GODODDIN
"Am drynni drylaw drylen"
Men called him an eagle, Gwyddien
Hair fell from his head
The land he fought for was fair
But ravaged: Merlin sang for him.
Women called after him, Bradwen
He faced death like a man
Who would hold a wolf-mane weaponless Bitten by that sad battle - an end of boldness. II BRAN "dyuot tri aderyn, a dechreu canu udunt ryw gerd" Seven years they feasted on birdsong At at the end of the seventh Took the head to Gwales. Sweet voices of Rhiannon In chants of forgetfulness For eighty years of the world's time. Heilyn opened the door To end the song; He had no choice But to choose sorrow. The raven croak Brought back the black Head to them. They took it to the White Hill The world moved on. III LLYWELYN "Nyt oes le y kyrcher rac carchar braw" To quench the fire of the dragon, Cut off his head But do not bury it For the grave is a refuge from fear, A place of resurrection His head is stuck with an iron pole The searing pain of it runs through my soul His people must weep to be broken.

The Celts settle in the British Isles. There were people here before they came of course! 43 A.D. Troops of Roman Emperor Claudius invade Britain. Irish incomers make permanent settlements in Southwest Wales. Four hundred years of Roman administration ends in Britain as the Romans leave. Saint Patrick, from Wales, brings Christianity to Ireland. after 450 Anglo-Saxon immigrants start arriving. Waves of Germanic tribes come to Britain. The Saxons are defeated at Mount Badon. One of King Arthur's twelve battles. The rule of King Arthur lasts for 45 plus years. This is also the period of the Saints. Celtic saints set up sites throughout Wales and Europe teaching Christianity. In the east of Britain, the Saxons remain pagan. Saint David dies on March 1st. Offa of Mercia, a powerful Saxon king, builds Offa's Dyke, marking Wales's eastern boundary. The Dyke is not a fortified one, but a permanent boundary line. The most notable Welsh figure before the arrival of the Normans is slain. Rhodri Mawr was the first Welsh ruler to unite the Welsh tribes and kingdoms under one rule.

The Mabinogion
Welsh Fairy Stories The Works of Marie Trevelyan Perhaps the most well-known piece of Welsh Literature is the Mabinogion, which only became known to the world outside of Wales during the mid 19th century, following the translation from Welsh into English by Lady Charlotte Guest. In view of the lack of English translations, it had been assumed that little or no Welsh literature and poetry existed prior to these translations, however nothing could be further from the truth. The stories in the Mabinogion are believed to have been first recorded in Welsh during the 11th century, some eight centuries before their translation, although the earliest remaining evidence is the White Book of Rhyderch written in the mid 14th century. Welsh poetry, in fact, dates back to the late 6th century, making it amongst the oldest in Europe. It utilised three line metre, monorhyming and other complex techniques that were often imitated by the Anglo-Saxon poets of the day. Celtic poets, such as Taliesin and Aneirin, set the patterns and standards that Welsh poetry adopted and maintained for the next 1400 years, and is still evident today in the regular eisteddfods held throughout the country. The purity of the Welsh vernacular makes it virtually unique throughout Europe, and even the world, enabling poetry and stories written over

History
London Welsh has one of the longest and proudest histories in Rugby Union. Although this website is getting on a bit too, it only covers a tiny part of that period. But here are the details we have. London Welsh found new stars and produced some great rugby but yet again finished fifth in an division which, more and more each season, is over at Christmas for most teams. London Welsh came through another season of encouraging wins and frustrating losses to finish 5th again. "Adrian Davies has in his first year experienced the highs and lows of coaching..yet he has comfortably kept the Club in the higher echelons of the 1st Division." John Dawes, President A season of consolidation enlivened by a good Cup run as London Welsh finished fifth in ADP2. London Welsh performed creditably in their first season in ADP2, finishing fourth and achieving our highest ever league placing. London Welsh achieved promotion from third place due to a league restructuring. A season to forget, both off and on the pitch, but the stats are here just in case you do want to be reminded. Don't look for too long, you'll only get depressed.
