MOCH PRYDERI (Pryderi s Pigs). THE HISTORY As told in the Mabinogion, The Welsh national Epic. here once was a king named Math who had a severe Celtic disorder.

MOCH PRYDERI (Pryderi's Pigs) THE HISTORY
As told in the Mabinogion, The Welsh national Epic
here once was a king named Math who had a severe Celtic disorder. He could only live if his feet rested in the lap of a virgin, unless, of course, he was at war. Then he could roam anywhere at will. King Math had two nephews whose names were Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy. Gilvaethwy had wicked designs on the beautiful virgin Goewin, in whose lap Math rested his feet.
nable to get the beautiful Goewin alone so he could have his way with her, Gilvaethwy and his brother devised a plan to get Math to go to war. They had heard that a neighboring King, Pryderi had a very special herd of pigs (Moch) that belonged to him and to his people. Because their flesh was sweeter than that of Oxen, Pryderi had promised his people that the Moch(pigs) would make them rich, but that not one Mochyn (pig) would be touched until the herd had doubled in size.
wydyon and Gilvaethwy disguised themselves as bards and went to Pryderi's kingdom where, according to Welsh custom, they were invited to Pryderi's table to feast. They all recited poetry and ate and drank. After a flask or two too many Pryderi said that Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy's poetry was the best he ever heard and offered them a gift of whatever they wanted. Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy asked Pryderi if they could have his Moch. Pryderi of course said no, that the Moch belonged to his people and were to make them rich, but he said that after the herd had doubled in size, Pryderi would gladly give them some pigs. But Gwydyon and Gilvaethwy said they would give Pryderi something much more valuable then the pigs, and his people would be satisfied.

The History Portfolio The History Portfolio, the acclaimed and popular collection of black and white photocopiable drawings has now been expanded to cover national histories and the roots of European civilisation. Each pack contains maps, drawings, diagrams and cartoons giving a wealth of information on the period that can be used with a wide range of pupils. Packs come complete with teacher notes which give background information on the events and people depicted on each sheet. Welsh History Pack Wl - The Quest for National Identity The early history of Wales covered in the first four sheets is indistinguishable from the rest of prehistoric Britain. The coming of Christianity and the establishment of native dynasties lay the foundations of a national culture which, assailed by Vikings in the West and Saxons in the East, fused into a 'Welsh Identity' by the 10th century. The four attempts at unification (by Rhodri Mawr, Hywel Dda, Gruffudd ap Llywelyn and Llywelyn Iorwerth) and the Norman and Angevin counter measures, prepares the way for Edwardian conquest and assimilation in the 13th century. Period covered: ancient times to 1270. 20 resources.

presented by
Hughes Hall and the Department of AngloSaxon, Norse and Celtic
On 30 April, 2001, our Lecturer was Dr David Stephenson of Cambridge Seminars, speaking on 'The Aberconwy Chronicle'.  It was clear at this event that the Kathleen Hughes Memorial Lecture is now a popular part of the annual Hughes Hall lecture schedule. In 2002 the Hughes Memorial Lecture was given by Professor Rees Davies of All Souls' College and the University of Oxford.  As President, I am most grateful to our Hughes Memorial Lecture Advisory Committee consisting of Dr Franklin, Professor Dumville, and Professor Patrick SimsWilliams (University of Wales, Aberystwyth) for nominating distinguished scholars to be asked to be our Lecturers. Hughes Hall hopes that this new academic initiative will make a significant scholarly contribution to the study of Welsh history and that the series will continue for many years.  I am pleased to have been able to welcome it to the College's calendar.

UK Phonebook GUIDE BOOKS Pitkin Guides London TRAVEL SERVICES Airport Transfers Car Rental The Long Struggle for Identity: The Story of Wales and its People by Peter N. Williams, Ph.D. The history of Wales is primarily a story of struggle. It is a tribute to the people of Wales' determination to survive against overwhelming odds a struggle reflected not only in its castle-dominated landscape and its surviving Celtic language, but also in its long literary history. Created in a time when the flood of Germanic pagan invaders from the continent threatened to destroy Christian Celtic civilization in Britain, its history continued through the depredations of the Vikings, the invasions of the Normans, the oppression of the powerful Marcher Lords, and the ever-constant, ever threatening power of the English people and the English language. The early literature of Wales, documenting the beginnings of that struggle, was followed by a millennium and a half of writing that tells of the survivors the Welsh people themselves a people that Dylan Thomas, in the 20th century, praised as "not wholly bad or good." It tells the story of a people who have managed to retain much of their fullness of spirit despite a very early loss of most of their territory and political independence. It tells the story of a people who are still struggling to avert the loss of their ancient culture and language upon which much of that culture depends.

History The Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir was formed in the 1960s by a small number of Welshmen who had settled in Dublin. Over the years, many Irishmen (and even a few Scots, English and a Dutchman) have combined to form the present choir, which has retained a unique and authentically Welsh choral sound and repertoire - with Irish songs included for good measure. The Dublin Welsh Male Voice Choir at the National Concert Hall The choir has performed and competed in Ireland and abroad and has won prizes at choral competitions in Killarney, Arklow, Navan and Galway. It has performed at the Miners Eisteddfod in Porthcawl and in 1987 it was the first Irish choir chosen to participate in the Night of 1000 Male Voices at the Royal Albert Hall. More recently it participated in the World Choir events in Cardiff and Dublin - but the outstanding highlight for every member was the 1994 tour of Georgia USA, culminating in a spectacular concert in the Atlanta Dome.

Neolithic and Bronze Ages
'The Red Lady of Paviland' c.24000 BC The best-known site in Wales predating the Neolithic Age is Paviland Cave on the southern coast of the Gower peninsula. In 1826 a skeleton was discovered in the cave. It was assumed to be that of a female and, as the bones had been coloured with red ochre, the skeleton became known as that of the Red Lady of Paviland. Its discoverers believed that the burial had occurred during the Roman period. Modern tests have dated it to c.24000 BC, and it is thus a very early example of a ritual burial. As Paviland is in the southernmost part of Wales, it was probably not covered in ice in the following millennia. Thus, it is possible that those living around Paviland at the time of the burial - a people with an Upper Palaeolithic or Later Old Stone Age culture - are among the ancestors of the present population of Wales. The cave is now in a steep cliff above the sea; in the far colder climate of 24000 BC it would have overlooked the valley of the Severn where the vegetation would have resembled that of the present day tundra of northern Siberia.

95. Wales - A Celtic Nation Of Mountains And Coal
equally spilt on the subject, with the more rural welsh areas being for devolution, and the more industrial areas being against it. Main history page return
http://www.great-britain.co.uk/history/wales.htm
Wales - a Celtic land of mountains and coal
The Celts had fled westwards under sustained invasions from Romans, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. The Anglo Saxon English kings had not ruled Wales, and at the Norman invasion was a collection of small kingdoms. It took the Normans some 200 years to gain control of the whole of Wales. The 8 royal castles like Harlech (left) kept a lid on rebellion in the meantime. The last major Welsh uprising was by Owain Glyndwr between 1400 and 1408 Finally the Act of Union in 1536 "incorporated, united and annexed" Wales to England. Since then English law and government has rules in Wales. A solution that appears to have satisfied most Welsh people. Until the middle of the 18th century Wales remained a rural backwater. Population was sparse, and the topography meant that farming was not a viable proposition on any scale. Then the exploitation of coal and iron brought the Industrial revolution to Wales The need for labour in the south Wales coalfields brought an influx of English into this area which brought about an erosion of the Welsh language, though Welsh continued to be spoken extensively in North Wales. Today the mining of Welsh coal has all but disappeared, but the language continues to be spoken reasonably widely as a second language.

96. Hanes Dawnsio - Welsh Dance History
Brief section on the history and reviving of this form of dance.
http://www.welshfolkdance.org.uk/dawnsiau/hanes_dawnsio.htm
Cymdeithas Ddawns Werin Cymru
Welsh Folk Dance Society Hanes Dawnsiau Cymreig - Welsh Folk Dance History Bu hanes dawnsiau gwerin Cymru yn un eithaf trist. Gyda dyfodiad y sectau Anghydffurfiol yn y ddeunawfed ganrif a'r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, fe edrychodd y capeli ar y celfyddydau a diwylliant gwerinol Cymreig fel pethau pechadurus iawn. Fe wnaeth y capeli, y capelwyr, y diaconiaid a pregethwyr mawr y dydd fel Thomas Charles o'r Bala, eu gorau glas i gael gwared o bob math o ddifyrrwch gwerinol "pechadurus" fel dawnsio, canu gwerin, gwyliau Mabsant a cherddoriaeth werin yn gyffredinol, ac eithrio, wrth gwrs, canu emynau a cherddoriaeth y capel. Gorfodwyd pobl i gydymffurfio (!!) yn y gymdeithas Gymreig a Chymraeg ond roedd rhai yn ymladd yn erbyn y drefn ac yn dal i ddawnsio (ond ar ôl tynnu llenni'r ty!!). Heddiw, mae dros ugain o grwpiau dawnsio i oedolion a channoedd ar gannoedd o dimau yn yr ysgolion ac yn Adrannau ac Aelwydydd yr Urdd drwy Gymru. Mae Eisteddfod yr Urdd yn hybu'r dawnsio ac yn denu miloedd o bobl ifanc i gystadlu pob blwyddyn. Mae Gwyl Plant Gwent a Gwyl Plant Cymru yn llwyddiant mawr gyda dros fil o blant yn cymryd rhan, y rhan fwyaf o Dde Cymru. Mae Gwyl Ifan Caerdydd hefyd yn un o ddigwyddiadau mawr y flwyddyn gyda dros ddau gant o ddawnswyr hyn o bob cwr o Gymru yn cymryd rhan, a phawb mewn gwisg draddodiadol. The history of Welsh folk dancing is quite a sad one. With the advent of the Non-conformist sects in the 18th and 19th centuries, the chapels saw the Welsh folk arts and customs as ones that were very sinful and not in keeping with chapel teaching. The chapels, chapel-folk, deacons and preachers, some of them the greats of their day like Thomas Charles, Bala, did their utmost to stamp out all sorts of "sinful" folk entertainment such as dancing, folk singing, Mabsant festivals and folk music generally, except, of course, hymn singing and music in the chapels. People had to conform (!!) to peer pressure in the Welsh and Welsh-speaking society, although some did resist the pressure and continued to dance (but only after closing the curtains of the house first!!).
