.Jones, the 18th-century antiquary.) But when one realises that most European countries use the same word (French "danse", German "tanz", Swedish "dans", Russian "tanets", &c.) this argument loses any significance.

The castle was built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, and strengthened by his grandson Llywelyn the Last before being captured in 1283 by the forces of King Edward I. Although greatly ruined, many claim this castle as their favorite, it's spectacular surrounding drawing both castle enthusiasts and those seeking to experience some of the most beautiful vistas Wales has to offer. 106. National Costume Of Wales
history and description of the traditional welsh costume.
http://www.wales-calling.com/culture/costume.htm
Welsh National costume
Welsh National costume evolved in Wales in the late 18th century as a development of costume worn in town and country. The popular image of Welsh "national" dress, of a woman in a red cloak and tall black hat, is one which has developed as a result of various influences which arose in the nineteenth century. Lady Llanover, the wife of an ironmaster in Gwent, was very influential in encouraging the wearing of "national dress", both in her own home and at eisteddfodau. She felt it was important to encourage the use of the Welsh language and the wearing of an identifiable Welsh costume. She succeeded in developing the Welsh "national dress" because people felt that their national identity was under threat and the wearing of a national costume was one way to declare that identity. The garments are made of Welsh flannel. The costume regarded as national dress is based on clothing worn by Welsh countrywomen during the early nineteenth century The tall "chimney" hat did not appear until the late 1840's and seems to be based on an amalgamation of men's top hats and a form of high hat worn during the 1790 - 1820 period in country areas.

Derby - Dead Centre of England
Derby is a compact city at the centre of England, full of history, art and - reputedly - ghosts. Along with the traditional appeals of a market town - established in 1154 - it boasts easy accessibility to the beautiful uplands of the Peak District National Park - second most visited National Park in the world after Japan's Mount Fuji. The surrounding countryside is also home to some of the most distinguished of English country houses.
